GRADD hosts training to make senior centers 'veteran friendly'
HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – The Green River Area Development District (GRADD) says it recently hosted a training session to enhance support for veterans and their families.
Officials say organized by the Department for Aging and Independent Living (DAIL) and led by John L. Miles III, the Veteran Families and Caregiver Support Coordinator, this initiative certified attending senior centers as veteran friendly.

'We say all the time 'Thank you for your service.' This program puts 'Thank you for your service' into action,' says Miles. 'There are some veterans out here right now who need resources and services, but they're scared to open up. If we provide them with a veteran-friendly senior center, they might open up.'

Officials say representatives from senior centers in GRADD's region attended the training. The program is designed to equip senior centers to serve as ambassadors for veterans, helping them connect to benefits. It includes assistance with completing questionnaires and providing a point of contact who will follow up to ensure veterans are accessing all available services. Additionally, an outreach plan will be presented for the centers to implement, further enhancing their ability to support veterans.
'I found the training to be very informative,' says Webster County Senior Center Director Mandy L. Fambrough. 'Having access to this information will be invaluable in educating veterans about the resources available at our senior centers and, hopefully, encouraging them to utilize our services.'
