Shriya Pilgaonkar steps into uniform with empathy for ‘Chhal Kapat The Deception'
Actress Shriya Pilgaonkar has stepped into the role of a determined police officer in the gripping drama Chhal Kapat The Deception, which premiered on ZEE5 on June 6. To bring authenticity to her character Devika, Shriya undertook an immersive experience in Lucknow, interacting with female police officers, including ADG Padmaja Chauhan, and learning about the innovative women's safety helpline, 1090. Calling her visit to the city 'an eye-opener,' Shriya shared, 'Lucknow has such a timeless charm. I've always loved its culture, warmth, and food. But what truly moved me was meeting the incredible women police officers and learning about the 1090 helpline. It's not just a call centre—it's a lifeline for women across Uttar Pradesh.' The actress expressed admiration for the scale and sensitivity of the helpline's operations, adding, 'The way these officers respond—with empathy, urgency, and resolve—left a lasting impact on me.' Speaking about how the experience shaped her portrayal of Devika, she said, 'Devika isn't just a cop—she's a woman carrying her own pain while standing against injustice. This experience gave me a deeper understanding of her strength and vulnerability. I hope viewers connect with her emotional truth.' Set in a village near Burhanpur, Chhal Kapat The Deception unfolds around the mysterious death of a rising social media influencer at a friend's wedding. Directed by Ajay Bhuyan and produced by Juggernaut Production, the series also features Kamya Ahlawat, Ragini Dwivedi, Tuhina Das, Yahhve Sharma, Pranay Pachauri, Smaran Sahu, and Anuj Sachdeva in key roles. The series blends suspense with social commentary, anchored by Shriya's compelling performance shaped by real-life heroes in uniform.

Shaurya director Samar Khan says hero-worshipping Kay Kay Menon's character is like saying Gabbar from Sholay is my hero
Filmmaker Samar Khan has made web series such as The Test Case, Avrodh, and the upcoming murder mystery Chhal Kapat. But, as a director, he is best known for his 2008 film, Shaurya. A Hindi adaptation of the Tom Cruise-Jack Nicholson classic A Few Good Men, Shaurya starred Rahul Bose, Kay Kay Menon, Minissha Lamba, Deepak Dobriyal, and Jaaved Jaaferi. Just like A Few Good Men's iconic 'You can't handle the truth' monologue, Shaurya also had an important scene in the climax where Kay Kay's Brigadier Rudra Pratap Singh admits to abuse of power, assuming that his righteous position would grant him immunity. While the scene is meant to impugn the character, over the last few years, part of the monologue has been shared online with posters sympathising with Kay Kay Menon's character instead. In a chat with HT, Samar opens up on the phenomenon. "I have outgrown Shaurya many years ago," he says, adding, I am still very proud of the film. What people make out of it is not something in my control. So, I don't react to it. People ask me on Twitter all the time and on other forums, but I don't react to it because it's not for me to do that. If I say something, it will be taken one way or the other." The filmmaker adds that the scene has gone viral for the wrong reasons, as villains are more attractive to the general audience. "Unfortunately, the people who watch that scene have not watched the scene before or after it. It's like taking Gabbar Singh out of context in Sholay and saying he is my hero. That is unfortunate. In the way we live, villains are far more attractive. No matter how many DDLJs Shah Rukh does, he is still known for Baazigar and Darr. That is something beyond our control. We, as creators, have to detach from it and not feel happy or sad about it," he says. Samar Khan also adds that the viral clips are emblematic of social media's short attention span. "That gives people their views and clickbait," he adds. The filmmaker is now coming out with a murder mystery series titled Chhal Kapat. Directed by Ajay Bhuyan, produced by Juggernaut Production, Chhal Kapat - the Deception is premiering on ZEE5 on June 6. The show stars Shriya Pilgaonkar in the lead, alongside Kamya Ahlawat, Ragini Dwivedi, Tuhina Das, Yahhve Sharma, Pranay Pachauri, Smaran Sahu, and Anuj Sachdeva.

Shriya Pilgaonkar opens up on playing cop in Chhal Kapat: 'Society views female cops differently due to sexist biases'
She has played everything from a girl next door to an ambitious lawyer, but Chhal Kapat sees Shriya Pilgaonkar don the police uniform for the first time. The new murder mystery series on Zee5 has Shriya as a police officer investigating a murder in a small town. Ahead of the show's release, Shriya speaks with HT about her portrayal and the society's general perception of female police officers. (Also read: Shriya Pilgaonkar on Delhi's air pollution: 'I'm concerned how it is going to worsen in the times to come') For long, the depiction of women in uniform has been rather masculine in Hindi cinema. This can be best exemplified by the fact that the highest-grossing Hindi film with a female cop in the lead is titled Mardaani (Masculine). Talking about the necessity of making women in uniform masculine on screen, Shriya says, "Society looks at a male cop and a female cop differently because of their own inherent sexist biases. It is almost a defence mechanism that causes a woman to take up space, and it's because of years of conditioning." However, the actor says that Chhal Kapat, her new show, does not tread this path. "Here, what I like is that we have kept Devika's femininity," she says elaborating, "She doesn't have to be super aggressive while interrogating someone. She is ok to be gentle. But she will be tough, too. I like that there is no aggression for the sake of it. But yes, women in spaces where men have historically taken up more space tend to hold on to that and stay in power much more." Directed by Ajay Bhuyan, produced by Juggernaut Production, Chhal Kapat - The Deception is set to premiere on ZEE5 on June 6, 2025. The show also stars Kamya Ahlawat, Ragini Dwivedi, Tuhina Das, Yahhve Sharma, Pranay Pachauri, Smaran Sahu, and Anuj Sachdeva.
