Merab Dvalishvili's coach downplays broken toe
Last week bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili revealed that he broke his toe two weeks before his UFC 316 rematch with Sean O'Malley. The championship rematch with O'Malley headlines the UFC 316 fight card at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. on June 7. The injury appeared to be similar to what forced Conor McGregor out of his scheduled return at UFC 303 last year. Advertisement In an appearance on Submission Radio, Dvalishvili's coach, John Wood, downplayed the injury. "He loves to rile everybody up. The thing is, as much as people think, 'oh, that's stupid or this or that.' He would never post something that was going to take him out of a fight," Wood told Submission Radio. "So guys, if he's posting something it's really not that bad and it's not going to bother him that bad. "I'm sure he broke his toe but like you don't understand. Every camp and every fighter, even O'Malley says it, everybody is banged up," Wood continued. "There's a level of injuries you go into fights with. That's the way it is. That's the way it's going to be, and that's the way it always is. It's just one of those things, obviously, Merab likes to post about a little more than everybody else. It's alright, though. He's all good." Wood doesn't see a broken pinky toe playing any role in the upcoming UFC 316 title fight. He considers the injury minor compared to others Dvalishvili has had going into fights. "He's had some massive injuries going into some massive fights before, and been banged up. Broken ribs and backs complete out of whack. But that's just the way it goes. He's going go show up and do his job no matter what." Dvalishvili earned the 135-pound championship by defeating O'Malley at UFC 306 last September. Following the fight, O'Malley underwent hip surgery. The rematch with Dvalishvili will be his first fight since losing the title. While O'Malley watched from the sidelines, Dvalishvili successfully defended the title at UFC 311 in January, defeating the Umar Nurmagomedov via unanimous decision.

Merab Dvalishvili's team to warn referee over controversial Sean O'Malley tactic
Merab Dvalishvili 's coach has said the bantamweight champion 's team will warn the referee ahead of UFC 316, as they aim to combat a controversial tactic used by Sean O'Malley's trainer. When O'Malley knocked out Aljamain Sterling to win the belt in 2023, the latter appeared to bite on a deceiving shout from 'Sugar Sean''s coach Tim Welch, who cried: 'Aljo, you've got to go!' Sterling might have believed it was his own coach shouting, but in any case, he closed range and was knocked out by O'Malley. Welch tried the same tactic when his fighter defended the gold against Dvalishvili in September, but he was unsuccessful in two senses; Welch was warned by referee Herb Dean, and Dvalishvili cruised to a decision win to become champion. At UFC 316 on 7 June, Dvalishvili looks to build upon January's successful defence against Umar Nurmagomedov, as he puts his belt on the line against O'Malley in New Jersey. And ahead of that rematch, the champion's head coach, John Wood, will make sure to speak to whichever referee is appointed. Wood told MMA Fighting on Monday (19 May): 'Of course we'll have that talk, of course it will be brought up. And I think Tim will do it again, but feel free to talk to Merab all you want; it just gave him more motivation, so I'm good. Tell Merab what you want him to do, and he'll go ahead and do it. 'It didn't work, it's not gonna work again. I've stated this before: whatever you think you've got to do to get your fighter up for the game, whatever you think you've got to do as a coach to try to take advantage, do it. As long as it's within the [rules]. I actually think that's a rule – you're not supposed to do that – but I mean, the old saying [is]: 'If you ain't cheating, you ain't trying.' 'I would never feel like I would have to talk to Sean or anybody else Merab's fighting to get an advantage, so go ahead, and if it gets you more hits or clicks on your podcast or TikTok or whatever those guys do, then great for you. He got a lot of play off that. 'I think Tim's a good coach, I like Tim personally, I don't take any offence to it. Do I think it's stupid? Absolutely, but I guess maybe they think it worked for the Aljo fight, so: 'It's something we're gonna keep on doing.' 'Go ahead. We'll talk to the referees about it, but I don't think it's going to be a problem in any way, shape or form.' Wood added: 'There's a lot of people that have had successful careers and cheated a lot. And I'm not saying that Tim's cheating; it's maybe bending the rules.' American O'Malley, 30, has not fought since losing the bantamweight belt to Dvalishvili at the Sphere in Las Vegas. Meanwhile, the latter's defence against Nurmagomedov saw the Georgian, 34, mount a stunning comeback. On two of the judges' scorecards, Dvalishvili came from two rounds down to win the final three against Nurmagomedov, while the third card also awarded the 'Machine' the first frame. With that, Dvalishvili extended his win streak to a remarkable 12 fights, dating back to 2018. When Dvalishvili and O'Malley clash again, it will be in one of two bantamweight title bouts at UFC 316; the co-main event sees Julianna Pena defend the women's 135lb belt against Kayla Harrison – a former PFL champion and Olympic gold-medalist judoka.

Shropshire: Controversial River Onny pipeline plan scrapped
A controversial pipeline scheme near the Powys border has been scrapped. Severn Trent Water wanted to transfer fully treated wastewater from its plant in Bishop's Castle and discharge it into the River Onny. Currently, the water enters the Snakescroft Brook, which runs into the River Kemp and the River Clun. Severn Trent is required to upgrade the treatment works in Bishop's Castle to improve the quality of the brook, which is currently failing to achieve good status under the Water Framework Directive. The Clun is a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) due to its endangered freshwater pearl mussels, meaning that any development plans in the area, including housing projects, are subject to strict environmental regulations to minimise any adverse impact. The Onny does not have the same status. However, local anglers and conservationists say it is home to wildlife including otters and kingfishers, and is a vital breeding ground for brown trout, grayling and Atlantic salmon. A petition to stop the scheme gathered more than 9,000 signatures, and more than 200 people packed the Community College in Bishop's Castle in March to tell Severn Trent of their concerns. However, Severn Trent has confirmed the scheme will now not go ahead after initial modelling work showed it would not deliver the environmental benefits originally thought. The firm says it will look to develop an alternative proposal. John Wood, from the Onny Preservation Group, said: 'We are extremely grateful that Severn Trent and the other members of the Strategic Clun Liaison Group (the Environment Agency, Natural England and Shropshire Council) have listened to the concerns of the residents of South Shropshire, and that Severn Trent has dropped its plan for the pipe. The Onny is a much-loved stream, home to a wide variety of wildlife, as well as being an important breeding ground for Atlantic salmon. This decision will help ensure that the Onny can have a bright future and hopefully flourish for many years to come.' Sharing the news on Facebook, Councillor Ruth Houghton (Lib Dem, Bishop's Castle) said she was very pleased that the plan won't go ahead, while Councillor Josh Dickin (Lib Dems, Craven Arms) added that he never supported it. This is very welcome news and I'm glad Severn Trent have seen sense and stopped before they got to far,' said Cllr Dickin. All credit must go to the Save The Onny Preservation group. They have managed to stand up and be noticed, and without them, this correct decision probably wouldn't have been made. "Yes, we need houses built in our lovely part of the world, that are affordable, for local people, which will help my generation to stay in the area. But, now all stakeholders need to sit down and reset and meet to find a new way forward.' OTHER NEWS: A Severn Trent spokesperson said: 'We'd like to thank the Bishop's Castle community and the Onny Preservation Group for their engagement from the outset and input throughout this process. "We have always said that if the evidence didn't support the desired outcomes, and it wasn't the right thing to do, then it wouldn't proceed. "We'd now like to reassure people that the proposed pipeline will not be built.
