Man, 28, dies in crash on I-10; CHP says drunk driver flipped car and survived

A 28-year-old man was killed Wednesday when the car he was riding in overturned on Interstate 10 in Whitewater. The California Highway Patrol said the driver lost control while drunk at the wheel. The crash happened at 2:20 a.m. on eastbound I-10, just west of Highway 62, according to the CHP. Officer Jonathan Torres told City News Service that 25-year-old John Hernandez of Thousand Palms was driving his 2024 Honda Civic at an unconfirmed speed when he allowed the car to drift right and go out of control, causing it to roll at least once. No other vehicles were involved. Riverside County Fire Department crews reached the location a short time later and pronounced the passenger, identified only as a Cathedral City resident, dead at the scene. Torres said investigating officers soon determined Hernandez was under the influence. He was taken to a regional trauma center for treatment of unspecified injuries and was formally arrested on suspicion of DUI gross vehicular manslaughter. As of Wednesday afternoon, the suspect had not yet been booked into a county detention facility. CHP officers kill man in Riverside County after he allegedly threw rocks at cars

California Highway Patrol officers shot and killed a man in San Jacinto on Monday after he allegedly threw rocks at moving cars, the agency said in a statement. At around 4:48 p.m. Monday, CHP officers responded to "reports of a male subject throwing rocks toward oncoming vehicles" near Gilman Springs Road east of State Route 79, the statement said. The suspect then threw rocks at the officers, who tried to use "verbal commands and non-deadly force options" to subdue him, CHP said. The suspect continued to advance toward the officers, who then shot him, according to CHP. The officers had the option of using tasers or bean bags before shooting, CHP spokesperson Jonathan Torres said, but he was unclear which was used in this situation. No weapon was found at the scene, he said. The officers provided medical aid to the suspect until emergency personnel could take over, according to CHP. Cal Fire later pronounced the man dead at the scene. The officers were uninjured, and the shooting is under investigation by the Riverside County Force Investigation Detail, the statement said. CHP encouraged those with information to contact Torres at (951) 846-5300 or after hours at (916) 407-7511. Sign up for Essential California for news, features and recommendations from the L.A. 1 killed, 2 hospitalized in wrong-way Riverside County crash

A wrong-way multi-vehicle crash left one person dead and two others hospitalized in Riverside County Friday. California Highway Patrol responded to the crash on the eastbound 10 Freeway, west of the Whitewater Rest Area, at around 2:40 a.m. A 25-year-old Palm Springs man driving a Volkswagen Jetta was traveling the wrong way on freeway lanes when he crashed head-on into an oncoming GMC Envoy SUV. The impact pushed the SUV into the center median, while the suspect's car was shoved into the path of another oncoming vehicle, a Toyota C-HR. The Volkswagen driver was killed on impact, CHP said. The SUV driver, a 49-year-old Los Angeles man, suffered serious injuries in the crash. The Toyota driver, a 22-year-old La Quinta woman, suffered moderate injuries. Both were transported to the hospital for treatment. The events leading up to the deadly crash are under investigation. It's unclear whether alcohol or drugs were a factor, officials said. Neither the suspect's nor the victims' names were released. Anyone with information on the case can call CHP San Gorgonio Pass Area at 951-846-5300, CHP Officer Jonathan Torres at 951-846-5300 or during after-hours, call 916-407-7511.
