Mainz up to third in Bundesliga after win at Borussia Mönchengladbach

MONCHENGLADBACH, Germany (AP) — Mainz continued its push for a place in next year's Champions League with an accomplished 3-1 win at Borussia Mönchengladbach that lifted it into third place in the Bundesliga on Friday. Paul Nebel got the opener before halftime with a deflected shot that stranded Mönchengladbach goalkeeper Jonas Omlin. Dominik Kohr doubled the advantage six minutes into the second half when he pounced on a rebound in the box and fired home. Stefan Lainer got the home side back into the game with less than 20 minutes left but Nadiem Amiri restored Mainz's two-goal cushion just four minutes later. The result extended Mainz's unbeaten league run against Mönchengladbach to nine league games and kept it on course for its best ever Bundesliga finish, above its fifth place in 2012. Mönchengladbach was in eighth place. ___ AP soccer: The Associated Press

Omlin handed one-match ban from DFB

The Deutscher Fussball-Bund, or German Football Association, has handed down a one-match ban to Gladbach's Jonas Omlin this afternoon. The sports court of the DfB came to the decision of unsportsmanlike conduct from the player after a review. Omlin received a straight red card in the 28th-minute of Borussia Monchengladbach's 3-0 defeat to FC Augsburg last Saturday. Match referee Florian Exner had no option but to send the Swiss shot-stopper off after a mistimed tackle on Fredrik Jensen. The 31-year-old will be suspended for Die Fohlen's trip to face FC Heidenheim on Matchday 24 of the Bundesliga next Saturday. Tobias Sippel, who replaced Kevin Stoeger after Omlin's dismissal, looks set to play in goals for Gerardo Seoane's team. Alternative goaltender, Moritz Nicolas is already sidelined with a season-ending injury.

Jess Thorup: 'I had to raise my voice a bit.'

Jonas Omlin's first-half red card makes life difficult for Borussia Mönchengladbach, who suffered a 3-0 home defeat to FC Augsburg. Alexis Claude-Maurice scored a 15-minute hat-trick for the visiting side after the break. 'We had a very good start,' Seoane went for the positives in his post-match reaction. 'But we didn't get more out of the possession. The numerical superiority was created because we weren't determined enough. Immediately after the red card, we still had some good situations. 'However, the longer the game went on, the more we were forced to defend in the block. We could have defended the three goals better. Overall, we made too many mistakes in this game.' Gladbach's defender Nico Elvedi took responsibility for Omlin's red card. 'It was a bad back pass from me. I feel extremely sorry for Jonas (Omlin). We made it too easy for Augsburg in several situations.' said the experienced center-back. Augsburg's coach Jess Thorup agrees with his counterpart on Gladbach's strong start. "We didn't get off to a good start. In the first ten minutes, Gladbach's strengths on the ball were evident, and we were challenged defensively. Then came the red card,' said the coach who celebrated his 55th birthday yesterday. 'We probably thought it would be easy after the sending-off,' he continued before sharing the half-time mood in Augsburg's dressing room. 'I had to raise my voice a bit. Then, we controlled the game and created chances. The fact that we are now unbeaten in seven games gives us confidence for the challenges ahead." Claude-Maurice, who became the first Augsburg player to score a flawless Bundesliga hat-trick (consecutive three goals all in one half), also shared his delight after the game. 'I'm happy about the win and the three goals. It's an honor for me to be the first Augsburg player to score a flawless hat-trick in the Bundesliga.'
