BEVs are more efficient than FCEVs: report

Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are gaining popularity, with sales exceeding 10 million in 2024. However, the report by IDTechEx reveals that battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are more efficient than FCEVs, with triple the energy supplied to a BEV reaching the wheels compared to an FCEV. Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are a zero-emission solution, where hydrogen fuel is combined with air in a fuel cell stack to produce electrical power. The only on-road emission is water vapor, according to John Li, Technology Analyst at IDTechEx. However, the increasing demand for charging power is a challenge, as charging stations need to be built to handle the peak demands of constant high-power charging. Most areas do not have the necessary grid connections and infrastructure to support high-power levels of charging, which can cost upwards of $100,000. To tackle this, stationary energy storage solutions are being developed. The scalability of hydrogen refueling is another concern, as hydrogen is stored onsite, meaning that peak power demand is significantly reduced when compared to DC fast charging stations. Hydrogen pipelines will be built to create a network of infrastructure capable of consistently supplying hydrogen, but hydrogen refueling stations usually take multiple years to go from planning stages to finished construction. Additionally, hydrogen refueling stations are very CAPEX-intensive, requiring equipment for hydrogen generation, transport, compression, and storage. In conclusion, the future availability of green hydrogen remains a concern, as without access to large quantities of cost-effective, low-carbon hydrogen, FCEVs may not be taken up in significant numbers.

Wendy's hosts Girl Scout cookie sales, debuts Thin Mints Frosty

Wendy's is serving up a new Thin Mints Frosty and more than 4,200 restaurants are ready to host Girl Scout cookie booths. The big picture: Girl Scout cookie sales will launch this weekend at participating restaurants in the fast-food chain. Wendy's confirmed to Axios that as of Thursday more than 1,500 restaurants had already booked 8,300 boothing appointments. The new Frosty flavor inspired by the most popular Girl Scout cookie flavor debuts Friday nationwide during National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend, when the cookies are also widely available. National Girl Scout Weekend kicks off online cookie sales Girl Scouts of the USA announced its National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend is Feb. 21-23. National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend marks when "every zip code can order their favorite Girl Scout Cookies for direct delivery to their front door using the nationwide Girl Scout Cookie Finder," the organization says. The Girl Scout Cookie Finder also shows where cookies are available for purchase at local booths. Walmart, Wendy's and more to have Girl Scout cookie booths The Girl Scouts notes that Walmart, Sam's Club and Wendy's are "national cookie boothing partners." Participating Walmart and Sam's Club locations will host booths at select locations through April with start dates varying by location. Participating Wendy's locations kick off cookie sales on Saturday, per the Girl Scouts. Between the lines: Find participating stores as well as hours on the Girl Scout Cookie Finder. Wendy's Thin Mints Frosty Zoom in: The Thin Mints Frosty is available in two flavors for a limited time. John Li, Wendy's vice president of research and development, said a fudge-like cookie butter developed together with the Girl Scouts can be swirled into either the classic chocolate or vanilla Frosty. "You can't get more nostalgic than a Wendy's Frosty and the Girls Scouts," Li said, noting many in Wendy's senior leadership were Girl Scouts as kids. Kelly's taste test: Axios got an early taste of the two new Frosty flavors and both flavors tasted like the classic cookie. But warning, it was hard to pick a favorite. Li thinks consumers should try both and suggests dipping Girl Scout cookies in. Girl Scout cookie prices 2025 State of play: Girl Scout cookie season officially kicked off in early January and runs through April, but timing varies based on location. This cookie season is the last for two flavors — S'mores and Toast-Yay — which will be retired after this season. Cookie prices vary by region but many boxes cost $6 each. Editor's note: This story was updated with an additional photo and more information on cookie sales at Wendy's.
