Plaque unveiled to renowned Dublin artist who died in motorbike crash

The late Jonathan Wade remembered at ceremony at his former home in Walkinstown Today at 07:53 A plaque has been unveiled commemorating the life of renowned Irish artist Jonathan Wade at his home in the Dublin suburb of Walkinstown. Specialising in painting industrial and urban landscapes, Jonathan has been described as one of Ireland's finest visual artists of the last century. He was born in Thomas Street in 1941, and his family moved to 2 Walkinstown Avenue in 1952. It was while living here in his teenage years that he developed his love of painting, and produced many of his earliest works. His first solo exhibition was held in Fergus O'Farrell studios in 1966, followed by the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1968. His largest and most important solo exhibition was held in the Project Arts Centre in Abbey Street in 1970, with 37 paintings on show. He had spent a considerable amount of time in Dublin's dockyards around this time, influencing his output and leading to the creation of a series of paintings depicting landscapes of rusted metal junk. Jonathan is represented today in the collections of The Hugh Lane Gallery and The Arts Council. His work was profoundly shaped by his left-wing political beliefs, and sought to portray a sense of overwhelming industrial catastrophe by painting images of decaying and rusted buildings and machinery. He tragically died in a motorcycle accident in January 1973, following a visit to see his mother, who lived in Walkinstown. Speaking at the plaque unveiling ceremony, local councillor Ray Cunningham said: 'I am honoured to be here on a day when such an influential figure in our cultural heritage is being recognised. 'As public representatives and communities, our focus has moved since Jonathan Wade's time, we are better at improving our cityscapes and protecting our environment. 'It is also important that we protect the heritage of the watcher, the man whose images of twisted metal and broken concrete wilderness marked out his reputation as one of the great visual artists of the last century. 'If there are to be doers, there must be see-ers. The eye of the artist is a treasure and a resource that our city should cherish and celebrate. That is what we have a valuable opportunity to do today.' The plaque was unveiled by the Dublin City Council Commemorations and Naming Committee, a group which facilitates the commemoration of people, events and organisations that have made a unique and significant contribution to Dublin.

Major motorway slip roads to close overnight and the WHOLE weekend

MOTORISTS using a major UK motorway will need to check their journeys before setting off this weekend. The A3 and M25 around Wisley in Surrey will be affected by a series of closures. 2 Junction 10, where both motorways meet, has been part of an ongoing project to widen the A3. From today, the whole interchange will be shut overnight, ahead of further daytime closures planned for the weekend. The closure will be put in place to allow for resurfacing work. Jonathan Wade, project director for National Highways, told BBC Radio Surrey: "You can expect to see some disruption from about 21:00. "So long as you're travelling later at night, you should be OK. "The following weekend, 17 and 18, for that whole weekend you will not be able to transition between the M25 and the A3 at all." "I think there's an air of tolerance" said Mr Wade, "it is a nuisance and we recognise its a nuisance. "It's an imposition on those travelling long distances and those who are impacted by these kind of activities." Workers are hopeful the project will be finished by Spring 2026. This comes as chaos broke out on the M5 yesterday after a 'loose dog' caused a three-car crash between junctions 8 (M50) and 7 (Worcester South). Motorists suffered delays of up to an hour in the aftermath. A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "We received a call around 12.15pm yesterday afternoon (May 11) with a report of a dog loose on the M5 between junctions 8 and 7 resulting in a collision between three vehicles." "Officers attended and one person was taken to hospital with injuries." Further delays occurred earlier today after Lane 3 of the M5 was closed following the collision. There was also a crash at 8am today also caused around four miles of congestion which added an hour to normal journey times. A tweet from National Highways reads: "Lane 3 is closed on the #M5 southbound between J7 #Worcester and J8 #M50 due to a collision. "Lanes 1 and 2 remain open. "There is around 4 miles of congestion on approach which is adding about an hour to normal journey times." Lanes were reopened around 10am, with expected delays of around half an hour remaining. They updated motorists on Twitter saying: "All lanes are now open on the #M5 southbound between J7 #Worcester and J8 #M50." 2 Tips for driving in the heat Temperatures to climb to 23C this week, said the Met Office Stay Hydrated: Keep a bottle of water in the car to ensure you stay refreshed. Check Tyres: Heat can increase tyre pressure—check for proper inflation and any signs of wear. Use Air Conditioning: Ensure your car's air conditioning is functioning effectively to stay cool. Protect Yourself: Wear sunglasses to reduce glare and use sunshades to keep the interior cool. Plan Ahead: Avoid driving during peak heat hours if possible and allow extra time for your journey. Emergency Kit: Carry essentials like water, sunscreen, and a phone charger in case of delays.

M25/A3 drivers face overnight interchange closures

Drivers planning to use the A3 and M25 around Wisley in Surrey are being warned of overnight closures planned for this week and next weekend. A long-term project to widen the A3 where it meets the M25 at the motorway's junction 10 has lead to a series of closures. The latest, with two slip roads being shut, was due to be lifted by 06:00 on Monday. From Monday to Thursday the whole interchange will be shut overnight, with drivers unable to join or leave either road at that junction, with daytime closures planned for the weekend. Jonathan Wade, project director for National Highways, told BBC Radio Surrey: "You can expect to see some disruption from about 21:00. "So long as you're travelling later at night, you should be OK. "The following weekend, 17 and 18, for that whole weekend you will not be able to transition between the M25 and the A3 at all." The overnight closures are to allow for resurfacing work, with the weekend closures due to be in place from 21:00 BST on 16 May to 06:00 BST on 19 May. The project is due or completion by Spring of 2026. "I think there's an air of tolerance" said Mr Wade, "it is a nuisance and we recognise its a nuisance. "It's an imposition on those travelling long distances and those who are impacted by these kind of activities." Follow BBC Surrey on Facebook, on X. M25 shuts this weekend to add to Heathrow travel chaos

The final M25 weekend closure as part of a delayed £317 million project to improve one of the motorway's most dangerous junctions begins on Friday. The motorway will be closed between Junctions 10 (Wisley) and 11 (A320 Chester) in Surrey from 9pm on Friday, 21 March until 6am on Monday, 24 March to allow National Highways to demolish and remove a bridge which is no longer needed. Diversion routes on A roads will be in place. Drivers are being urged to avoid the area unless their journey is 'absolutely necessary'. Among the people affected by this weekend's closure will be many of those travelling to, from and between Gatwick Airport and some football fans driving home from the England vs Albania football match at Wembley. The project has seen two previous closures on weekends within the last month, when drivers heading to Heathrow Airport were also warned that delays to their journeys were expected. However, Heathrow announced it will be closed until 11.59pm on Friday, 21 March due to a significant power outage caused by a fire at an electrical substation. Heathrow has advised passengers to travel to the airport and contact their airline for further information. National Highways said that the M4 spur for Heathrow is closed southbound between the M4 and Junction 4A due to the closure of the airport. This will be the fifth and final M25 closure as part of the project, which started in summer 2022. National Highways said there was a 'notable increase in traffic' during the previous closure a fortnight ago compared with the first three closures in 2024. Senior project manager Jonathan Wade said: 'We are now on the home straight of this complex project and we are pleased to say this is the last time the M25 will be closed over a full weekend. 'Two weeks ago, when we last closed the motorway, we saw higher levels of traffic than in the previous three closures and it caused significant disruption and delays in local areas. 'We obviously want people to spend time enjoying themselves, we don't want anyone to be stuck in long traffic jams. 'If you're travelling around Surrey this weekend, I'd again urge you to only use the motorway and surrounding areas if your journey is absolutely necessary. 'Please allow extra time and use alternative routes where possible, and make sure you follow our official diversions, and not information from sat-navs.' Shaun Jones, AA Patrol of the Year, said: 'We urge drivers, particularly those in HGVs, to follow the signed diversionary routes rather than using sat-navs or Google Maps. 'During the previous closure, an HGV driver had to be rescued by Surrey Police from Pyrford Lock as they had followed Google Maps and not the agreed diversion route. 'Drivers should allow plenty of extra time for their journey, and those attending the England match on Friday evening should be aware of extra traffic after the match has ended.' The project is increasing the number of lanes at Junction 10 in an attempt to improve safety and cut congestion.
