Jamie Redknapp delivers damning verdict on Arsenal's glaring weakness as alarming statistic emerges after 2-1 defeat by Bournemouth

Jamie Redknapp identified Arsenal 's alarming statistical weakness after the Gunners' suffered a 2-1 defeat by Bournemouth on Saturday. Mikel Arteta 's side threw away a lead at the Emirates after Declan Rice opened the scoring in the first half. Dean Huijsen equalised for the visitors after 67 minutes minutes before Evanilson bundled the ball home following a corner eight minutes later. The defeat puts Arsenal's spot in second place under serious jeopardy, with Manchester City looming three points behind. Not to mention, if Newcastle are able to beat Brighton on Sunday, the Magpies will trail the north London club by just two points. There is every chance Arsenal get dragged into a race for Champions League football in the final few games of the season, as they still have Liverpool and Newcastle to play. In the aftermath of Sunday's result, Redknapp noted where Arsenal's defence have let them down this season. Despite conceding the fewest in the Premier League (31), Arsenal have allowed the greatest percentage of goals from set-pieces. '48 per cent on their goals have been conceded from set-pieces.,' Redknapp noted. 'We all talk about Arsenal as being magnificent at offensive set-pieces, the detail they go into. They need to work harder on this [defensive set-pieces]. 'There's certain things that can stop you from winning a title and this can be one of them.' Redknapp went on to single out Arsenal's infamous set-piece coach, Nicolas Jover. The 43-year-old has attracted plenty of attention since arriving at the club in 2021 due to his tendency to stand in the technical area and give animated instructions during dead-ball situations. Arsenal have become a feared team from set-pieces with Jover helping from the touchline, but his behaviour has not gone down well with everyone. Back in December, Gary Neville branded Jover 'the most annoying bloke in football' after become irritated by the coach's antics. Redknapp added: 'The set-piece coach gets a lot of plaudits for what he does when they score goals. I don't know his impact on defensive ones but I can only imagine he does the same for them but they are definitely not good enough.' However, Redknapp extended some leniency to Arsenal, whose main man in attacking and defensive set-pieces - Gabriel - is out injured for the rest of the reason. 'In fairness, they missed Gabriel,' he said. 'He's a massive player in terms of set-pieces because he's a leader, he heads it. But they didn't deal with the set-piece that cost them the match today very well.' Arsenal next travel to the Parc des Princes where they face PSG in the second-leg of their Champions League semi-final clash. The Gunners trail the French champions 1-0 after a lacklustre performance at home in the opening leg of the tie.

Fans think ‘cracks are showing' between Mikel Arteta and Nicolas Jover after tense moment during Arsenal vs PSG

Fans have been reacting on social media after a moment between Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and set-piece coach Nicolas Jover went viral. On Tuesday night, the Gunners welcomed French giants Paris Saint Germain to the Emirates Stadium for the first leg of their Champions League semi-final tie. During what was a tense affair, Ousmane Dembele's goal in the 4th minute sealed a narrow 1-0 victory for the visitors. Towards the end of the match, a moment between Arteta and Jover went viral. As reported by Football London, after a decision went against the hosts, Jover was seen trying to have words with the fourth official but was quickly pushed away by Arteta. Jover was angered by referee Slavko Vincic's decision to award a free-kick to PSG after an apparent foul on goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Reacting on social media, one fan said: "Hmm, first, they briefed the press that Jover told Rice not to score the freekick against Madrid, and now Arteta has publicly humiliated him in front of hundreds of millions of people. Cracks showing." Another tweeted: "Arteta sent Jover back to the bench." A third fan added: "SET PIECE COACH STINKER AND SENT TO THE BENCH." Someone else wrote: "Arteta pushing Jover to sit down after the free kick was the highlight of my night." A fifth commented: "Arteta pushing Jover away. Get that brother off my screen forever trying to be the main character too much get to the back."Reflecting on his side's first-leg defeat, Arteta said after the match: "It's just half-time, I said exactly the same message after beating Real Madrid 3-0 at home. "We go to Paris to win, and I fully believe that we can do it." This weekend, Arsenal will be back in Premier League action when they take on Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon. After that, they will look to overturn the 1-0 deficit against PSG at the Parc des Princes.

Mikel Arteta orders Arsenal's raging set-piece coach back to the bench during disappointing defeat by PSG

Mikel Arteta had to step in to calm down his set-piece coach in the closing stages of Arsenal 's 1-0 defeat by PSG on Tuesday night. Appearing in their first Champions League semi-final in 16 years, Arsenal fell behind early on to an Ousmane Dembele strike, but tried to work their way back into the contest and thought they had equalised early in the second half when Mikel Merino headed home Declan Rice 's free-kick. However, after a three-minute VAR review, Merino was adjudged to be offside and the goal was chalked off. The Gunners kept pushing for an equaliser, with set-pieces looking to be one of their best chances of finding it, but Merino fouled goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from a corner in stoppage time to ease the pressure on PSG. Arsenal's set-piece coach Nicolas Jover was furious with the decision to penalise Merino and started venting his frustration at the fourth official. He was seen gesticulating on the touchline, and Arteta had to quickly step in to prevent him from getting into trouble as he had a stern word with Jover before pushing him back to the bench. The final whistle went just seconds later, with Arsenal now facing an uphill task to reach their first Champions League final since 2006. Back in December, Gary Neville branded Jover 'the most annoying bloke in football' after become irritated by the coach's antics. His remark came during a watchalong when Arsenal beat Manchester United 2-0 at the Emirates, with both of the Gunners' goals coming from corners. Jamie Carragher also took aim at Jover last week when Arsenal conceded from a corner in their 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace. The former Liverpool defender highlighted after the game that Arsenal have conceded the second highest percentage of goals from corners in the top flight this season as he joked that Jover may need replacing. 'In terms of percentage, only Man United are worse than Arsenal set piece-wise this season. So when we make a big deal about the set-piece coach... he's absolutely out of this world in terms of going forward, but they've got a big problem defensively. 'So should we be cutting his wages in half? Do they need a defensive set-piece coach? 'It's been one of the stories of the season and rightly so. It's unbelievable. You feel like they are going to score a goal from a set-piece in every game, or come very close to scoring. 'Of course he's had a huge impact but it is funny that they are having huge problems themselves.'
