Tazewell County Sheriff's Office celebrates National Police Week

TAZEWELL, VA (WVNS) – The rain did not stop the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office Cookout, honoring National Police Week. The event played host to a free meal. The Sheriff's Department also partnered with MARSH Regional Blood Center. MARSH was on-site taking blood from those who wished to donate. The Chief Deputy of the Sheriff's Office says MARSH is unique in the way they donate the blood given to them. 'They're always needing blood. And the cool thing about our blood draw is their motto is give here, stay here. So you give here in Tazewell County, Your blood stays in this region. So it's just a wonderful opportunity to give back,' said Chief Deputy Jonathan Hankins. UPDATE: Woman found safe after being reported missing in Tazewell County The meal provided was free, but the Sheriff's Office was taking up donations. The donations will be going towards a family in need, in the area. Chief Deputy Hankins tells 59News that opportunities to connect with the community are always important. 'Community relations is the most important because, I mean, you have to be connected with your community. The community deserves the relationship with law enforcement. What we're trying to do, we're just trying to to foster the relationships, you know, build upon the relationships have already have,' said Hankins.
