North East students embrace community service during Giving Back Day
Students in the North East school district spent the day out of the classroom doing community service. It was all part of their Giving Back Day. North East building that stood for over 125 years torn down Students got their hands dirty, planting flowers on campus and painting murals in Herd and Gibson Parks. They also raked and weeded out the memorial garden area at the Mellon Veteran Outreach Center. Annual Equipment Day returns to Erie Zoo this weekend 'Some of my family actually serves too. It means a lot that we're helping and taking time out of class time to really help with stuff like this,' said Latrel Centner, an 8th grader. 'I'd much rather help out the community clean up the community than just do paperwork,' said Joseph Long, an 8th grader. Man accused of setting fire to home in Independence Township
A man from Beaver County is facing charges and accused of intentionally setting fire to a home in Independence Township early Thursday morning. State Police say Joseph Long of Aliquippa was responsible for starting a fire along Ranch Street while two people were sleeping inside the home. The home and all its contents were completely destroyed, according to State Police. Pennsylvania State Police say a man is charged with setting fire to a home along Ranch Street in Independence Township, Beaver County on Thursday morning. KDKA Photojournalist Brian Smithmyer Troopers say Long left the area after setting the fire and the two people who were inside the home were able to get out and suffered minor injuries. He was taken into custody not far from the home, troopers said. Long is being charged with criminal mischief and reckless endangerment.
