Salem man dies in crash on I-293 in Manchester

Mar. 20—A Salem man died in a multiple-vehicle accident on Interstate 293 north in Manchester on Thursday, snarling traffic during the morning commute. John Vangelder, 72, was thrown from his pickup truck and sustained fatal injuries from the crash, reported around 8:20 a.m., according to State Police. The crash happened between the Brown Avenue and South Willow Street exits. A preliminary investigation showed that the two vehicles involved in the crash were a red Ford F-150 pickup truck and a black Cadillac SRX, police said. The driver of the Cadillac SRX was identified as James Drago, 48, of Amherst. Drago was not injured and remained on scene to cooperate with the investigation. Multiple northbound lanes had to be closed with the last of the lanes reopening at 11:15 a.m. Police said what led up to the crash was under investigation. Around 8:20 A.M. on Thursday, New Hampshire State Troopers were alerted of a serious crash on I-293 Northbound at mile marker 24. Upon arrival, officers found two vehicles, a red Ford F-150 and a Black Cadillac SRX, involved in the crash. Initial investigation revealed that the driver of the F-150, 72-year-old John Vangelder of Salem, New Hampshire, had been thrown out of his vehicle, suffering fatal injuries.
