Here's when summer starts in 2025. What to know.

Is it summer yet? Not quite, but it's getting closer. The first official day of summertime is nearly upon us. Here's what you need to know about when summer starts and what it means for Indiana. June 20 marks the first official day of summer in 2025. That's on a Friday this year. It's also the date of the summer solstice. The first day of summer changes annually, arriving on June 20, 21 or 22. That's because the earth's astronomical year is actually 365.25 days long, writes June 20 is going to be a long day — the longest, actually. Indiana will get roughly 15 hours of sunshine on June 20, 2025. The sun will rise at about 6:17 a.m. in Lafayette and set around 9:21 p.m., according to From here on out, the days will only get shorter until the winter solstice in December. The summer solstice, according to the National Weather Service, is when the earth's tilt toward the sun reaches its maximum noontime elevation. For everywhere north of the Tropic of Cancer, the sun is at its highest point in the sky, resulting in the longest day of the year. Solstice is a combination of the Latin words sol, meaning "sun," and sistere, meaning "to stop," according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. It's derived from the Latin word solstitium. Or to put it in another way: solstice means "sun stands still." In the northern hemisphere, summer begins near the end of June and lasts through July, August and most of September. On Sept. 22, the autumnal equinox marks the start of fall. There are two solstices and two equinoxes every year, signaling the start of each new season. The summer solstice happens when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky and marks the longest day of the year. The winter solstice is when the sun hits its lowest point, resulting in the shortest day of the year. Equinox, if you were wondering, means "equal night" in Latin, when nighttime and daytime are of equal lengths everywhere on the planet. Just like the solstice, there are two equinoxes — the vernal (first day of spring) and the autumnal (first day of fall). March 20, 2025: first day of spring. June 20, 2025: first day of summer. Sept. 22, 2025: first day of fall. Dec. 21, 2025: first day of winter. John Tufts covers trending news for IndyStar and Midwest Connect. Will the northern lights be visible in Kentucky tonight? What we know about Monday's chances

The northern lights put on a dazzling show late Sunday into early Monday morning across several U.S. states. If you didn't see them, not to worry — you've got another shot at spotting auroras Monday night. You might have to do some traveling, though, depending on how far south you live from the U.S.-Canadian border. More geomagnetic storms are predicted to hit the Earth soon, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, but their level of activity won't be as strong. While space weather is notoriously hard to predict, here's what we know about Kentucky's chances of seeing the northern lights. In short, the odds aren't great. Experts at NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center say the Kp index — a measure of Earth's geomagnetic activity — will be lower Monday night than on Sunday, meaning the auroras will be further north. Weather permitting, the northern lights could be visible low on the horizon in cities that include Seattle, Des Moines, Chicago, Cleveland and Boston, according to the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, Geophysical Institute website, which tracks the phenomenon. If you can't spot the northern lights in Kentucky this week, the Blue Grass state still has a great spot for stargazing. Mammoth Cave National Park, roughly 90 miles south of Louisville, is an International Dark Sky location and therefore an excellent place to view the constellations and meteor showers this summer. People living in Alaska, Wyoming, Pennsylvania and Minnesota shared images of Sunday's auroras across social media. Here's a little bit of what they saw. Experts say the best auroras are usually within an hour or two of midnight (between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time). These hours expand towards evening and morning as the level of geomagnetic activity increases. There may be aurora in the evening and morning, but it is usually not as active and therefore, not as visually appealing, according to NOAA. When is the May full moon? A special Flower Moon will shine bright near Mother's Day

A special full moon will rise soon over Mississippi. The May full moon is known as the Flower Moon, among other names, because spring is when plants start blooming and animals shake off the dregs of winter. It's a time to prepare for the coming summer. This month, the full moon is special because it's a micromoon. Here's what that means and when you're likely to see the moon shine the brightest over the Magnolia State. The Flower Moon will be its brightest at 11:56 P.M. CT Monday, May 12, according to Old Farmer's Almanac. It will also be bright on Mother's Day, May 11, and Tuesday, May 13. In Jackson, the full moon will rise at 8:12 p.m. May 12 and set at 5:43 a.m. May 13. Click here to see moonrise and moonset times in your area. According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, the name Flower Moon comes from Algonquin. It's a season when buds are blooming across a lot of North American. The Cree also called it the Budding Moon and Leaf Budding Moon. The trive also called it the Frog Moon or Egg Laying Moon. The Oglala called it Moon of Shedding Ponies, and the Dakota and Lakota reportedly called it the Planting Moon. A micromoon is the opposite of a supermoon. It looks 5.9% to 6.9% smaller than an average full moon. It also appears 12.5% to 14.1% smaller than a supermoon, which happens when the full moon is at its closest point to Earth. The moon's phases in May are: 🌓 First Quarter: May 4. 🌕 Full Moon: May 12. 🌗 Last Quarter: May 20. 🌑 New Moon: May 27. Here's a list of the full moon names, courtesy of the Old Farmer's Almanac: January: Wolf Moon. February: Snow Moon March: Worm Moon. April: Pink Moon. May: Flower Moon. June: Strawberry Moon. July: Buck Moon. August: Sturgeon Moon. September: Corn Moon (was Harvest Moon in 2024). October: Hunter Moon. November: Beaver Moon. December: Cold Moon. More: Summer will start in Mississippi soon.
