Best's Market Segment Report: AM Best Maintains Stable Outlook on Italy's Non-Life Insurance Segment

AMSTERDAM, May 28, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AM Best has maintained its stable outlook on Italy's non-life insurance segment. In its new Best's Market Segment Report, "Market Segment Outlook: Italy Non-Life Insurance", AM Best states that natural catastrophe risks are gaining relevance due to the laws requiring corporate entities to buy coverage against earthquakes, floods, inundations and landslides that came into force for large enterprises on March 31, 2025. The report also notes that insurers face new challenges stemming from recent regulatory updates regarding bodily injury compensation and non-pecuniary damage, as well as a major revision to introduce a new unified table to standardise parameters and criteria across regions. Nevertheless, AM Best believes that the segment will be able to put in place additional rate increases to mitigate these impacts and maintain its profitability. Best's Market Segment Report: AM Best Maintains Negative Outlook on Italy's Life Insurance Segment

AMSTERDAM, May 28, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AM Best is maintaining its negative outlook on Italy's life insurance segment. In its new Best's Market Segment Report, "Market Segment Outlook: Italy Life Insurance", AM Best notes that while it expects premium growth momentum to continue in 2025, insurers in Italy are still facing elevated levels of surrenders which failed to scale down as hoped. These surrenders continue to exert pressure on net flows, especially with regards to capital-light products. The report also states that the Italian life insurance segment continues to exhibit an elevated level of concentration, by players and distribution channels. With roughly half of total life premiums written by three companies and distributed through bancassurance channels, these characteristics act as barriers to entry for new companies and prevent smaller participants from gaining market share. Best's Market Segment Report: AM Best Maintains Stable Outlook on Spain's Non-Life Insurance Segment

AMSTERDAM, May 23, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AM Best has maintained its stable outlook on Spain's non-life insurance segment. In its new Best's Market Segment Report, "Market Segment Outlook: Spain Non-Life Insurance", AM Best notes that catastrophic risks gained prominence following the 2024 flash flooding in Valencia, which showcased the relevance of insurance coverage and the role of the government-mandated Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros (Consorcio) natural catastrophe scheme. The report also notes that while AM Best expects the health insurance segment to grow in 2025, driven by premium rate increases as well as by growth in the number of insureds, motor insurance continues to be one of the most challenged segments with car registrations not yet recovered to pre-pandemic levels. Best's Market Segment Report: P&I Clubs Record High Free Reserves Despite Challenges on Technical Performance

AMSTERDAM, February 18, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--After two years of relatively benign pool claims experience, an uptick in pool claims in 2024/25 will partially offset expected high investment returns for Protection and Indemnity (P&I) clubs, according to a new report from AM Best. In its new Best's Market Segment Report, "P&I Clubs: Record High Free Reserves Despite Challenges on Technical Performance" AM Best notes that high investment returns boosted free reserves to record high levels in 2023/24 and are expected to remain sizeable in 2024/25. However, the uptick in pool claims means that combined technical performance is expected to deteriorate for the 2024/25 year. The report also notes that further rate adjustments are expected at subsequent renewals to maintain underwriting discipline. AM Best considers the continuation of general increases to be necessary to maintain price adequacy in view of the expected deterioration in underwriting results in 2024/25 due to the notable increase in large claims frequency and severity.
