Former Cherokee man pleads not guilty to deadly head-on crash
BUENA VISTA COUNTY, Iowa (KCAU) — A former Cherokee, Iowa, man accused of killing a person in a head-on collision entered a not guilty plea on Tuesday. According to court documents, Jorge Ortega-Ortega, 28, of Worthington, Minnesota, is charged with homicide by vehicle in the death of Roseannabelle Bumsted, 65, of Nemaha. Officials said Ortega-Ortega waived his right to a speedy trial. He turned left into the eastbound lane while driving west, about nine miles east of Cherokee. Authorities said Ortega-Ortega drove past a 'No Passing' sign and stayed in the eastbound lane for around a mile before crashing into Bumsted's vehicle. Cherokee man charged with vehicular homicide for deadly head-on crash
STORM LAKE, Iowa (KCAU) — A Cherokee man has been charged with vehicular homicide in a March head-on crash that killed one person. Jorge Ortega-Ortega, 28, was charged out of Buena Vista County with homicide by vehicle – reckless driving, a class C felony. According to court documents, Ortega-Ortega was driving on west on Highway 3 around 6:25 a.m. on March 19. He was about a half mile east of the M-27 intersection, about nine miles east of Cherokee, when he turned on his left signal and moved into the eastbound lane while still driving west, even driving past a 'No Passing' sign. Documents state Ortega-Ortega stayed in the eastbound lane for about a mile before a head-on crash with an eastbound vehicle. The other driver, Roseannabelle Bumsted, 65, of Nemaha, died as a result of the injuries from the crash. Former Iowa teacher pleads guilty to sexually exploiting student Video from Ortega-Ortega's car allegedly showed him 'failing to maintain the proper lane of travel, crossing the center line, as well as the fog line on several occasions, and driving for an extended period in the opposite lane of travel before causing the collision,' documents state.
