Jonathon Cooper's restructure wasn't out of the blue

News broke on Friday that the Denver Broncos restructured pass rusher Jonathon Cooper's contract, a move that saved the team $3.2 million in 2025 salary cap space. We noted on Friday that the restructure did not necessarily mean a move was on the way for Denver. That notion has been confirmed by KUSA-TV's Mike Klis. "Easy now," Klis tweeted Friday. "When Broncos signed OLB Jonathon Cooper to 4-yr, $54M extension in [November], there was a clause stating Broncos could convert $3.2M of $4M roster bonus due March 17 (Monday) into signing bonus. Broncos exercised that clause. Relax and enjoy March Madness." So it wasn't a decision made quickly to free up space -- it was essentially a procedural move that was greenlit in November and executed in March. The Broncos now have about $17.4 million in available salary cap space, according to but some of that will go toward the team's rookie class. A few more budget signings could be on the way, but Denver's splash deals are likely done. Broncos have 5 pass rushers on roster ahead of NFL free agency

Ahead of the start of NFL free agency next week, the Denver Broncos currently have five pass rushers (outside linebackers) signed for the 2025 season. Last year, the Broncos went into preseason with eight pass rushers on the 90-man offseason roster, so general manager George Paton is poised to add more OLBs to the squad this spring. Note that we are not listing linebacker Drew Sanders as an edge defender because Paton and coach Sean Payton both said at the NFL combine that Sanders will play as an inside linebacker in 2025. The team's starting OLBs -- Jonathon Cooper and Nik Bonitto -- are both returning, as are rotational backups Jonah Elliss and Dondrea Tillman. The fifth pass rusher on the roster is Andrew Farmer, who spent most of last season on the practice squad. View the team's OLBs below, with salary cap hits provided by Jonathon Cooper ($10.14 million) Nik Bonitto ($5.69 million) Jonah Elliss ($1.33 million) Dondrea Tillman ($960,000) Andrew Farmer ($960,000) Denver led the NFL with 63 sacks last season. Bonitto (13.5) led the way, followed by Cooper (10.5). They will now look to build on those totals in 2025.
