Picture: Ex-Man United star Scott McTominay shows his class with heartfelt tribute to retiring Jonny Evans Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay sent a touching message to Jonny Evans as he retires from professional football. Evans decided to finally call it a day, following the expiry of his contract with United. Advertisement He won three Premier League titles, the Champions League, FA Cup and two League Cups with United. Evans also won the FA Cup with Leicester City. The 37-year-old won 107 caps for Northern Ireland and is widely considered one of his country's greatest ever players. Evans enjoyed two spells at Old Trafford, having come through the club's esteemed youth system. He lined up for the Red Devils' senior team between 2006 to 2015 before he left and joined West Brom. After West Brom, Evans signed for Leicester and then returned to United in 2023. He initially went back to United on a short-term deal during their pre-season build-up and in the process, earned himself a one-year deal before he signed a fresh extension, which expired this summer. Advertisement Evans played for the last time on Friday, during United's 3-1 comeback win over Hong Kong. McTominay likely got to know Evans better during the latter's second stint at United, as they shared the dressing room for a year before McTominay made his move to Napoli. Earlier on Sunday, McTominay wrote on Instagram, 'You are one of the best players, characters and professionals I have had the pleasure to play alongside.' 'Very fortunate to share some amazing memories with you.' 'An incredible career and I wish you nothing but the best in your retirement. (Other than when we play golf).' It's evident that Evans left a lasting impression on McTominay. Feature image Francesco Pecoraro via Getty Images Follow us on Bluesky: @

Jonny Evans calls time on glittering career after Man Utd exit
Northern Ireland defender Jonny Evans is retiring, aged 37, after winning three league titles, a Champions League and winning more than a century of international caps Jonny Evans has announced his retirement with the centre back's final appearance coming in Manchester United's post-season friendly win against Hong Kong on Friday. The 107-cap Northern Ireland international won three Premier League titles, a Champions League, two FA Cups, two League cups and a Club World Cup, while making 537 club appearances for United and Leicester City. Evans, 37, was only able to feature sporadically for United during their diabolical season but departs Old Trafford with his reputation untainted. His exit also means next season will be the first time since 1973-74 that not a single player in the squad featured at some point during Sir Alex Ferguson's time as manager. 'It's really nice and the level he has in training, you can see the standards in his prime and you understand why they won so many titles,' current head coach Ruben Amorim said. 'With his age, with a lot of problems physically, when he was fit to train, the level was really high. You can understand he was a very good player.' United are expecting a hectic start to the transfer window. A £62.5m deal for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha is set to be completed after terms were agreed in the past week, while captain Bruno Fernandes has had his deadline for a potential move to join Al Hilal extended. The Saudi club are willing to make the Portugal star one of the world's best players but are determined for him to join ahead of next month's Club World Cup. An initial deadline of last Thursday was set but the latest reports suggest he has until late next week to commit. A three-year deal worth up to £200m in a salary is on offer with Al Hilal also expecting to pay a significant fee for Fernandes. He is reportedly giving serious thought to the offer. Every member of United's squad is available for transfer at the right price as the club counts the cost of their dismal campaign and no European football next season. Ruben Amorim's squad requires a significant overhaul to meet the requirements of his 3-4-2-1 system. But it is accepted that several sales are required to fund new signings. Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho are among those who appear likely to depart this summer.

Man Utd star retires from football to become third major summer departure
Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has retired from football, becoming the club's third major departure of the summer. Evans played for the last time in United red on Friday as part of the club's post-season tour of Asia with Ruben Amorim's side coming from behind to beat the Hong Kong national team. United journalist Andy Miten confirmed the 37-year-old is now set to hang up his boots rather than find another club. The former Northern Ireland international has been a dedicated servant across two spells at Old Trafford. The centre-half broke into the first-team under Sir Alex Ferguson in the 2007-08 season, alongside Gerard Pique. With Pique returning to Barcelona, Evans took on the role as chief understudy to Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, filling in for both men and enjoying a breakout campaign in 2010-11 while Ferdinand was out injured. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Highly-regarded by Ferguson, Evans won three Premier League titles, two League Cups and the Champions League with United – having also won the Championship under Roy Keane while on loan at Sunderland. But after the Scot's departure in 2013, Evans would soon follow. Deemed surplus to requirements by Louis van Gaal who also sold another academy graduate in Danny Welbeck, Evans joined West Brom in 2015, spending three seasons at the Hawthorns before joining Leicester City in 2018. After being released by the Foxes in the summer of 2023, Evans returned to United to train with the club over the summer but was quickly offered a short-term deal. Various injury problems across the United backline have seen him earn plenty of game time, starting in the FA Cup final last year against Manchester City to lift the trophy for the first time. 'He has been a great professional. Whenever he has been fit, he has trained well with very high standards,' Amorim said of Evans. 'He has also proven on the pitch that he is a very good player. The level that he has in training, you can see the standards he had in his prime and why they won so many titles. When he was fit to train the level was really high. I also want Evans to help the young kids beside him.' Evans made 241 appearances during his two spells with United, scoring eight goals and registering seven assists. He is the third high profile departure at Old Trafford with Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof also on their way. Both players have reached the end of their respective contracts. More Trending Eriksen, who scored a penalty on his final appearance at Old Trafford, wrote an emotional farewell message on Friday which read: 'A huge thank you to all the fans who supported me through the last three ears as a Manchester United player. 'Thank you to all the kind and hardworking people at the club who has made me and my family feel so welcomed since day one. And a big thank you to my teammates, it's been a pleasure sharing the changing room and pitch together. 'It's been an amazing time and I've made some incredible memories that I will keep forever.' Chido Obi hits brace as Man Utd bounce back to beat Hong Kong
Teenager Chido Obi's first senior goals for Manchester United helped Ruben Amorim's side bring the curtain down on a money-spinning post-season trip to Asia with a 3-1 comeback win against Hong Kong. Last week's Europa League final defeat to fellow Premier League strugglers Tottenham compounded the Red Devils' worst top-flight campaign since suffering relegation 51 years ago. United travelled to Asia straight after Sunday's game against Aston Villa for a pair of friendlies, which are worth in the region of £8million for a club facing a first season without European football since 2014-15. Amorim's side were booed on Wednesday after losing 1-0 to the ASEAN All-Stars in Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur and returned to action in challenging conditions at the Hong Kong Stadium two days later. Departing Jonny Evans made his final appearance for the club in a side that included captain Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho, who both started amid widespread speculation over their respective futures. United dominated from the outset but, like to so often this season, an inability to take their chances was punished as Juninho put Hong Kong ahead against the run of play with a shot that squirmed past Tom Heaton in the 19th minute. The Red Devils emerged for the second half with an entirely different line-up and 17-year-old substitute Obi levelled with a fine touch and finish in the 50th minute. Mason Mount was denied a penalty as the clock wound down and provided a fine 82nd-minute cross that was glanced home by striker Obi. Ayden Heaven, who like Obi joined from Arsenal this season, completed the victory against Hong Kong with a stoppage-time header.
