Bourbon County Clerk sues county commission

BOURBON CO., Kan. — The newly elected Bourbon County Clerk sued the Bourbon County Commissioners and won, at least for now. Susan Walker, who has been employed with Bourbon County since 2021 as the finance director, was a contract employee with a salary of $95,000 per year. She sued the commissioners in February for breach of contract and violation of the Kansas wage payment act. According to court records, last year, commissioners told Walker her position was being eliminated. In her petition, Walker says the commissioners told her she should run for elected office, due to the elimination of her position, and that her salary would 'follow' her. Walker did run for office and was elected county clerk, and when she didn't receive the 95k salary, she sued. Today, the commissioners filed a motion to set aside the judgment, claiming the lawsuit was not properly served to the appropriate person or persons. Walker has not yet received the money, and a next court date has not yet been set. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Stormwater project begins this week near Ron Richard Memorial Park

JOPLIN, Mo. — Starting Monday, a stormwater project begins on the trail area south of the Senator Ron Richard Memorial Park and East 15th Street in Joplin. Minimal traffic impact is expected, but drivers should watch out for construction vehicles entering the worksite from Southeast Murphy Boulevard. Crews will be adding retaining walls and two rain gardens, as well as sowing native plants in the green space around the channel.
