Coastal Empire HSSA: Moose Bringer wins Georgie state wrestling title; brother Bear is 4th

They possess two of the more unique names in high school wrestling. On Saturday, one of them became a state champion. South Effingham's Moose Bringer finished third in the Georgia Class 6A state tournament as a sophomore and was the state runner-up last year. This year, as a senior, he is a state champion, bringing home the title with a 9-2 win in the 157-pound title match. And Moose's younger brother – his name is Bear, of course – finished fourth at 106 pounds. Both Moose, whose real name is Brandon although nobody calls him that, and Bear, real name Brayden, were nominees for the Coastal Empire High School Sports Awards Boys Wrestler of the Year award last year, which was won by teammate Ashton Anderson. Moose and teammates Tahrik Bailey, a freshman, and Emilio Santana, a senior all won state titles. Santana was also an HSSA Boys Wrestler of the Year nominee last year. Moose bringer finishes his final season 67-2 and holds the school's career wins record with more than 220, according to the Savannah Morning News' Dennis Knight. South Effingham finished third in the team standings. The 2024-25 Coastal Empire High School Sports Awards, Presented by Georgia Ports, are May 27 at Johnny Mercer Theatre at the Savannah Civic Center. Tickets will be available soon. The show is produced with the support of Chatham Orthopaedic Associates. Savannah to host ‘Romeo & Juliet' by the South Carolina Ballet

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – It's a timeless tale of star-crossed lovers, but have you ever seen 'Romeo & Juliet' portrayed entirely through dance? Saturday, February 1, is the chance to do just that at the Johnny Mercer Theatre in Downtown Savannah, just two weeks before Valentine's Day. Director William Starrett joins WSAV's Andrew Davis to talk about the show and the journey that William Shakespeare's most iconic play can be taken through dance. 'The words aren't forced down your throat[…]you can take your own private journey with Romeo and Juliet,' Starrett said. For those who may feel hesitant about an evening at the ballet? 'A male might say, 'oh, God, ballet. I don't know',' said Starrett. 'But, they have sword fighting, a ballroom scene and Mercutio is hysterical and Tybalt is very forceful. It's the classic story. Maybe you'll learn something from the romantic side of Romeo.' Starrett believes that the story transcends time and feels the excitement of bringing the ballet to Savannah. Curtains will lift at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. For tickets, click here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
