City breaks ground on $2M renovation of La Raza Park

DENVER (KDVR) — The city of Denver broke ground last Thursday on a $2 million renovation of La Raza Park, located in the Sunnyside neighborhood. The renovation project is being done to preserve the 'historic' park's 'cultural heritage' and role as a 'vibrant community space,' the city said. The park was officially designated as Denver's third historical cultural district in 2023. Frisco Bay Marina summer seasons kicks off Friday 'La Raza Park is a testament to the resilience of community,' said Jolon Clark, Executive Director of Denver Parks & Recreation, in a statement. 'These improvements will ensure that the park continues to serve as a place of pride and connection for generations to come.' The renovation project was funded through Elevate and RISE Denver General Obligation (GO) Bond Programs, DPR Capital Funds, the Denver Parks Legacy Fund and the Denver Foundation, the city said. La Raza Park is known to be a central gathering place for the Chicano and Latino communities, according to the city, which said the space has for decades hosted civil rights activism, cultural traditions and community celebrations. Full list of concerts at Ball Arena in 2025 'La Raza Park is more than just open space—it's the soul of our neighborhood,' said City Council President Amanda P. Sandoval, in a statement. 'For generations, this has been a place of culture, resistance, and community.' Planned improvements to the park include: Renovation of playgrounds for children of all ages Enhancement of picnic and gathering areas Landscaping and irrigation system upgrades Accessibility upgrades, including ADA-compliant pathways Preservation of 'key' cultural landmarks, such as the Kiosko, Plaza de la Raza and 'La Riza Unida' sculpture.
