First Drive: 2025 Cadillac Escalade IQ EV SUV Boasts Incredible Range
Someone call the Department of Energy, because the Escalade IQ has finally figured out our long-term electric driving strategy. It's quite the phenomenon when one of the most venerated luxury SUVs in modern culture switches its persona from fossil fuels to electric current. Thus, there is no need to worry about a power outage when you take the wheel of Cadillac's 2025 Escalade IQ since it has surpassed the Rivian R1S (410 miles) for the longest driving range of any EV SUV with a Cadillac-estimated 460-mile range. Remarkably, Cadillac is enhancing its mobility narrative with seven EVs representing the luxury portfolio, which includes the high-IQ Optiq, Lyriq, Lyriq-V, Vistiq, Escalade IQ, Escalade IQL (5-inch difference in length), and Celestiq. With IQ, the new moniker denotes Cadillac's strategic pivot to name-based products for its EV range. Going from alphanumeric badges like CT5 or XT6 to labels works in concert with people, nature, and machines. For example, Optiq is inspired by the optical relationship between light, color, and form. Yet, the luxury division of General Motors is not renouncing gasoline powertrains altogether; leadership is just preparing for the future as climate change, global warming, and renewable energy remain top subjects of discussion on the global in four unique trims—Luxury 1, Sport 1, Luxury 2, and Sport 2—the Escalade IQ delivers (as stated) up to 460 electric miles and can restore 100 miles of range in 10 minutes at a public DC fast charging station. A 205 kWh 24-module GM battery (same as the HUMMER EV) is the foundation of the roughly 9,000-pound Escalade IQ and the forthcoming IQL. Rolling on 24-inch aerodynamic rims and massive Michelin Primacy LTX 275/50 R24 all-season tires, the majestic SUV moves from 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds when driver-selectable Velocity Max is initiated. This mode also produces a thunderous 750 horsepower and 785 lb.-ft. of torque from the two-motor, 800-volt powertrain. Owners will also be able to tow up to 8,000 pounds. 'Escalade IQ raises the standard just as the original Escalade redefined luxury a quarter-century ago,' said John Roth, vice president, Global Cadillac. 'This reimagining of an icon marks the next step in Cadillac's all-electric future. For more than 120 years, Cadillac's bold innovative spirit has defined American luxury. The Escalade IQ embodies this spirit in the most sophisticated form.' During test driving in San Francisco and its outer urban and rural areas I was able to evaluate and establish an intrinsic rapport with the opulent, quiet, and rapid-accelerating large EV SUV. In the city, it was far more maneuverable than I expected with 4-Wheel Steer (rear wheels turn 7.2 degrees) and Cadillac Arrival Mode, allowing me to glide diagonally into my curbside parking spot. This mode is similar to the GMC HUMMER EV's CrabWalk. Low Ride Mode is also available when the desire to drop the Air Ride Adaptive suspension comes into play for an aggressive demeanor while stagnant or cruising at slower speeds. Paired with Magnetic Ride Control 4.0 and an eAWD system, the distinguished Escalade IQ was agile and resolute on the snake-like roads outside the city. Not once did I feel undismayed during a few bouts of performance Escalade IQ is the first full-size Cadillac SUV built on GM's tech-savvy and modular EV propulsion architecture, dubbed the Ultium Platform. The battery pack generates over 200 kWh of accessible energy for various owner needs and restores energy efficiently from the high-voltage architecture. Additionally, Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) bidirectional charging technology allows you to charge parts of your home as needed with GM Energy's Ultium Home line of products. But keep in mind the equipment and installation service will cost you thousands upon thousands of dollars. Depending on the age of your residence, you may have to upgrade your panel box to at least 200 amps, which is another few thousand dollars. When driving, regeneration and decelerating without using the brake manifests from One-Pedal Driving and Variable Regen on Demand using a paddle shifter on the left of the steering wheel. Style-wise, the IQ presents a commanding design with an extended, sophisticated profile. Designers gained about 80 electric miles just from the aerodynamic silhouette and requisite technologies. For example, the tires and wheels were developed for minimal drag which helps with range. A fixed panoramic glass roof (needs a sunroof shade), power opening and closing doors with three egress settings, a 12.2 cubic-foot eTrunk compartment under the hood, an illuminating shield grill, and tall vertical lights highlight the exterior essentials of the IQ. However, I am not a fan of the video camera turn signals within the side mirrors as the imagery is distracting. Those mirrors would also be expensive to replace whether an insurance claim or out-of-pocket. Enter the lavish, tech-forward cockpit to discover a sanctuary commingling wellness amenities, driving innovations, and entertainment features. The Escalade IQ haven begins with the curved pillar-to-pillar 55-inch display segmented into three screens that connect the infotainment, music, Apps, navigation, odometer, head-up display, and an array of other features. Google built-in replaces Android Auto and Apple CarPlay so there will be a learning curve. With seating for up to seven passengers the Executive Second Row package ups your comforts with stowable tray tables, 12.6-inch personal screens, headrest speakers, dual wireless charging pads, massaging, heating, and ventilated seats, and a rear command center. Seat controls have been moved to the doors so now the seats are 2-inches wider and a little cooler within the middle console will keep your alkaline waters and green smoothies chill. Just as important, the available 42-speaker AKG Studio Reference audio system will turn your favorite Bob Marley classics—"No Woman, No Cry"—into an immersive listening experience. Expect a starting MSRP of $129,990 (including destination and delivery) for the global SUV. But you can easily spend up to $160,000 for the opulent and innovative Escalade IQ. Cadillac has sold more than 1 million Escalades globally over the past 25 years, so expect the IQ to accelerate that number with its electric energy. Engine: 800 volts, two-motors Transmission: 1-speed automatic Horsepower/Torque: 750 hp/785 lb-ft 0-60: 4.7 seconds Range: 460 miles Price: From $129,990

2026 Cadillac Escalade IQL priced at $132,000 to start
2026 Cadillac Escalade IQL priced at $132,000 to start Show Caption Hide Caption EV version of Cadillac Escalade gets a name Called the Escalade IQ, it is one of three new EVs Cadillac plans to unveil this year. Cadillac, Detroit Free Press The Escalade IQL will have an estimated range of 460 miles and be able to gain 116 miles of range in 10 minutes with fast charging. Production is expected to begin in mid-2025 at GM's Factory Zero plant in Detroit. Cadillac has released pricing information for the 2026 Cadillac Escalade IQL, the long-wheelbase version of the brand's cornerstone vehicle. The variant comes nearly two years after Cadillac revealed its first all-electric full-size SUV. Starting at $132,695, the price includes destination freight charge but not tax, title and dealer fees. If buyers initiate the velocity max feature, the vehicle can reach 750 horsepower and 785 pound-feet of torque, Cadillac said. The vehicle could also reach 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. The SUV promises more cargo space, executives said in a news release, as well as Cadillac-estimated range of 460 miles on a full charge. Cadillac also anticipates faster charging turnaround, with customers plugging in to fast charging stations pulling in 116 miles of range in 10 minutes. Cadillac plans to sell the 2026 Cadillac Escalade IQL in all its 10 markets, including China and Canada, with production slated for mid-2025 at General Motors' Factory Zero plant in Detroit. Affluence made affordable: The cheapest luxury SUVs of 2025 Ambitious plans for Cadillac brand Cadillac is inching closer to its goal of having an all-electric vehicle lineup by 2030, an ambitious goal even without criticism of EVs from President Donald Trump. John Roth, 56, vice president of Global Cadillac, told the Free Press that the brand's vision plan, first drafted in 2015, has come to fruition this year. 'As you scanned the luxury landscape at that time, you saw brands moving up and becoming truly tier one, and others struggling in the marketplace that I call 'plus plus' — with a sister division that just takes a model and puts luxury elements on it,' Roth said. 'Are you truly engineering a portfolio and a platform from the ground up and making it a luxury vehicle? That's where Cadillac wanted to go.' Cadillac's all-electric options come as the company has finally exceeded pre-pandemic sales volume. Cadillac sales of 160,204 last year marked a 2.5% increase from 156,246 in 2019, according to the Automotive News Data Center. Still, it remains lower than the brand's peak of 235,002 Cadillacs sold in 2005, the highest annual figure in a data set going back to 2004. So far, GM's luxury EV sales show how viable the new powertrain is for customers — once production hurdles were solved. The Lyriq launched in 2022 and the U.S. Cadillac dealers sold only 122 vehicles thanks to assembly line issues. Sales rose exponentially in 2023, with 9,154, and 28,402 in all of 2024. Electrification 'inevitable' If you apply the thought process first planned in 2015, General Motors would have arrived at an EV strategy even without pressure from federal and safety agencies promoting sustainable vehicle production, Roth said, because of what a battery wrapped around platform enables auto designers to do. 'You end up with cars and SUVs like we have today because you're no longer constrained by the traditional gas elements that make up a vehicle,' he added. 'Blistering fast relative to an ICE counterpart, but one with driving dynamics built into it.' Escalade sales, in particular, rebounded quickly from the pandemic, with 41,671 total sold last year. The new Escalade, 'is literally its own platform, design, wiring architecture and exterior vehicle design,' he said. 'If you set the two of them next to each other, they still have Escalade characteristics, but the IQ is a completely different vehicle than its sister.' The next vehicles Cadillac launches will be the Optiq compact SUV and a three-row Vistiq SUV. There's no telling what the rest of this year holds, particularly with the first cannon blasts of a trade war firing this week. Still, as ever, there's optimism in the auto industry, and Roth is among those looking forward to the next five years. 'Every big milestone of innovation meant volume growth and brand growth for General Motors,' he said. Jackie Charniga covers General Motors for the Free Press. Family thankful after winds topple power line leading to Overland Park house fire
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — A Kansas City metro family is grateful for smoke alarms and good neighbors. Fire crews were called to a home in the area of W. 89th Street and Craig Drive Tuesday around midnight for the . The Overland Park Fire Department says it ran about 40 calls between midnight and 8 a.m. Wednesday. Over a dozen related to power lines. Four were fire calls; one was a significant structure fire with heavy smoke coming from an Overland Park resident's garage. 'She's 95 years old, tough as nails, getting out in 28-degree weather with no shoes, just in her pajamas,' the homeowner's son Chris Roth said. 'It was 12:30 and my wife and I were asleep. We got a call from the neighbor here that said my mom was luckily safe inside his house, but the house was on fire. We got in the car and hauled here through the blizzard and checked on her and took her to Shawnee Mission Hospital to make sure all of her breathing was good from the smoke inhalation.' Two men charged in connection to deaths of 3 Chiefs fans in Northland backyard Although the resident of the home, suffered from minor smoke inhalation, Chris and John Roth are thankful their mom made it out alive. 'Smoke did a number. Water did a number on everything. Really looking for pictures, paperwork, anything personal,' John Roth shared with FOX4 Wednesday, as family went back to the brothers credit smoke alarms for their mom still being here. 'The house is an old house, never had smoke alarms. She never had them. Didn't want them. Our sister, luckily, talked her into those because they went off and saved her,' John Roth said. 'She would have slept through the whole thing. She would not be here today, had it not been for the smoke alarms.' Fire crews responded just after midnight during the storm. Investigators believe a tree limb knocked a service line down in the back yard of the home. 'Which is the power line that comes from the pole to the house, hit that, pulled the meter away from the house, started a fire in the back of the house, the backside of the garage,' Media Manager for the Overland Park Fire Department, Jason Rhodes, shared with FOX4. 'It was pretty significant in the garage.' OPFD said fires burn hotter and faster now, than ever before, so early notification, like from a smoke alarm, is vital. 'The winds last night were really, really, high and lot of tree limbs down, lot of power lines down, very unfortunate that that happened, but very fortunate that she had those working smoke alarms and was able to get out safely,' Rhodes shared. 'Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, those things are really going to give you your best chance of survival. You need that early notification, so that you can get out before it's too late. Fire can double in moments.' Download the FOX4 News app on iPhone and Android Firefighters from both Overland Park and Lenexa fire departments assisted in extinguishing this fire. 'Firefighters began an offensive fire attack, knocking down fire in the garage, while additional crews searched the house to be sure everyone was out. It took crews about 40 minutes to bring the fire under control,' a release from OPFD said. 'Fire significantly damaged the garage, but the entire home suffered moderate smoke damage. While it appears the fire may have started from a downed powerline in the rear of the home, the exact cause is under investigation.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
