PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Overall, Portland saw a decrease in the number of shooting incidents in 2024 compared to the year before. However, some neighborhoods continue to struggle with high rates of gun violence compared to the rest of the city. While there were 1,025 shooting incidents in the Rose City in 2023, last year's figure stands at 803, according to shooting incident statistics by the Portland Police Bureau. According to the data, it's been steadily declining ever since. In terms of gun-related homicides, there is a similar but slightly different trend. The peak number of gun-related homicides in the past five years happened in 2022, with 73. There were 56 gun-related homicides in 2023 and 53 in 2024. With the latest batch of shooting statistics released this month, the entirety of 2024's numbers are now available. So which Portland neighborhoods saw the most shootings last year? The 80 shooting incidents in Hazelwood marks an increase from the year before, with 77 in 2023. In the five years since police have tracked this data, the Hazelwood Neighborhood has seen 518 shooting incidents since January 2019. The Hazelwood Neighborhood in East Portland encompasses some major shopping centers, including Mall 205 and the Gateway Shopping Center, which are both next to major freeway exchanges. It has frequently topped the list for the neighborhood with the most number of shootings in years past. Portland police said they found 47-year-old Jonathan Trent injured in the parking lot on the afternoon of January 13, 2025. He was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Last week, Portland police said two minors were arrested and accused of being involved with the robbery that led up to the fatal shooting. The two teens, ages 15 and 16, were both lodged in the Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Center. In terms of the number of gun-related homicides that happened in the Hazelwood Neighborhood in 2024, there were eight. In 2023, there were five gun-related homicides in Hazelwood. Two Oregon teens are facing murder and robbery charges after allegedly shooting and killing a man who tried to intervene when they robbed a grocery store. Police received reports of gunshots at a Fred Meyer grocery store in Portland's Hazelwood neighborhood around 3:50 p.m. on Jan. 13., the Portland Police Bureau wrote in a press release. There, they found 47-year-old Jonathan Trent on the ground with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead, according to local station KOIN. "The initial investigation suggests that Trent was shot after witnessing a robbery and attempting to stop the suspect," the police wrote in their press release. "Throughout the course of the investigation, we're able to identify five events that were related to this group," he said. "This type of crime with these youths is fairly uncommon. Unfortunately, guns are available in this community and it's deeply concerning to see youth of this age, armed with firearms." The Multnomah County District Attorney's Office is deciding whether the two teens charged with murder will be tried as adults, KPTV reported. Fox News Digital could not reach the office for comment at press time. The three teens, whose identities have not been released due to their minor status, are all being held at Donald E.
