Facts on the Leverkusen match: Borussia and their comebacks away to Bayer
The scenario: Second versus fifth. Leverkusen's final placement is already set in stone. What still remains unclear is whether the Werkself will have the second or third best season in their history in terms of points. Everything between third and eighth place is still possible for BVB. The Black & Yellows have lost only three of their last 17 Bundesliga games in Leverkusen (seven wins, seven draws). Home/away: Bayer are second in the home table but have dropped points in six of their 16 matches at the BayArena to date (two defeats, four draws). Last season, the team remained unbeaten at their home stadium (14 victories and three stalemates). BVB might only be in 12th position in the away table but they have lost only one of their last five away games (in Leipzig). Advertisement Head-to-head record: The Black & Yellows have recorded more than twice as many Bundesliga wins in this pairing (11) as Bayer (five) over the last 10 years and have not failed to find the net in their last 16 matches against the Werkself (the last time was a 2-0 defeat in Leverkusen on 1 October 2016). Borussia Dortmund have not recorded more away wins after going 1-0 down against any other club than they have against Bayer (four) and have also drawn on six occasions. test Statistics: Leverkusen are unbeaten in seven league matches. Their last defeat to date was by a 2-0 scoreline against Bremen on 8 March. The Werkself have 68 points on the board and can still surpass their tally of 73 from the 1999/2000 season. Back then, Bayer Leverkusen achieved their second-best points tally in the Bundesliga; they have only racked up more points in the 2023/24 title-winning season (90). Borussia Dortmund are undefeated in six games and have won their last three matches – those are new season records for BVB. The last six matches have seen Borussia take 16 out of a possible 18 points, which is more than any other team, and they have also scored the most goals of any team in that time (19). Reverse fixture: All five potential centre-backs were missing for BVB. Almugera Kabar and Yannik Lührs made the starting line-up for the only time, while Julian Ryerson helped out in the centre. Leverkusen put themselves on the path to victory early on, converting their first three shots at goal. Nathan Tella netted after only 25 seconds. BVB hit back while 2-0 and 3-1 down thanks to goals from Jamie Gittens and Serhou Guirassy but still succumbed to a 3-2 loss and suffered their first home defeat of the campaign. Advertisement Last season: On Matchday 13, BVB took the lead through Julian Ryerson in the fifth minute, then switched their focus to defence and passionately defended their narrow lead up until the 79th minute when Victor Boniface levelled the scores at 1-1. test Biggest away victory: Only two of the 12 Bundesliga away wins in Leverkusen have been by more than a solitary goal. The 3-1 victory on Matchday 18 of the 2010/2011 season – a milestone en route to claiming the league title – was followed by a 4-2 victory at the BayArena on 29 September 2018. After being 2-0 down at the break, Jacob Bruun Larsen (65), Marco Reus (69) and Paco Alcácer (85/90) turned the game around with their goals. Compiled by Boris Rupert

Dortmund crash Alonso farewell with 4-2 in Leverkusen; Frankfurt held
Dortmund's Julian Ryerson celebrates scoring his side's second goal during the German Bundesliga soccer match between Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund at BayArena. Marius Becker/dpa Borussia Dortmund spoilt the home farewell party for coach Xabi Alonso with a stunning 4-2 triumph at Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday to keep their Champions League ambitions alive. Julian Brandt, Julian Ryerson, Karim Adeyemi and Serhou Guirassy reversed Leverkusen's lead from Jeremie Frimpong for Dortmund's sixth victory from seven unbeaten games. Jonas Hofmann got a late second for Leverkusen who suffered their third season defeat, all at home. Advertisement Champions League possible Dortmund in fifth are all but certain to play in Europe next season, and one point behind Freiburg can still snatch fourth place for a Champions League berth on the final matchday Saturday. Freiburg close at home against third placed Eintracht Frankfurt and Dortmund take on relegated Holstein Kiel. Frankfurt were held 2-2 by St Pauli which means that Dortmund should move into the top four as long as they win by two goals, regardless of the outcome in Freiburg. "Today was very important. We had to suffer in the first half, were a little lucky and had an outstanding goalkeeper. We were then clinical after the break," Dortmund defender Waldemar Anton told streaming portal DAZN. Advertisement Brandt expressed hope that "we can end the season in the best possible way" after what he named "a rollercoaster" earlier in the campaign, where they had been 10 points off the top four just a few weeks ago. Alonso and Tah farewell Alonso, who famously led Leverkusen to a historic unbeaten Bundesliga title and the German Cup last season, was honoured by club bosses amid "Xabi, Xabi" chants from the fans, after confirming on Friday he would be leaving after the season, possibly for Real Madrid. He later also celebrated with defender Jonathan Tah, who is leaving after 10 years, in the stands with the diehards. Advertisement "His impact was huge, his aura. He is a top coach and a top person. We took a big step forward over the two and a half years," Tah said. Alonso said: "It is the end of a super era in my life. They (Leverkusen) gave me the chance to become a coach, They gave me trust and support. I am very proud and I will be forever thankful to Bayer." Leverkusen dominate but Dortmund hit back On the pitch, Leverkusen started determined to give Alonso a successful home send off and after several missed chances took the lead in the 31st when Frimpong fired into top left corner after a one-two with Florian Wirtz. Advertisement Dortmund levelled out of the blue from former Leverkusen player Brandt two minutes later, and completed the turnaround from Ryerson's low shot in the 43rd for 2-1. Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made a number of extraordinary saves, including against Wirtz and Amine Adli who then also headed against the crossbar shortly before half-time. Dortmund clinch it Second-placed Leverkusen were not as dominant after the break, and Dortmund decided the game for good when Adeyemi emphatically fired into the top corner in the 73rd, before Guirassy raised his season tally to 20 four minutes later with a low shot. Advertisement Hofmann's goal in stoppage time made the result a little less painful for the hosts. Frankfurt held by St Pauli and face CL berth final Frankfurt failed to secure their Champions League spot with the draw against St Pauli who are effectively safe, three points and 13 goals better than third last Heidenheim. Rasmus Kristensen gave Frankfurt a dream start 24 seconds into the game. Pauli reversed matters from Manolis Saliakas' looping ball into the far corner in the fourth and Morgan Guilavogui in the 16th but Michy Batshuayi drilled the equalizer in the 71st. Frankfurt are two points above Freiburg and three clear of Dortmund, and their goal difference is just three better than that of Dortmund who have scored three more. That means they could slip out of the top four with defeat and a Dortmund victory by two goals. Advertisement Stuttgart end home rot In the late game, VfB Stuttgart ended a run of six straight home defeats with a 4-0 victory over 10-man Augsburg in mid-table from Atakan Karazor in the eighth, Nick Woltemade in the 51st, Enzo Millot in the 80th and Ermedin Demirovic in the 87th. They are however sweating on the fitness of influential Angelo Stiller, who limped off two weeks before their Cup final after being fouled by Samuel Essende which resulted in a red card for the Augsburg player in the 12th minute. (Marius Becker/dpa via AP) BERLIN (AP) — Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso's last home game in charge ended in a 4-2 drubbing by Borussia Dortmund that boosted the visitors' chances of Champions League qualification on Sunday. Karim Adeyemi scored one goal and set up another for clinical Dortmund to stay one point behind fourth-placed Freiburg with one round of the Bundesliga remaining. Advertisement Dortmund next plays relegated Holstein Kiel, while Freiburg plays Eintracht Frankfurt in the final round. The top four teams qualify for Europe's premier club competition. Third-placed Frankfurt could clinch its place later Sunday with a win at home against St. Pauli, which was just two points above the relegation zone. Alonso, who confirmed on Friday he'll be leaving Leverkusen at the end of the season, was honored for his impact at the club before kickoff, when defender Jonathan Tah also received tributes before he leaves. Celebrating with Alonso Alonso's team dominated from the start with a host of chances only to be thwarted by Gregor Kobel in the Dortmund goal. Advertisement Florian Wirtz set up Jeremie Frimpong to break the deadlock in the 31st, when the Dutch wing back ran to Alonso, leading to a team celebration around the departing coach. But Julian Brandt replied two minutes later with Dortmund's first shot on goal after Adeyemi pulled the ball back. Kobel pulled off great saves to deny Nathan Tella and then Wirtz, before Pascal Groß set up Julian Ryerson to score with Dortmund's second shot before the break. Leverkusen missed more chances after it, before Brandt sent Adeyemi through to make it 3-1 in the 73rd. Serhou Guirassy made sure of the win four minutes later, before Wirtz set up Jonas Hofmann's consolation in stoppage time. Stuttgart hosted Augsburg later Sunday. ___ AP soccer:
