‘We've got a pretty good story': John Wick director Chad Stahelski teases Chapter 5

Chad Stahelski has a "pretty good story" for John Wick: Chapter 5. After the titular hitman's apparent death in 2023's John Wick: Chapter 4, Lionsgate has greenlit a fifth outing for Keanu Reeves' assassin, and Stahelski, 56, has teased the script he and scribe Mike Finch wrote is coming along nicely - though will only go ahead with the movie if they "crack" the story. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about continuing John Wick's story after his supposed end in Chapter 4, the filmmaker said: "I'm not going to lie to you, it's a bit of a conundrum. Me and Mike Finch — the writer on 4 who's also writing 5 — we've got a pretty good story that I think is cool. Once we have a 50-page book, and if we're feeling it, we'll sit with Keanu and shape this thing. "Look, everybody seems to want it. It's a matter of whether we crack it. We're actively working on it. It's just … is it going to be satisfying?" Stahelski added that while Lionsgate wants John Wick: Chapter 5, the sequel isn't locked in just yet. He explained: "The studio would very much will it into existence, I'm sure, at some point. Look, they've been great and they've asked us to really try and we have a really good couple of ideas and we're going to try." The filmmaker added that even if John Wick: Chapter 5 ultimately doesn't come to fruition, he and his creative team will likely discover plenty of other ideas that could be reworked for a spin-off in the process of developing the movie, such as the Ana de Armas-starring Ballerina. Stahelski said: "If we go down the road of John Wick 5 and build this story and decide this isn't right, there are probably going to be 10 other things we'll discover that we'll use for other things. "It's a great creative exercise. It's being in the room riffing with people we love. That's nothing but wins." Ballerina - which also stars Norman Reedus, Ian McShane, Lorenza Izzo, Anjelica Huston and the late Lance Reddick - follows Eve Maccaro, a deadly assassin who seeks vengeance for her family's murder and unleashes her fury against those who wronged her. The film is also set to include John Wick as an adversary of Macarro's, though Stahelski revealed this wasn't always in the plan, and he was initially "kind of against" bringing in Reeves' assassin. He explained: "That wasn't in the original script. To be honest, I was kind of against it. But I do see the benefit and we wanted to help out [director Len Wiseman]. "We had just opened John Wick 4 and it was huge. He couldn't go back to the model of the first John Wick and do a little $18 million indie thing and try to build it up. "In order to stay in the same game, you got to give him a fighting chance. And the easiest way to transfer that over — at least, from the studio point of view — was have Wick in Ballerina in a special timeline."

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors The "John Wick" spinoff, "Ballerina: From the World of John Wick," is almost here, and Lionsgate has released a full clip, lasting a little over a minute, of a particularly brutal fight in a kitchen. Ana de Armas's Eve squares off against who appears to be no more than a cook, but soon proves to have a lot more fighting prowess than your average chef. You can watch the clip below. From butcher knives to mallets to plates, Eve and her assailant use just about everything but the kitchen sink against one another, including the kitchen cooler. Lionsgate "Ballerina" is an important milestone for the "John Wick" universe, marking the very first cinematic spinoff of the IP, but certainly not the last. Along with the upcoming "John Wick: Chapter 5", there's a lot more content coming out of the world of assassins, high tables, and killer dancers. Donnie Yen will star in and direct "Caine" spinning out of his time in "John Wick: Chapter 4". Then there's an anime prequel which will tell the story of how John Wick first got out of his obligations to the High Table, taking place before the events of the first "John Wick" feature. And while it's not so much a spinoff as a companion, any "Wick" fan would regret missing the recently released documentary "Wick Is Pain" about the making of the bloody saga. The "John Wick" world has also extended into television. There was the 2023 prequel series "The Continental," which streamed on Peacock, and coming soon is "John Wick: Under the High Table," which will tell the story of a new generation of assassins spinning out of the events of "John Wick: Chapter 4". While all of these prequels and spinoffs are planned, time will tell whether or not they can stand on their own as anything more than "John Wick" footnotes. "Ballerina" releases in theaters June 6, 2025. The film is directed by Len Wiseman, and stars Ana de Armas, Anjelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne, Lance Reddick, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Norman Reedus, with Ian McShane, and Keanu Reeves. 'When You See Keanu In Pain On Screen, It's Probably Real:' Keanu Reeves Was Like Nah Bro When It Came To The Gym After John Wick Chapter 4

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. The John Wick franchise is known for its incredibly choreographed stunt work. We've seen lots of behind-the-scenes footage of the work Keanu Reeves puts in to get it all perfect. He makes it all look quite easy, but that doesn't mean he doesn't pay a physical price. Keanu Reeves does a lot of his own stunt work in the John Wick movies, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have some help. A new documentary, simply titled, Wick is Pain, takes a look at the making of the action series and its growth from an independent action film to a massive franchise. In the documentary (via USA Today), one of Reeves' stunt men, Jackson Spidell, says that if John Wick ever appears to be in pain on screen, it's probably not acting on the part of Keanu Reeves… When you see Keanu in pain on screen, it's probably for real. Wick is Pain is a great name for a documentary about the franchise, as it is all about pain. The first movie starts with John Wick suffering from emotional pain. From there, he ends up in one fight for his life after another. As the story in the films largely takes place over a short period of time, John Wick has little chance to physically recover, which just means more pain. While John Wick: Chapter 4 finally let the character rest, it seems that John Wick is being called on once again. Chapter 5 is now a project in development, and Reeves admits that going back to play the titular character is something he needs to really think about. Playing John Wick has its own workout routine, and making the last movie took such a toll, he stayed out of the gym for a long time. Reeves said… I didn't go to the gym for over a year. In terms of the future of John Wick, the book isn't closed on that chapter, but it's definitely a chapter that is needing some time to think about. Of course, Keanu Reeves likely did need to go back to the gym for his appearance in From the World of John Wick: Ballerina. The trailers for the John Wick spinoff show him going toe-to-toe with Ana de Armas. We've even seen some behind-the-scenes footage of de Armas and Reeves practicing, which is basically like going to the gym. The good news for Keanu Reeves is that it will likely be a while before he needs to go 'full John Wick' again. John Wick: Chapter 5 is still pretty far in the future. In fact, the next time Keanu plays John Wick, he won't need to go to the gym at all, as he'll be voicing the character for an animated prequel.

Henry Cavill-Led Fantasy Remake Releasing Sooner Than Expected

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors If you've been paying attention to just how much and how fast the world of "John Wick" is expanding, you might be worried that filmmaker Chad Stahelski wouldn't have time for anything else. But according to Collider, the man behind "John Wick" is making time for the remake of "Highlander" a lot sooner than we thought. Stahelski says filming could begin as early as this year, with the film releasing sometime in either 2027 or 2028. Read More: Henry Cavill Led Fantasy Remake Confirmed for Amazon Stahelski was making the rounds to promote the new "John Wick" documentary, "Wick Is Pain," when he revealed the news about "Highlander". "If everything works out in the next 24 hours, we'll be shooting sometime in September," Stahelski said. "And in 2027 or 2028, you'll be watching 'Highlander.'" Henry Cavill in "The Witcher". Henry Cavill in "The Witcher". Netflix Granted, we don't know exactly what it is that needs to work out "in the next 24 hours," but regardless it's surprising and encouraging news for the "Highlander" reboot. All it takes is a quick trip to IMDb to see just how many projects Stahelski has in development, and at the top of the pile is "John Wick: Chapter 5". Then there are all of the "Wick" spinoffs that Stahelski is attached to, including the upcoming "Ballerina", Donnie Yen's "Caine", a prequel "John Wick" animated film, and the TV series "John Wick: Under the High Table". In the original 1986 film "Highlander", Christopher Lambert plays Connor MacLeod, a 16th century Scottish clansman who finds out he's immortal when he inexplicably revives after being killed in battle. He is mentored by the noble hearted Ramirez (Sean Connery) who teaches him all he needs to know about being Immortal. In the present day, MacLeod is an antiques dealer living in New York City at the time of The Gathering: the contest between the last few Immortals for The Prize. "Highlander" has enjoyed multiple sequels as well as both TV and film spinoffs over the years, while Stahelski's film will reboot the story altogether. Last year, Stahelski talked to Collider about some of the differences between the original and what he has planned. "We're bringing it forward from the early 1500s in the highlands to the beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong, and seeing how it goes," Stahelski said. "There's big opportunity for action. There's a chance to play a character that not a lot of people get to play. And it's a bit of a love story, but not how you think." 'John Wick 5' Will Completely Change the Franchise

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors According to Chad Stahelski, who has helmed all of the "John Wick" films so far, the upcoming "John Wick: Chapter 5" is going to be a game changer in terms of the direction of the film series. Speaking to Empire, the filmmaker says "John Wick: Chapter 5" will be "really different" from what we've come to expect. Read More: 'John Wick' Fan-Favorite Star Returning for Spinoff "The saga of John Wick was pretty wrapped up," Stahelski said to Empire. "So the only way to do a '5' is to have a new story that involves John Wick. It's not a continuation, with the High Table. John dealt with his grief. It will be really different, and everybody [will] see the trailer and go, 'Holy f--k... I gotta see that.'" Keanu Reeves as John Wick in "Ballerina" Keanu Reeves as John Wick in "Ballerina" Lionsgate According to Stahelski, "John Wick: Chapter 5" won't be the only place where fans will see this change. The world of "John Wick" is expanding quickly, including a live-action TV show and an animated prequel film. The show, "John Wick: Under the High Table," will take place after the events of "John Wick: Chapter 4" and introduce fans to a new generation of young assassins. Meanwhile, the prequel anime will tell the story of how Wick first got out from under his obligations to the High Table before the events of the first "John Wick" film. Both of these projects, says Stahelski, will lead into "John Wick: Chapter 5". "The John Wick TV show and the animation are big priorities," Stahelski told Empire. "Our idea is to try some things and explore some threads and use those two properties to catapult us forward into the ideas for 'John 5'." Those aren't the only "John Wick" spinoffs on the way, either. "Ballerina" stars Ana de Armas as one of the ballet dancers/assassins introduced in "John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum" on her own mission of vengeance. The film premieres June 6, and Keanu Reeves will be showing up to lock horns with the titular assassin. In the meantime, Donnie Yen will direct and star in "Caine", the spinoff featuring his character introduced in "John Wick: Chapter 4" and taking place after the events of that film. The film is said to be a Hong Kong-style action film in the vein of movies that made Yen famous. Rina Sawayama's Akira, also introduced in "John Wick 4," was recently confirmed to be appearing in the feature as well.
