Driver, 15, leads Sonoma County deputies on 100 mph chase on Highway 101
(KRON) — A 15-year-old juvenile, who is not yet old enough to earn a driver's license, led Sonoma County Sheriff's Office deputies on a 100-miles-per-hour chase in a stolen pickup truck late Thursday night. Deputies chased the young driver for 16 miles without knowing that a minor was behind the wheel, SCSO said. During the chase, one deputy's patrol car crashed into another motorist. The chase began at 10:43 p.m. when a deputy spotted a stolen black Chevrolet Silverado traveling on Highway 101 near Baker Avenue. 'A high-speed pursuit ensued, with the Silverado reaching speeds between 30 and 100 mph. Deputies did not know the driver's identity. Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety officers and Petaluma Police assisted by deploying spike strips. The strips successfully deflated the truck's tires, forcing it to slow and come to a stop in Petaluma,' Sheriff's Sgt. Juan Valencia wrote. Deputies conducted a high-risk stop and took the teenager to Sonoma County Juvenile Hall. The young driver, who has a criminal record in a previous stolen vehicle case, was booked on suspicion of felony evading, possessing a stolen vehicle, and probation violations. During the chase, a deputy had lights and sirens activated when the patrol car crashed with another vehicle on Highway 116 and Stony Point Road, the sheriff's office said. Young woman killed in East Bay CHP chase identified 'Both the deputy and the other driver were transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The California Highway Patrol is conducting an independent investigation into the collision,' Valencia wrote. 'Vehicle pursuits are inherently dangerous. We continually evaluate the public's safety in light of our duty to apprehend suspects,' Valencia wrote. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Santa Rosa gang members chased group in park with machetes: Deputies
(KRON) — A gang brawl erupted in Andy Lopez Unity Park on Moorland Avenue in Santa Rosa Tuesday evening, the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office said. Just after 7 p.m. a witness called 911 and told dispatchers that gang members were fighting in the park. 'The suspects, armed with machetes, were chasing a group of people,' sheriff's Sgt. Juan Valencia wrote. 'Before the arrival of deputies, the suspects fled the area in a blue Honda, which incoming deputies promptly found on Moorland Avenue. The deputies stopped and searched the car, which yielded two machetes and red gang paraphernalia,' Valencia wrote. Deputies arrested a 19-year-old Santa Rosa man, Rueben Cabrera, on suspicion of conspiracy and assault with a deadly weapon. Deputies also cited a 17-year-old passenger who was released to a family member. Both teenagers are gang members, according to SCSO. Cabrera was booked into the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility with bail set at $30,000. New details emerge after Santa Rosa students die from drug overdoses 'The safety of our community in Sonoma County is not just a top priority but a commitment that we, the Sheriff's Office, take seriously,' the sheriff's office wrote. Rare Tornado Carves Destructive Path Through Pico Rivera
A rare EF-0 tornado tore through a Pico Rivera neighborhood early Thursday morning, leaving a four-block trail of toppled trees, damaged power lines, and startled residents southeast of downtown National Weather Service confirmed the twister touched down around 3:15 a.m. in the El Rancho neighborhood, with winds reaching approximately 85 mph during its brief two-minute touchdown, according to NBCLA. NWS dispatched a survey team to the area to assess the damage pattern and officially classify the event."We'd been talking about the potential for tornados in this area for days in advance," said Ariel Cohen of the National Weather Service. "We had a line of intense showers that reformed over central and southern Los Angeles County. This activity exhibited some weak rotation with it."Morning light revealed the tornado's destructive path, including a massive tree that crashed near the intersection of Church and Underwood streets. Juan Valencia was jolted from sleep when the tree came down outside his family's home."I woke up to a big boom," Valencia said, describing how the tree fell directly onto their car, crushing the hood and shattering the damage assessment showed another tree ripped from the ground and leaning precariously against a house roof, while a third appeared split at its trunk. Despite the property damage, no injuries were reported in the tornado coincided with an overnight storm that brought steady rainfall and strong winds across L.A. County. The increased precipitation rates prompted evacuation warnings in several burn zones, including neighborhoods near the Palisades and Eaton fires due to potential slides and debris tornados remain unusual in California, they're not unprecedented. In February, NWS confirmed a weak tornado damaged a mobile home park in Oxnard, while a more significant tornado struck Montebello in March 2023. Perhaps most memorably, a powerful 1983 tornado with winds between 113 and 157 mph caused extensive damage in areas south of downtown L.A., including partially removing the roof of the L.A. Convention noted that certain areas of L.A. County are particularly susceptible to these weather events. "There is a local maximum of tornado frequencies across the L.A. basin, especially areas between Downey, Montebello, Compton, Carson areas, East Los Angeles," he explained. "That entire area has a very localized, meteorologically prime set of ingredients that can support the development of weak small tornados. We actually have seen them occur with actual frequencies that rival some portions of the Midwest."While Thursday's storm is expected to move eastward, forecasters predict continued showers and possible thunderstorms throughout the day across L.A. County. Get the latest news delivered to your inbox daily! Sign up for Los Angeles Magazine's The Daily Brief below or click here.
