White New York Town Official Allegedly Shoots Black DoorDash Driver For Reasons That'll Boil Your Blood
A disturbing video shows the moment a DoorDash delivery driver approached the door of who he thought was the hungry customer he was looking for until he realized too late that it wasn't. What happened should strike fear in the hearts of all gig service employees. The 24-year-old DoorDasher who just moved to the U.S. from Guinea-Bissau got lost on a rural road in Chester, Orange County, ABC7 reports. His battery was also dying as he tried to make his delivery, so he asked for help before completing his stop to make sure the food got to the right place. The report says a neighbor directed him to the home of John Reilly, a New York town official, and their interaction was intense to say the very least. Doorbell camera footage caught the whole scene. The DoorDasher walked up the door and knocked. When Reilly answered the door, the delivery driver asked if he was holding his order. 'No. Get off my property,' the official allegedly barked back, per the report. However, as the DoorDasher turned his back to return to his vehicle, the report says Reilly began shooting at him. 'Go!' the town official shouted before firing additional shots as the man drove away. The delivery driver was struck in the back as he tried to make it to his vehicle, per New York State Police. On his way out the neighborhood, he stopped by another home begging for help. Relatives told ABC7 he stopped at a gas station before driving home to Middletown which was miles away. They said he collapsed before being rushed to the hospital. Luckily, he lived. The incident was so bizarre, the police even agreed that he didn't pose a threat. 'There's nothing to indicate the victim had any nefarious intentions; he's just out there doing his job, trying to make a food delivery,' said New York State Police Capt. Joseph Kolek via The New York Post. Reilly has given no suggestion that he would step down from his role as highway superintendent. The Town Board also said they have no say in what they can do with him moving forward. However, he still got slammed with charges of first-degree assault, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a firearm. He was booked into Orange County Jail on a $500,000 bond. For the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Harrowing video shows man open fire on driver who stopped to ask for directions
Shocking doorbell footage shows the moment a New York town official shot and wounded a DoorDash delivery driver who had stopped to ask for directions. John J. Reilly III, 48, an elected highway superintendent in Chester and a federally licensed firearms dealer, is under investigation for shooting the unidentified 24-year-old driver in the back when he stopped outside his home on May 2 after his phone died, according to New York State Police. Disturbing video first obtained by News12 shows Reilly walk out his front door and fire multiple shots at the delivery driver's car in the street after he'd approached multiple homes in the wooded neighbourhood looking for directions. You can watch the footage in the video player above 'Go!' Reilly yells in the clip after firing a warning shot, before proceeding to continue firing at the vehicle as it peeled away. The worker was hit once in the back as he attempted to flee in his car, according to New York State Police. 'I need help,' the West Africa native begged in another neighbour's doorbell camera moments earlier, according to WABC. He later drove himself home, where he collapsed before he was rushed to the hospital. Police said the driver wasn't doing anything suspicious and was 'just out there doing his job.' 'There's nothing to indicate the victim had any nefarious intentions; he's just out there doing his job, trying to make a food delivery,' New York State Police Capt. Joseph Kolek told reporters. The driver's family recalled the harrowing encounter he had with the official. 'He asked the guy, 'Is this your order?' The guy said, 'No,' and proceeds to say, 'Get off my property.' He walks away, he's going about his day, going to his car, and the guy tries to murder him,' a relative of the driver told the outlet. 'He just started shooting at him and he thought his life was over.' Reilly, a federally licensed firearm dealer, was charged with first-degree assault, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a firearm. He was booked into Orange County Jail on a $500,000 bond. Reilly has given no indication that he will step down. 'As an elected official, the Town Board does not have control over Mr. Reilly's future as highway superintendent,' Town of Chester Supervisor Brandon Holdridge said in a statement after the shooting. New York State Police is handling the investigation after the Chester Police Department recused itself from the case.

New York town official facing charges after shooting lost DoorDash driver, police say
A New York town official is facing a slew of charges after allegedly shooting a DoorDash delivery driver who was lost and looking for directions in the town of Chester last week, police said. The DoorDash driver suffered serious, nonfatal injuries, New York State Police said in a statement released Sunday. As of Tuesday, the victim remained hospitalized after undergoing surgery, CNN affiliate WABC reported. According to police, the driver had attempted to deliver food to a residence in the Valerie Drive neighborhood in Chester last Friday. Chester is roughly 50 miles north of Manhattan. The driver, who police didn't identify, struggled to find the exact location and approached several homes asking for directions before arriving at the residence of John Reilly III, the town's highway superintendent, police said. Reilly then told the driver to get off his property before firing multiple rounds at the victim as he attempted to leave in his vehicle, according to police. The driver was shot once in the back, police said, 'causing serious physical injuries.' The driver was provided with the 'correct consumer address' in the Dasher app, but he went to the wrong house, DoorDash told CNN in a statement. The delivery was due for roughly 10 p.m. Friday and in 'a rural location,' the company said. 'No one should ever fear for their safety just for trying to make deliveries in their neighborhood,' DoorDash said in the statement. 'We're devastated by this senseless act of violence, and we're praying for a full and speedy recovery. We'll continue to work closely with law enforcement as they investigate this tragic incident.' A relative of the victim told WABC the driver 'thought his life was over.' He was so scared that he first stopped at a gas station after the incident, before driving dozens of miles away to his home in Middletown, the relative said. 'Yes, the situation makes us angry, but we're just very grateful that he's alive, and we want this guy to get the punishment he deserves because he tried to kill him,' the relative told WABC. Reilly, a federally licensed firearms dealer, has been charged with assault in the first degree, the criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, and the criminal possession of a firearm, according to police. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 9 in the Town of Chester Court. CNN has reached out to New York State police and Chester police for further details. New York official charged in shooting of DoorDash delivery driver who was lost
Authorities have arrested a New York official for shooting a lost DoorDash delivery driver over the weekend. On Sunday, New York state police announced the arrest of 48-year old John J Reilly of Chester, New York, after he allegedly shot a driver who got lost while attempting to deliver food to a residence in the Valerie Drive neighborhood on Friday evening. Authorities said the driver approached several homes asking for directions before arriving at Reilly's residence. Reilly, who is currently Chester's highway superintendent and a federally licensed firearms dealer, then told the driver to get off his property. As the driver attempted to leave in his vehicle, Reilly fired multiple shots at the driver, striking him once in the back and causing serious injuries, police said. Reilly has since been charged with assault in the first degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, as well as a criminal possession of a firearm. The driver required emergency surgery, per a New York Times report. An Orange county district attorney's office spokesperson told the paper that the driver's injuries are 'serious but not at this time expected to be fatal'. The driver has not been publicly identified by authorities, but family members told ABC7NY that the driver is 24-years old and from west Africa. He moved to the nearby town of Middletown last month and does not speak English. They added that he was unfamiliar with the area and that his phone had died. Following the incident, the driver drove home 'because he thought he did something wrong', the outlet added. 'There's nothing to indicate the victim had any nefarious intentions, he's just out there doing his job, trying to make a food delivery,' New York state police captain Joseph Kolek told reporters. In a statement to the Guardian, DoorDash said: 'No one should ever fear for their safety just for trying to make deliveries in their neighborhood. We're devastated by this senseless act of violence, and we're wishing the Dasher a full and speedy recovery. We'll continue to work closely with law enforcement as they investigate this tragic incident.' In 2023, a 20-year old woman, Kaylin Gillis, was shot dead in upstate New York after the car she was riding in mistakenly went to the wrong property. A jury found 66-year old Kevin Monahan, the property's owner, guilty of second-degree murder last year. Gillis's death occurred just days after a white homeowner in Kansas City, Missouri shot 16-year old Ralph Yarl, a Black honor student who rang 84-year old Andrew Lester's doorbell by mistake. Yarl survived the shooting and Lester was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action.
