Man City signs left back Aït-Nouri from Wolves ahead of Club World Cup
MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester City signed Algeria left back Rayan Aït-Nouri from Wolverhampton for a reported fee of 37 million euros ($42 million) on Monday. City has been deploying center backs Nathan Ake and, more recently, Josko Gvardiol at left back in recent seasons but now has a specialist option in Aït-Nouri, who is a very attacking full back. The 23-year-old Aït-Nouri joined Wolves from French team Angers in 2020. His contract at City runs to 2030 and he will be available for the new-look, 32-team Club World Cup, which starts on Saturday. City is in the same group as Juventus, Al Ain and Wydad Casablanca and its first match is on June 18. ___ AP soccer:

Man City expect to complete move for Wolves star Rayan Ait-Nouri BEFORE the Club World Cup as Pep Guardiola looks to bolster his defence
Manchester City expect to complete the signing of Rayan Ait-Nouri to bolster Pep Guardiola 's back line. Ait-Nouri, the Wolves left back, has been admired by scouts at City for over 12 months as they looked for reinforcements in that area of the pitch. The 23-year-old is now deemed to have enough Premier League experience under his belt to make the move following an impressive campaign at Molineux. Known for his buccaneering style, Ait-Nouri scored five goals in 41 appearances last season and registered another seven assists. The Algeria international has a year left on his Wolves contract – the club also possessing an option to extend that. But City, who fly out to the United States for the Club World Cup on June 12, are hoping to get a deal done sooner rather than later. The decision to prioritise Ait-Nouri indicates that Josko Gvardiol will now move permanently into the centre of defence. Gvardiol has spent much of his first 18 months at the Etihad Stadium on the left-hand side before striking up a formidable partnership with Ruben Dias in the middle. Academy graduate Nico O'Reilly shone in that position despite coming through as a midfielder, with City mindful they needed long-term solutions at full back this summer.

Man City pursuing deal to sign Rayan Ait Nouri from Wolves
Manchester City are pursuing a deal to sign Rayan Ait Nouri from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Agreements still need to be reached between the clubs and with the 23-year-old — however all parties now expect a move to happen. Ait Nouri has emerged as City's top target to strengthen at left-back after four impressive seasons since joining Wolves on a permanent basis, which followed a loan spell, from Angers. Advertisement Pep Guardiola's side are working to secure the Algeria international and further recruits before the Club World Cup in the United States this summer. Premier League clubs voted to approve allowing the window to open on June 1 before closing on June 10, with the tournament kicking off four days later. City face Wydad AC, Al Ain and Juventus in Group G of the newly-expanded competition. Ait Nouri has made 157 appearances for Wolves since joining the Midlands club, initially on loan, in 2020. He made 41 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring five goals and adding seven assists. Central defender Josko Gvardiol was City's most regular left-back before academy graduate midfielder Nico O'Reilly starred in the position over the final months of the campaign. ()

Pick your Man City player of the season
We asked our Manchester City fan contributor for their four candidates for player of the season and you can now select your top one. Josko Gvardiol Starring in a position that has been problematic for Manchester City for many seasons, Gvardiol has been crucial defensively and offensively. The only player not to succumb to successive fitness problems, offering versatility in the centre of defence when required. A star for the present and future, an ever-dependable rock at the back. Advertisement Mateo Kovacic Came under plenty of criticism when handed the impossible task of replacing Rodri, but grew into the role alongside a defensive midfield partner, providing necessary legs and energy to keep an ageing City side alive. A transitional mastermind, carrying the team forward and popping up with goals at vital moments during the run-in. Jeremy Doku Nicknamed 'The Finisher' within the club and supporters, Doku has exemplified the future of Pep Guardiola's side. Direct, unstoppable, lightning-quick - and now with an eye for a final pass and shot - the Belgian is coming into a world of his own. When needing the spark to close out a game, run at tired legs, add dynamism to stale and slow processes, the 22-year-old brings all of that in abundance. Advertisement Erling Haaland We have said it time and time again since his arrival in 2022, but where on earth would Manchester City be without Haaland this season?! 34 goal contributions to his name in a season that has also seen him miss several weeks through injury, more than double the next highest provider. A supposedly underperforming Haaland this season, a man battling his own exceptional standards in front of goal. Honourable mentions There are a few to note, unfortunately those who cannot be considered having largely not featured for the duration of the entire campaign, or perhaps don't stack up against the likes of those listed above above. Advertisement Ederson has come on leaps and bounds in his own game this season, improving his shot-stopping and offering magic moments with his ball distribution that is largely unrivalled within the game. Ruben Dias' excellence and importance has also shone through in our defensive vulnerability at times when he has not played. James McAtee, Nico O'Reilly and Matheus Nunes have also been important in their own right, and Omar Marmoush was exactly the sort of player we were crying out for in the January transfer market.
