Fans react to Iowa baseball's lopsided Game 3 loss vs. Oregon
Fans react to Iowa baseball's lopsided Game 3 loss vs. Oregon Following Iowa baseball's (32-20-1, 21-9 Big Ten) disappointing 13-4 beatdown vs. No. 7 Oregon (41-13, 22-8 Big Ten) in Saturday's Game 3 from Duane Banks Field, which culminated in an outright Big Ten regular-season title for the Ducks, fans showcased their displeasure with the program's late-season skid on social media throughout the game. One fan even suggested that the baseball team be added to a list of athletic programs that the Iowa Athletic Department should monitor for resource use and efficiency. Another fan simply called the Game 3 loss, three-game sweep, and subsequent squandered Big Ten regular-season title as the "Rick Heller masterclass," referencing to the now second-consecutive regular-season collapse spearheaded the Hawkeyes head coach. As usual, Nebraska fans flooded the comments to mock the Hawkeyes' loss, although the Cornhuskers themselves had a thoroughly frustrating season that ended with a 28-27 overall record, 15-15 conference record, a series loss against Iowa, and the No. 8 seed in the Big Ten Tournament. Iowa State fans joined in on the action to taunt the Hawkeyes, even though the Cyclones have not had an NCAA-recognized program since 2001, when the team was terminated due to athletic budget cuts. Iowa actually leads the all-time series against the now-defunct Cyclones program by a 48-30 margin. One Oregon fan extended their hope in the Hawkeyes heading into the Big Ten Tournament by admitting that Oregon is a hot team and that the series' timing in the Big Ten calendar favored the Ducks. Iowa's next game will be Wednesday, May 21, when the Hawkeyes begin their Big Ten Tourmament quest vs. No. 10-seed Rutgers at 6 p.m. CT from Charles Schwab Field. The entire tournament will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network. All of Iowa's games can also be heard through the Hawkeyes Radio Network alongside play-by-play voice John Leo and color analyst John Evans. Big Ten Network announces Iowa baseball vs. Oregon broadcast plan
Big Ten Network announces Iowa baseball vs. Oregon broadcast plan As the chase for the Big Ten baseball regular season crown becomes clearer with two weeks remaining, the Big Ten Network has announced its broadcast plans for next week's series between the first-place Iowa Hawkeyes (32-15, 21-6) and the No. 7-ranked Oregon Ducks (35-13, 18-8). While Iowa has a non-conference three-game series vs. No. 11-ranked Oregon State (34-12) this weekend from Principal Park in Des Moines, Iowa, the Hawkeyes will enter the final homestand of the regular season vs. the Ducks with at least a one game lead atop the conference standings (currently lead the Big Ten with a 2 1/2 advantage). According to the Big Ten Network, it plans to broadcast the final two games of the series from Duane Banks Field on Friday, May 16, and Saturday, May 17. Game 2 is scheduled to start at 6:02 p.m. CT, while Game 3 is set to begin at 12:02 p.m. CT. As for Thursday's series opener, that will air on FS1 with a start time set for 6:02 p.m. CT. All three games will also be available via radio on the Hawkeyes Radio Network alongside play-by-play voice John Leo and color analyst John Evans. Watch Iowa baseball vs. Oregon Due to the somewhat complex nature of all of the Hawkeyes' clinching scenarios, the easiest path to a regular-season title is by winning at least two of three against Oregon. If the Hawkeyes were to win their first regular-season title since 1990, Iowa would have a more straightforward path to the Big Ten Tournament title as the top seed out of the 12 qualifying programs. The winner of the Big Ten Tournament, which takes place at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Neb., from May 20-25, receives the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. Where does Iowa baseball rank in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll?
Where does Iowa baseball rank in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll? As the Big Ten regular season nears its conclusion, Iowa baseball (32-15, 21-6 Big Ten) continues to receive votes in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll for the seventh consecutive week, with the program looking to clinch its first conference regular season title since 1990. While Iowa's momentum has slowed a bit lately after losing yet another pesky midweek non-conference game at home against Illinois State and dropping its first conference series of the season to Washington in Seattle, Wash., they still maintain a 2 1/2 game lead atop the conference standings. However, the Hawkeyes' 1-3 record in the past week has lowered their number of votes in the latest Coaches Poll. Iowa now receives just 19 votes, unlike the 21 they earned a week prior. Regarding the rest of the Big Ten, Oregon leads the pack this week at the No. 7 position. The Ducks moved up three spots after finishing the week with a 3-1 record. Following the Ducks is UCLA, which earns the No. 17 slot in this week's poll. The Bruins fell three slots from the previous poll as they dropped two of three games against crosstown rival USC over the weekend to finish the week with a 1-3 record. Joining Iowa among the programs also receiving votes is USC, which earned 25 votes this week. The Trojans leapfrog the Hawkeyes by finishing the week with a 3-1 record, highlighted by the previously mentioned series victory over UCLA. This places USC higher than Iowa in the pool of 13 other programs that are also getting recognition. Iowa will have a prime opportunity to potentially jump into next week's Top 25 as the Hawkeyes open a three-game weekend series vs. No. 11 Oregon State from Principal Park in Des Moines, Iowa, on Friday. Game 1 of the series against the Beavers is scheduled to begin at 6:35 p.m. CT. The entire series will stream on Big Ten Plus (subscription required) and be available on the Hawkeyes Radio Network alongside play-by-play voice John Leo and color analyst John Evans.
