ICE arrests 12 in Nantucket, Massachusetts; lawmaker slams 'shameful' political move
Several people were deported from Nantucket, Massachusetts, on Tuesday as part of an US immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) operation on the island. In a post on X, the department of homeland security said, 'ICE is removing illegal aliens from ALL states, communities, and worksites across this country.' There was also a video that showed several people in life vests sitting on a US coast guard boat along with officers wearing what appeared to be bulletproof vests. The arrests come at a time when the Trump administration's nationwide deportation efforts are facing major legal challenges. According to The Nantucket Current, at least 12 individuals were detained and removed from the island on Tuesday afternoon. Local reports indicated ICE also made arrests on Martha's Vineyard — another Massachusetts island known for its seasonal population of workers and tourists. Massachusetts state senator Julian Cyr, a Democrat representing Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, and parts of Cape Cod, criticised the operation. 'It's sad and it's shameful to see the immigrants who make our communities function, particularly in these most busy summer months, be targeted, harassed, and in some cases, forcibly removed from their families and lives just for a political agenda.' The move is similar to a 2022 incident when Florida governor Ron DeSantis sent a plane with dozens of migrants to Martha's Vineyard without notice, adding to the political debate over immigration.

Off the Menu: Convenience stores challenge fast food with expanded menus
Buffeted by lockdowns, labor shortages, supply chain problems and escalating costs, the past five years have not been particularly kind to major fast-food brands. Many of the quick-service restaurant giants such as McDonald's, Starbucks and KFC have experienced declines in customer traffic and, especially over the last six months, have watched their profit margins be impacted as a result. Consumers, especially those from lower-income demographics, seem to have lost the sense that fast food represented 'good value.' Apart from cost pressures and value perceptions, the quick service segment of the restaurant industry is also having to cope with quiet competition from another type of business - the convenience store Of course, convenience stores have long sold ready-to-eat foods in the form of packaged sandwiches, soft drinks and roller-grilled hot dogs. But since the pandemic that industry has gotten serious about food service, with modern 'C-store' layouts devoting space to a veritable food court of tasty options. The convenience store industry, faced with declining gasoline sales thanks to the growing popularity of electric vehicles, has latched onto ready-to-eat food as the growth opportunity to pursue. Food service sales convenience stores currently represents about 30% of total stores sales and contribute generously to the bottom line. In contrast, just two decades ago food service sales were only about 12% of the industry's total take at the cash register. Unlike the quick service restaurant sector, convenience stores have continued to rack up year-over-year sales and customer count increases, most recently reporting a 2.4% growth in sales for 2024. That's a result any fast-food eatery would be glad to report. ********** Side Dishes In celebration of National Burger Month, on April 28 Red Robin Gourmet Burgers & Brews will be introducing several items to its menu. A new Backyard BBQ Pork Burger will get its flavor profile from a topping of hickory-smoked pulled pork, barbecue sauce and hardwood-smoked bacon. Garnishes for the new burger include cheddar cheese, onion straws and more; a 'bottomless' side will also be included. Backyard BBQ Pork Nachos will feature Red Robin's signature Yukon Chips topped with hickory-smoked pulled pork, a drizzle of beer cheese-bacon fondue, Whiskey River BBQ sauce and ranch dressing. Sliced jalapenos will serve as garnish. Three special beverages - a Peach-Berry Freckled Lemonade in both nonalcoholic and vodka-spiked versions and a Peaches & Cream Milkshake - are also making a month-long appearance. There are Red Robin locations at Holyoke Crossing in Holyoke, on Hazard Avenue in Enfield, and in Manchester, Conn. ********** Massachusetts State Sen. Julian Cyr, a Democrat whose district includes part of Cape Cod and the Islands, has renewed his quest to end the Massachusetts ban on restaurant 'happy hours.' As he did during the last Legislative session, Cyr is linking the existing happy hour ban to what he refers to as the Commonwealth's 'fun problem.' Cyr believes that lifting the ban on discount drinks would not only be good for the restaurant business but would also remedy what he sees as a socializing shortfall in the Bay State. He contends that bringing back happy hours would make life more enjoyable for younger people and could even help keep them from moving out of state. The current ban on happy hours dates back to 1984. Cyr's assertion is that things have changed since then, thanks to the deterrent effect of tougher drunk driving laws and the widespread availability of ride-for-hire services. When Cyr's proposal was last before the Legislature, the Massachusetts Restaurant Association, which lobbies on behalf of the industry, actively opposed an end to the happy hour ban. ********** All this week (until Sunday, April 27), the Friendly's Restaurant at 54-56 Main Street in Florence is holding a grand reopening celebration. Newly redecorated and under new ownership, the Florence location is marking the change with a full week of special deals. These limited-time items, along with several specialty cocktails, will be available through June 15. ********** As part of CEO Brian Niccol's program of returning Starbucks to its 'warm and comfortable' roots, the coffee chain is updating its employee dress code in a manner that's designed to emphasize the iconic green Starbucks apron. Starting May 12, Starbucks baristas and counter people will have to adhere to a defined color palette that will incorporate black, company-logo tee shirts; black, long-sleeved shirts; and pants in black, denim blue or khaki. The stated objective of the new dress code is to create a sense of familiarity across all of Starbucks's North America locations. Starbucks has also been re-engineering its operating procedures, recently announcing that it was working to shorten wait times. The new goal, according to company officials, is to fulfill drink orders, both in-store and drive-thru, in four minutes or less. To help meet this target the chain has been working to reduce the operational complexity in its stores by streamlining the drink menu and bringing in outside consultants to suggest fixes that will expedite the flow of orders. Cape Cod Lawmaker Fights 40-Year State Ban on Happy Hour Drinks
Massachusetts is one of only a handful of states that prohibits restaurants from offering happy hour drink specials to lure in customers. State Senator Julian Cyr is on a mission to change that. A Democrat whose district includes Cape Cod and Nantucket, Cyr earlier this year filed his third attempt to overturn Massachusetts ' more than 40-year-old ban on happy hours. The policy, he says, is outdated and undermines efforts to draw people back to downtowns diminished by the pandemic and the persistence of remote work.

State House Spotlight: Community advocates and addressing federal issues
BOSTON (WWLP) – This week at the State House in Boston, lawmakers split their time between budget matters and federal issues and hearing from advocates from their communities. Lawmakers came together early in the week to commemorate Transgender Day of Visibility, at a time when the presidential administration is targeting transgender people via executive orders. 'We are seeing a hateful effort to erase trans people from public life. These are coordinated and deliberated attacks,' said Provincetown Senator Julian Cyr. The state senate announced a targeted response plan to Trump's federal actions, called Response 2025, that tasks a pre-existing committee with speaking to other senators and putting forth bills. 'We know how to do this, we know how to get together, get the best ideas surfaced, move as quickly as we must do to meet the acute challenges of this time,' said Northampton Senator Jo Comerford. The committee in charge of response is already meant to speak with senators and pitch bills, but the Senate president says naming Trump as a priority will allow a faster and more targeted approach. On Thursday, youth advocates took to Beacon Hill to speak out against the influence of nicotine and tobacco on their communities. 'We all have power. No matter who we are, what we look like, or where we come from, we will always have the power of our voices, our minds, and of each other,' said Hopkinton High School senior Neha Ninan. Also this week, Governor Healey filed a $756 million supplemental budget meant to provide urgent relief to some state-sponsored services, like food access, housing, and child care. The supplemental budget will need to pass the House and Senate before being implemented, and it is expected to cost the state about $545 million. Transgender Day of Visibility at the State House
BOSTON (WWLP) – Lawmakers and advocates gathered in the State House's Nurses Hall to commemorate Transgender Day of Visibility and discuss statewide support for transgender people under increasing federal regulations. Since the beginning of President Trump's term in January, his administration has passed several major executive orders targeting transgender people, including recognizing people only as biological men or women, moving transgender women to men's prisons, defunding gender-affirming care, banning transgender girls in girls' sports and more. Northampton healthcare organization Transhealth accepting new pediatric patients One state senator, who identifies as gay, says these threats are crucial to talk about in order to overcome them. 'We are seeing a hateful effort to erase trans people from public life. These are coordinated and deliberated attacks,' said Provincetown's Senator Julian Cyr. The senate president and the lieutenant governor both made a promise to onlookers–anti-transgender legislation will not be permitted to pass in the Bay State. 'Here, we stand up to bigotry. We have no tolerance for it. We respect the ability of people to live their authentic lives,' said Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll. Lawmakers made it clear at the visibility event, that although transgender people make up less than 1% of the total population, transgender rights are crucial to uphold in Massachusetts.
