Watch moment police helicopter breaks up mass beach brawl between high school kids sending them scrambling
THIS is the jaw-dropping moment when a police chopper descended over a beach to break up brawling highschoolers. Staggering footage shared on social media shows the helicopter flying low over a large crowd of youngsters on Jones Beach. 4 4 The dramatic scene took place during a high school senior skip day party on Thursday. Groups of teens from several high schools across Nassau County and Queens were all crowded onto the beach. But several fights broke out during the day, prompting a cop callout. Police sent a chopper to the beach to disperse the groups of brawling teens. Around 500 highschoolers were crowded onto the beach at the time of the incident, News 12 Long Island reported. The footage shows the helicopter hovering over the crowds, who quickly disperse. As the kids scramble for cover, shrouds of sand can be seen thrown up into the air. The teens had been drawn to the beach by a flyer that had circulated that day, local media has reported. But while the high schoolers had headed to the seaside for a relaxing, carefree day, witnesses say the situation quickly got out of control. Cops restricted access to parts of the beach to prevent the situation escalating further. However, there were no reports of serious injuries. One person was arrested for menacing and disorderly conduct, according to Nassau County Police. Beachgoers have told local media that such incidents offer a different picture of the area from previous years. "The beach was never like this," one local told News 12 Long Island. "We came here as kids — it was so calm. But now it's just crazy." However, officials say the beach is set to reopen as normal on Friday. Commenters on Instagram were divided over how the police handled the situation. One asked: "How many of my tax dollars went towards this helicopter flex?" But another said: "I was there. 500 kids? I thought it was 1,000. "And a lot of them looking for trouble. The police did a good job. "The helicopter was encouraging them to leave by making it windy."

Jones Beach closed after fight breaks out during senior skip day, police say
Jones Beach was closed Thursday after police say several fights broke out during a senior skip day on Long Island. New York State Parks Police said crowds of high school students from Queens and Nassau County packed the beach for an unsanctioned cut day. Police said it started around 3 p.m. without any issues but escalated a few hours later. The beach was shut down, and the crowd was dispersed. At least one person was seen being taken into custody, but there was no word of any charges. Police said multiple agencies stayed on the scene to make sure the area was safe. No injuries were reported. The beach is expected to reopen for normal hours Friday, police said. Nearby in Long Beach, officials said they shut down the beach to prevent a multi-school party last week. The beach there will remain closed except for weekends and holidays until school lets out later this month. Thousands of teens descended on Long Beach around this time last year, resulting in gunfire with one person shot and two arrested. Officials said they have been monitoring social media to track plans for any potential gatherings.

FourLeaf Air Show once stuns a massive crowd at Jones Beach
Nothing kicks off the summer on Long Island better than the annual Four-Leaf Air Show at Jones Beach. The weather held up on Sunday, the second day of the event, and a big crowd descended on the shore to watch the country's servicemembers in action. Many left in awe of the spectacle Carlos Cabrera of Queens calls it the best show on earth. "Life doesn't get any better than this," Cabrera said. "The fly-bys, the ones that catch you off-guard, things like that. That's what I live for." He said this year was his 12th FourLeaf Air Show, formerly known the Bethpage Air Show, now in its 21st year. It was Bay Shore resident Je'Sielle Jackson's first time seeing the air show, which featured not only aircrafts representing branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, but also the U.S. Army Parachute Team, also known as the Golden Knights. "It's cultural family reunion, like all cultures coming together," Jackson said. And getting a good front-row spot early in the day can get competitive. Those who told CBS News New York they came here to set up hours before the show's 10 a.m. start, said it was well worth it. "We got up at like 6 and got here at like 8, so we've been here for a while," Jackson said. "We got here at like 7 o'clock," Cabrera added. Veterans feel the love at the air show Veterans gave out flags at the boardwalk, reminding spectators of the significance of Memorial Day weekend. "Somebody told me, 'You're a hero.' Yeah, to the guys that made it back. What about the guys I didn't save? Just another soldier that did his job," Vietnam veteran Dominic Cutalo said. "I love how it brings us together, how it shows off the military. I couldn't do my job without the support of the community," veteran John Carvajal said. The show was also inspirational for 11-year-old newcomer Niko Pavlou of Queens, who wants to become a pilot. "I think it's really cool. Like, it's history, too, so you see these planes from a long time ago. Just amazed that they're flying today," Pavlou said.

2025 Jones Beach air show to take flight Memorial Day weekend
Despite the dreary weather going into this weekend, the show will go on for the annual Jones Beach air show on Long Island. Hundreds of thousands are expected to turn out for the free display of jaw-dropping aerial excellence — long considered one of the area's official kickoff events to the summer season. The two-day event, officially titled FourLeaf Air Show, returns to the shores of Wantagh on Saturday and Sunday to the delight of flight enthusiasts and beachcombers alike. The United States Air Force Thunderbirds will headline the line-up of shows taking place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Jones Beach State Park. The U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team and other performers — including the U.S. Navy F-35C Tac Demonstration Team, the NY Air National Guard's 106th Rescue Wing and the SUNY Farmingdale State College Flying Rams — will also demonstrate their elite formation skills for the masses. Following the show, the Thunderbirds are set to take flight to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado, before making stops in Yuba County, California and Dayton, Ohio. There are no costs to watch the air show as it is free for public viewing, but the parking fee is $10. Hourly bus service from the Freeport LIRR station to Jones Beach will be provided by Nassau Inter-County Express (NICE) running Friday through Sunday. Pets, drones, balloons and kites are not allowed on the beach during the show. Backpacks are permitted but they may be subject to search by security for safety purposes. Spectators are encouraged to bring their own chairs and coolers, as well as their own food. The U.S. Coast Guard will enforce 'No Entry Zones' — marked with orange colored buoys — off the park during the air show. Boats are only allowed beyond those points, preferably to watch from the ocean, by taking a vessel out to nearby Zach's Bay.
