In the liner notes for Joni Mitchell Archives – Vol. 4, she teased the upcoming compilation. "People ask me my favorite of my albums, it's going to be Joni's Jazz," she wrote. The "California" singer-songwriter also dropped the previously unreleased 1980 demo "Be Cool" on June 25, ahead of the upcoming album, with plans of another unreleased demo from that year on the way. Joni's Jazz features an array of music, including "studio recordings, live performances, rare alternate takes, and material drawn from multiple decades and record labels." The songs featured on the compilation are from her albums Songs To A Seagull, The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejira, Mingus, Turbulent Indigo and Both Sides Now. One of the earlier recordings featured is "Marcie" from the 1968 album Songs to a Seagull. Plus, her live 2023 performance of "Summertime" at the Newport Folk Festival is also part of the massive compilation. Fans who preorder the vinyl and CD versions will also receive liner notes with rare and previously unseen photos and original artwork by Mitchell. Earlier this year, Mitchell appeared at the FireAid Benefit Concert, which raised money to rebuild communities and help those affected by the Los Angeles wildfires. Perched on her throne, she performed "Both Sides Now" at the Kia Forum while tapping along with a black cane. She also performed the song at the 2024 Grammy Awards, marking her first time singing at the awards ceremony. Joni's Jazz, which comes out on Sept. 5, is available for preorder.
