EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Las Cruces Police Department says it made 58 felony arrests, 59 misdemeanor arrests, and seized nearly 55 grams of methamphetamine in its first two months of their 'Operation Not In Vain' which is a crime reduction project to commemorate the life of Las Cruces Police Department Officer Jonah Hernandez who was killed in the line of duty in February 2024. Through May, officers working the operation made 500 traffic stops resulting in 128 citations, recovered eight stolen firearms, located four stolen vehicles, seized narcotics in four separate searches, issued 28 trespass warnings, and executed eight search or arrest warrants, the Police Department said. The operation so far has also recorded 384 consensual contacts with citizens, 61 contacts with businesses, and has generated 72 incident reports, the Police Department said. Besides the 54.5 grams of methamphetamine seized, officers also seized 32.6 grams of fentanyl and two grams of cocaine, the Police Department said. 'The operation is a months-long crime reduction project in memory of fallen Las Cruces Police Department Officer Jonah Hernandez, who was killed in the line of duty Feb. 11, 2024,' the Police Department said. The operation began on April 28 and is anticipated to run through August. 'The operation is utilizing law enforcement personnel and resources from the Las Cruces Police Department, New Mexico State Police, the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office, New Mexico State University Police, the Third Judicial District Attorney's Office, the U.S. Attorney's Office along with several federal agencies,' the Police Department said. The memorial ceremony comes as part of local law enforcement's observance of National Police Week. EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – A news conference will be held later this month about the officer-involved shooting that killed one and injured another on Thursday morning, May 8, across from Lynn Middle School in Las Cruces, the Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD) announced in a news release. Main St. 'Due to the unfortunate timing of this incident, and with many of our department members traveling to Washington, D.C., for National Police Week to honor Officer Jonah Hernandez, we will delay having a news conference until after our return,' Chief Jeremy Story said. 'We appreciate the community's understanding as we balance our commitment to honoring our heroes with our responsibility to provide transparency in this ongoing investigation.' LCPD said National Police Week is from May 11-17. As we previously reported, a man died, and another person suffered non-life-threatening injuries as a result of an officer-involved shooting that happened at around 6:30 a.m. Thursday at the 900 block of Walnut Street, which is located across Lynn Middle School. However, LCPD said the shooting did not happen on the school campus. LCPD said the officer involved in the incident was not injured. He has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure for such an incident. The Officer-involved Incident Task Force continues investigating, and detectives have yet to confirm the identity of the man who died, LCPD said. LCPD said the Officer-involved Incident Task Force includes investigators from New Mexico State Police, the Las Cruces Police Department, Doña Ana County Sheriff's Office and New Mexico State University Police. EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Las Cruces Police Department, along with several local and federal law enforcement agencies, will collaborate on the 2025 edition of Operation Not in Vain, a months-long crime project in memory of fallen officer Jonah Hernandez. The operation will begin on Monday, April 28, and is anticipated to run through August, according to Las Cruces Police. According to the police department, Hernandez was killed in the line of duty on Feb. 11 of last year after responding to a trespassing call. 'Our first Not in Vain operation was extremely successful and underscored the importance of collaboration among local, state and federal law enforcement agencies,' Jeremy Story, chief of the Las Cruces Police Department, said. 'This year, we're looking to refine those collaborations, continue pursuing initiatives that make Las Cruces a safer city and keep the memory of Jonah alive in the city he served.' According to Las Cruces Police, the initial operation generated 127 felony arrests, 114 misdemeanor arrests, 89 criminal citations and over 1,200 traffic citations. LCPD: Operation 'Not in Vain' records over 300 arrests, 1200 citations 'The men and women of the Las Cruces Police Department have committed to ensure that Hernandez's service to the community be remembered,' Las Cruces Police said. According to the department, for the 2025 operation, law enforcement personnel will concentrate on increasing uniformed presence in violent crime hot spots throughout Las Cruces with a focus on frequent offenders and those identified as drivers of violent crime in the community. Operation Not in Vain will utilize law enforcement resources from the Las Cruces Police Department, New Mexico State Police, the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Office, the Third Judicial District Attorney's Office, the U.S. Attorney's Office and several other federal agencies.
