A's pitcher Gunnar Hoglund to miss rest of season after hip surgery

(Jon Blacker/The Canadian Press via AP) Athletics right-hander Gunnar Hoglund had season-ending hip surgery on Friday after he made his big league debut last month. Hoglund, 25, experienced a setback while he was on the 15-day injured list with a left hip impingement. The operation was performed by Dr. Marc Phillipon in Colorado, and the A's said the pitcher is expected to recover in time for spring training. Advertisement Hoglund was selected by Toronto with the No. 19 pick in the 2021 amateur draft. He was projected as a potential top-10 pick before having Tommy John surgery leading up to the draft. He was shipped off to the A's when the Blue Jays acquired All-Star third baseman Matt Chapman in March 2022. Hoglund made his major league debut when he pitched six sparkling innings in a 6-1 win at Miami on May 2. He went 1-3 with a 6.40 ERA in six starts with the A's this year. ___ AP MLB:

(Jon Blacker/The Canadian Press via AP) TORONTO (AP) — Spencer Torkelson drove in the tiebreaking run with a two-out single in the seventh inning and the Detroit Tigers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 on Sunday, improving their MLB-best record to 31-16. Jackson Jobe (4-0) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings, becoming the first pitcher in Tigers history to have the team win the first eight starts of his career. Detroit won the first seven starts right-hander Howie Koplitz made in 1961 and 1962. Advertisement Torkelson had two hits and three RBIs as Detroit won for the 13th time in 17 games. Will Vest finished for his fifth save in seven chances. Blue Jays left-hander Mason Fluharty (3-1) allowed two runners to reach in the seventh inning after coming on in relief of José Berríos. Torkelson hit a two-run double off Berríos in the first but Toronto tied it in the fourth on RBI singles by Alejandro Kirk and Ernie Clement. Akil Baddoo made back-to-back great plays to end the first after Toronto opened with consecutive singles. First, Baddoo scaled the left field wall to catch Daulton Varsho's drive, then he made a sliding catch on Kirk's liner and threw to second to double off Bo Bichette. Advertisement Anthony Santander was Toronto's designated hitter after not starting the previous two games. Blue Jays manager John Schneider dropped the struggling Santander from third in the order to fifth. Santander went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts. Key moment Torkelson singled on an 0-1 pitch from right-hander Braydon Fisher to score Gleyber Torres in the seventh. Key stat Detroit catcher Dillon Dingler had three hits, all with exit velocities of 105 mph or higher. Up next Tigers: Detroit begins a three-game series at St. Louis on Monday. (Jon Blacker/The Canadian Press via AP) TORONTO (AP) — Alejandro Kirk hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1 on Wednesday night. Brendon Little (2-0) got four outs for the win, Yariel Rodríguez pitched the eighth and Yimi García finished for his third save in six chances. Advertisement Kirk had two hits, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. reached base three times and scored a run as the Blue Jays bounced back from Tuesday's 11-9 defeat and won for the fifth time in six games. Rays right-hander Ryan Pepiot (2-5) allowed three runs and six hits in six innings, extending his winless streak to three starts. He walked one and struck out seven. Pepiot walked Guerrero to begin the sixth before striking out Anthony Santander and George Springer. Daulton Varsho singled and Kirk followed with a 407-foot homer to center. Kirk came up against reliever Eric Orze in the eighth with runners at second and third, but center fielder Kameron Misner made a sliding catch on Kirk's sinking liner to end the threat. Advertisement Blue Jays right-hander Chris Bassitt allowed one run and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out six. Misner hit an RBI single off Bassitt in the fourth, but Tampa Bay could have scored more. Misner was tagged out at home plate trying to score from third base on Travis Jankowski's grounder, and Danny Jansen grounded out to strand a runner. Key moment Kirk fell behind 0-2 before homering on Pepiot's next pitch. The homer was Kirk's third. Key stat The Rays are 6-15 against AL opponents. (Jon Blacker/The Canadian Press via AP) TORONTO (AP) — Alejandro Kirk hit a game-ending, bases-loaded single in the 10th inning and the Toronto Blue Jays overcame a six-run deficit to beat the Boston Red Sox 7-6 in Lucas Giolito's return on Wednesday night, stopping a three-game losing streak. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. started the 10th as the automatic runner on second, Justin Slaten (0-1) intentionally walked Daulton Varsho and George Springer with one out and Kirk singled to left. Advertisement Jeff Hoffman (3-0) struck out three in two hitless innings. Anthony Santander tied the score in the seventh with his fourth home run this season, a three-run drive off Garrett Whitlock. Kirk and Varsho started the rebound from a 6-0 deficit with back-to-back homers in the sixth off Giolito, who made his Red Sox debut more than 15 months after signing a a $38.5 million. two-year contract, Giolito didn't pitch last season because of a partial tear in his right ulnar collateral ligament, then had been sidelined since spring training due to a strained left hamstring. Toronto began the night with 16 homers, 29th among the 30 teams, and hit three homers in a game for the first time this season. Advertisement Yariel Rodríguez's run-scoring balk and Alex Bregman's seventh homer built a 2-0 lead in the first, and Jarren Duran hit an RBI single in the second and scored on Rafael Devers' double. Carlos Narváez stretched the lead to 6-0 with a two-run homer off Chad Green in the sixth. Key moment )Kirk lined a single over Jarren Duran to end the game.
