Joveljic scores 2 goals, Pulskamp has 8 saves to help Sporting Kansas City beat Dynamo 3-1

HOUSTON -- Dejan Joveljic scored two goals, 22-year-old rookie Santiago Muñóz added his first goal in MLS and Sporting Kansas City beat Houston 3-1 on Saturday night to snap the Dynamo's four-game unbeaten streak. John Pulskamp had eight saves for Kansas City, which is unbeaten in the last four matches under interim head coach Kerry Zavagnin. Joveljic calmly rolled a left-footer from the center of the area into the net in the third minute of first half stoppage time to make it 1-1 and scored on volley — off a shot by Jansen Miller that ricocheted off the crossbar — to give Kansas City (4-8-4) a 2-1 lead in the 52nd minute. Sebastian Kowalczyk for Houston (5-7-5) to open the scoring in the 13th minute. Muñóz replaced Joveljic in the 79th minute and capped the scoring when he flicked a first-touch shot off a cross played by Dániel Sallói into the net in the 88th. The Dynamo had 55% possession and outshot Kansas City 22-12.

Galaxy seek first win of the season, face Sporting KC

Two proud franchises are struggling to gain traction in the 2025 MLS season, and they'll line up Sunday evening to see if they can do that against each other. The LA Galaxy (0-7-3, 3 points) will travel to Sporting Kansas City (2-7-1, 7 points) still looking for their first win of the 2025 season. The Galaxy are one of two winless teams in the league. The other is CF Montreal. The defending MLS champions matched their season-high with two goals in their most recent match, a 4-2 loss to the Portland Timbers. After falling behind Portland 3-0, the Galaxy used Christian Ramirez's team-leading fifth goal to get within two goals. Ramirez headed a cross from Joseph Paintsil in the 67th minute. Ramirez then fed Marco Reus, who finished into the lower corner of the goal to bring Los Angeles within one goal two minutes later. However, Portland iced the victory with a goal in the 76th minute. Head coach Greg Vanney has not lost faith in his club. "I trust the guys, and I like them," Vanney said. "I feel like we have some good moments and some good stretches and then we are a little shaky and we sometimes create our own issues. We've got to keep working and find the solutions inside of our group to help us turn the results around." Sporting KC will be hoping forward Dejan Joveljic continues his hot streak on his home pitch going against his former club. All five of Joveljic's goals for Sporting have come at Children's Mercy Park. He had a similar stretch with the Galaxy, and he now has 12 goals in his last 10 home appearances in MLS play with both clubs. Joveljic spent four seasons with the LA Galaxy, scoring 45 goals and 18 assists; he led the Galaxy to the 2024 MLS Cup title, including scoring the winning goal against the New York Red Bulls in the final. He was acquired by Sporting KC in the offseason. "It's going to be special, but I want nothing more than to win," Joveljic said. SKC interim coach Kerry Zavagnin knows it won't be easy to keep the Galaxy down. "Any time you play LA, you have to respect them," he said. "They have great players, and a lot of those players lifted a trophy not long ago. They know how to win and they're well-coached. Any time you play a team of that stature, it's a big occasion." Sporting KC beats St. Louis City 2-0, ends record skid in debut of interim manager Kerry Zavagnin

Associated Press KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Dejan Joveljic scored twice in the second half to help Sporting Kansas City end a club-record 13-match winless streak across all competitions with a 2-0 victory over St. Louis City at Children's Mercy Park on Saturday night, winning in the debut of interim manager Kerry Zavagnin. Neither team scored until Joveljic used assists from Manu Garcia and Nemanja Radoja to find the net in the 71st minute. Joveljic added some insurance when he scored unassisted off a carom in the 88th. It was his fourth goal in his first season with Sporting KC (1-5-1) after scoring 19 times for the MLS Cup-champion Los Angeles Galaxy last season. It was Garcia's second assist in his seventh career appearance and the first of the season for Radoja, who had seven in his first two seasons with the club. John Pulskamp had four saves in his first clean sheet this season for Sporting KC. He has seven shutouts in 35 career starts with the club. Ben Lundt saved three shots for St. Louis City (2-3-2) in his seventh career start. It was the 1,100th match in club history for Sporting KC and the first under Zavagnin, who played for the team from 2000-08 before becoming an assistant coach from 2009-2025. Peter Vermes was let go as the longest tenured manager in the league after 17 seasons. St. Louis City conceded as many goals as it had through the first six matches in the loss. The club had clean sheets in its first four matches but has now lost three straight by 1-0 scores and gone scoreless for 345 minutes under first-year manager Olof Mellberg. Sporting KC ended a six-match streak of allowing multiple goals in winning for the first time since September, while improving to 6-0-1 all time on April 5. St. Louis City will host the Columbus Crew on Sunday. Sporting KC hosts the Portland Timbers on Sunday. ___ AP soccer: recommended
