Jordan: Senate president, EU official discuss cooperation, regional developments

AMMAN — Senate President Faisal Fayez on Monday met with Rapporteur of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee and the official in charge of the Jordan file within the Renew Europe Group Malik Azmani. The meeting focused on strengthening relations between Jordan and the EU, with discussions spanning political, economic, and parliamentary cooperation, as well as the ongoing Israeli aggression in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Fayez underscored the historic and strategic nature of Jordan-EU ties, rooted in mutual respect and shared interests. He also reiterated Jordan's commitment, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah, to advancing cooperation with the EU across various sectors. He also expressed appreciation for the EU's continued support for Jordan's development and its assistance in mitigating the impact of regional crises on the Kingdom's economy. He also welcomed the European Parliament's recent approval of an aid package to Jordan, stressing the importance of deepening economic partnership to reinforce Jordan's stabilising role in the region and contribute to stopping the Israeli war. Highlighting the pressures Jordan faces, Fayez noted the Kingdom's status as the world's largest refugee-hosting country. He emphasised that Jordan shoulders the burden of the Syrian refugee crisis largely alone, warning that it cannot continue providing essential services without increased international support for its Syrian Crisis Response Plan, developed in coordination with international partners. On the situation in Gaza, Fayez warned of the grave humanitarian and political consequences of continued Israeli aggression. He also strongly condemned what he described as Israel's policy of extermination, ethnic cleansing, and forced displacement of Palestinians, calling such practices unacceptable by all moral, legal, and humanitarian standards. He urged the European Parliament and the international community to take effective action to end the war, and called for the revival of a credible political process aimed at ending the occupation and preventing further escalation. Fayez also highlighted His Majesty's ongoing diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire and ensure the uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. He also called on the EU and its parliamentary institutions to continue supporting these efforts, reiterating that the only viable path to lasting peace lies in a two-state solution based on international resolutions. For his part, Azmani reaffirmed the European Parliament's commitment to supporting Jordan economically and financially, commending the Kingdom's resilience in the face of regional challenges. He also commended the King's leadership and Jordan's active role in promoting peace, facilitating humanitarian access, and advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza. © Copyright The Jordan Times. Jordan's exports to EU rise by 4.4% in 2024

Ammon News - Jordan's national exports to the European Union grew by 4.4% in 2024, reaching JD 427 million, compared to JD 409 million in 2023, according to foreign trade data from the Department of Statistics. Meanwhile, the country's imports from the EU declined slightly by 0.5% last year, amounting to JD 2.861 billion, down from JD 2.874 billion in 2023. As a result, Jordan's trade deficit with the EU narrowed to JD 2.434 billion, compared to JD 2.465 billion in the previous year. Total trade volume between Jordan and the EU remained relatively stable, reaching JD 3.288 billion in 2024, compared to JD 3.283 billion in 2023. The Netherlands emerged as the top destination for Jordanian exports within the EU, with shipments rising by 16.5% to JD 92 million in 2024, up from JD 79 million in 2023. Conversely, France remained Jordan's largest EU supplier, with imports from the country totaling JD 267 million last year, a 2.8% decline from JD 275 million in 2023. Ali Murad, President of the Jordanian-European Business Association (JEBA), described the increase in exports as a positive sign of continued trade engagement between Jordan and the EU, despite its modest scale. Murad highlighted several strategic measures to sustain and enhance export growth, including diversifying export products beyond their current limited range, particularly in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, apparel, and chemicals. He also emphasized the need for stronger support mechanisms for exporters through financial, technical, and logistical assistance to improve competitiveness in European markets. He further noted the importance of simplifying rules of origin, with the EU's relaxed regulations extended until 2030, and strengthening trade links between Jordanian businesses and European buyers through participation in trade fairs and business events. Additionally, he underscored the need to leverage new agreements, such as the recently signed Jordan-EU agricultural trade deal, which aims to expand export opportunities. Murad also stressed the importance of providing exporters with accurate information on EU market requirements and attracting more foreign investment to enhance Jordan's export capacity. In January, His Majesty King Abdullah II and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen attended the signing of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between Jordan and the EU in Brussels. The EU announced a €3 billion financial assistance package for Jordan for 2025-2027, including €640 million in grants, €1.4 billion in investments, and €1 billion in macroeconomic support. Petra

To support the goals of this partnership, the EU is tabling a financial package of assistance for Jordan for 2025-2027, worth 3 billion euros. This includes 640 million euros in grants, 1.4 billion euros in investments, and 1 billion euros in Macro-Financial Assistance, according to a Royal Court statement. The signing of the declaration, attended by HRH Crown Prince Hussein, indicates the importance of the partnership between Jordan and the EU, and recognises the Kingdom's role in pursuit of peace and stability in the region. The partnership agreement stipulates enhancing cooperation between the two sides across the political, security and defence fields, as well as in economic resilience, trade and investment, human resources, and support for refugees and host countries. The partnership agreement also includes clauses on strengthening efforts to tackle drug and arms smuggling, incentivising private sector investment, and supporting sectors such as water, energy, technology, and entrepreneurship, the statement said. The agreement stresses the parties' commitment to preserving the historical status quo in the holy sites in Jerusalem, as well as the importance of the Hashemite Custodianship of Muslim and Christian holy sites in the Holy City. In July 2024, Jordan and the EU announced their desire to work towards upgrading relations to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership, embodying the strategic nature of relations and building on the EU-Jordan Association Agreement signed in 1997 and entered into force in 2002. Commenting on the signing of the Joint Declaration on the Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership between Jordan and the European Union, Von der Leyen said Jordan is a key partner for Europe in the Middle East and the Mediterranean, serving as a pillar of regional stability, according to the statement. She added that with this partnership, the EU and Jordan are deepening what is already a long-standing relationship and strong friendship, to better tackle common challenges. The partnership agreement was signed by Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Zeina Toukan and European Union Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Director of the Office of His Majesty Alaa Batayneh, and Jordan's Ambassador to Belgium Yousef Bataineh attended the signing.
