Phillies acquire LHP Josh Walker from Blue Jays
May 30 - Left-hander Josh Walker, designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday, was acquired by the Philadelphia Phillies in a cash deal on Thursday. Philadelphia optioned Walker to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Walker, 30, made three relief appearances for Toronto earlier this season, receiving no decisions while allowing four runs in five innings. Walker also had major league stints with the New York Mets each of the past two years. He went 0-1 with a 8.10 ERA in 14 outings (10 innings) in 2023, then finished 0-0 with a 5.11 ERA in 10 appearances (12 1/3 innings) in 2024. Overall, in 27 major league outings, Walker is 0-1 with a 6.59 ERA. He has 31 strikeouts and 14 walks in 27 1/3 innings. --Field Level Media

Chris Sale became the fastest pitcher to reach 2,500 strikeouts, pitched six scoreless innings and the Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 9-3 on Thursday night to split a doubleheader. The Phillies won the afternoon game 5-4. Sale (3-3) struck out Edmundo Sosa in the sixth inning for his eighth strikeout, to reach the milestone. He did it in 2,026 innings, surpassing the record of 2,107 2/3 set by Randy Johnson. Sale became the 40th pitcher in major league history to reach 2.500 strikeouts and joined Clayton Kershaw, Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer as the only active pitchers to have reached that plateau. Sosa was the last hitter Sale faced. He allowed just two hits in six shutout innings. Austin Riley had a double, a homer, and four RBIs, Ozzie Albies homered and drove in three, and Luke Williams had a pair of RBIs for the Braves, who snapped a three-game losing skid. Zack Wheeler (6-2) allowed six runs in 5 1/3 innings for the Phillies, who lost for just the second time in their last 13 games. After the game, the Phillies acquired left-hander Josh Walker from Toronto for cash considerations. Walker goes on the Phillies' 40-man roster, but will be assigned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. In a corresponding move, the Jays placed Tyler Heineman on the seven-day injured list due to a concussion, retroactive to Friday. Toronto signed Sánchez to a minor-league contract in December and assigned him to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. Sánchez spent the 2024 season with the Miami Marlins, playing 31 games in the majors. Blue Jays place backup catcher Tyler Heineman on 7-day IL, call up Ali Sanchez
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays had to shake up their roster before Sunday's series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays. Backup catcher Tyler Heineman was placed on the seven-day injured list after reporting concussion symptoms on Saturday. They called up Ali Sanchez from Triple-A Buffalo and had him in the lineup catching Chris Bassitt on Sunday. Advertisement In 2024, Sánchez had 96 plate appearances with the Marlins but struggled at the plate, batting just .167 with five runs and four RBIs. Heineman took a few foul balls off his catcher's mask in a game against the San Diego Padres on Thursday. His seven-day concussion IL stint is retroactive to May 23. Heineman is batting .396 with 10 runs, six RBIs and a homer in 48 at-bats. The Blue Jays also designated left-handed pitcher Josh Walker for assignment. Walker appeared in only three games this season, pitching five innings with a 7.20 ERA, eight strikeouts and two walks.
