Julianne Nicholson Was ‘Paradise' Creator Dan Fogelman's Only Choice for His ‘Complicated' Villain

On June 5, the IndieWire Honors Spring 2025 ceremony will celebrate the creators and stars responsible for some of the most impressive and engaging work of this TV season. Curated and selected by IndieWire's editorial team, IndieWire Honors is a celebration of the creators, artisans, and performers behind television well worth toasting. We're showcasing their work with new interviews leading up to the Los Angeles event. Ahead, 'Paradise' creator Dan Fogelman explains why Julianne Nicholson, this season's IndieWire Honors Performance Award winner, was so worth the wait (and the white lies) it took to get her 'transcendent' work in the series. More from IndieWire Natasha Lyonne: The Maverick Behind the Madness 'Stick' Review: Owen Wilson's Golf Comedy Takes Too Many Shortcuts Trying to Be 'Ted Lasso' It's summer of 2024. We are shooting Episode 2 of my new [Hulu] series, 'Paradise.' While a lot of my mental energy has been devoted to the pilot, I'm equally focused on the second episode… an episode that expands our world and tells the backstory of our complicated 'villain' — Samantha Redmond, AKA Sinatra. I have come to set today — a rarity for me. Because today Julianne Nicholson is doing her big therapy scene — a monologue where she processes the loss of a child and her failed attempts to move forward — and I want to see it live. There are some things you just need to see in person. Julianne begins her monologue. The directors — knowing what's about to happen before it happens — have chosen to start on her and shoot the scene in one shot. No editing. Just let her go. And, so, the scene begins. I am standing in the back room, watching on the rear monitors. Julianne launches in. It is transcendent. And to no one, or maybe everyone, I simply say, 'Oh, my God.' And with that, as I'm inclined to do in many of my screenplays, I FLASHBACK. It's a year earlier now. I've been an admirer of Julianne's from a distance for years, and I've been obsessed with the idea of her as Sinatra from go. We've Zoomed, connected, and agreed to take this journey together. I'm so excited. And then I get a phone call… there's been a hiccup. Julianne has been filming another project, a project that still has time left to go, and their dates conflict with ours. They conflict in a way that makes shooting with her impossible. 'Dan,' I'm told, 'You're going to have to move on and cast someone else.' A decade of running TV shows has taught me to roll with the punches. A location falls apart, you change the location. An actor can't get their head around a speech, you change the words. But having Julianne in my show — in this part — and then losing her? I can't roll with that. There's a multiple week overlap between projects. I would have to push our project multiple weeks to accommodate Julianne's schedule. At a very late date. It would cost the show, and the studio that employs me, a LOT of money. I worry I'll never be able to convince anyone to push, not for one actor in an ensemble, no matter how great they are. And so… I lie. I tell everyone I need more time to prep the show (which I kind of do), and that we are rushing into production before we were ready (also a partial truth). But the real truth: we could shoot now. Just not with Julianne. And I don't want to shoot without Julianne. BACK TO PRESENT Julianne only needs two takes at the monologue. We will wind up using her first take in the show. It is one of the most extraordinary single pieces of acting I've ever witnessed — a broken woman, a mother who has lost a child, grasping at anything she can hold on to as she tries to survive for her remaining child. It's so raw, and so real… one of those performances where the lines blur between reality and art. You can hear a pin drop on stage. Everyone knows they are witnessing 'special.' I have a five-year-old. We're entering the 'not good to lie' portion of his development. But the white lie I told that allowed Julianne to play Sinatra is one of those few lies I'll be proud of for the rest of my life. She's a woman at the very top of her craft, who is kind and generous to boot. Working with Julianne Nicholson is, indeed, Paradise. Julianne Moore reveals dark reason shows like Sirens and White Lotus are made

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video As Julianne Moore stars in Netflix's new dark comedy Sirens, she poses that our fascination with the mega-rich is due to 'tremendous income inequality'. The new 'seductive' five-episode series follows three very different women – the lavishly rich philanthropist Michaela Kell (Julianne), her assistant and mentee Simone DeWitt (Milly Alcock) and Simone's sister Devon (Meghann Fahy), whose life is in a downward spiral. After Simone and Devon's father Bruce (Bill Camp) is diagnosed with early-onset dementia, Devon embarks on a journey to Michaela's luxury island to confront her absent sister and stumbles into a world with far more nefarious undertones. The Molly Smith-created series, also starring Kevin Bacon and Glenn Howerton, and has been sold as the 'incisive, sexy, and darkly funny exploration of women, power, and class'. The cult-like aesthetic and critique of the wealthy through the medium of dark comedy seems to be an increasingly explored area of TV, not least in the recent HBO phenomenon The White Lotus. And Julianne, 64, thinks she has put her finger on exactly why, as she tells Metro. 'We're living in a time of tremendous income inequality, and it's baffling to us. It's certainly not something that I grew up with. 'When I grew up as a kid in the US, it was that it felt like was possible to live a solid, middle-class life. There were a lot of us who had the same access to housing and education, and health care. 'I think recently, and it's happened globally too. There's been this great disparity where so few of the population has so much of the wealth. 'Rightly so, people are intrigued and baffled and confused about why there should be this vast separation. So I think that's why we have suddenly this plethora of shows that are investigating what this is [about],' the Hollywood actor explained. Her character, Michaela, is an animal activist married to old money tycoon Peter Kell (Kevin) who is 'not quite who she seems' when you first meet her. 'I was also really attracted the idea of playing someone whose identity and inner emotional life would slowly be revealed over the course of five episodes,' she explained. And her turbulent dynamic with Peter was made all the easier to flesh out thanks her and Kevin's historic working relationship after they both starred in Crazy Stupid Love. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'I was so delighted that he was going to do this, because when you work with someone you automatically… have shorthand, and it's easy for you to re-engage. 'He's a joy to be around. He's such a such a wonderful actor and a really, really wonderful person.' She added that it was 'interesting' to portray a couple at a 'precarious point in their relationship' which is not always something you come across. At the heart of this show, however, is the relationship between these three women who are pushing and pulling against one another in a bid to achieve their conflicting goals. And we especially see the unhealthily co-dependent relationship Michaela and Simone have forged during their time together. Julianne praised her House of the Dragon co-star as 'extraordinary' and someone who quickly mastered the American accent. For Milly, her experience working with Julianne proved invaluable and their dynamic in real-life naturally translated to the screen. Milly explained: 'I just used my own position of being a younger, less experienced actor who is enamored and inspired by this woman who's obviously very capable and has the career that I want, and is very talented. 'Then as their relationship changes and shifts, Julie is just such an open and accessible actor and person in general so I didn't feel that I had to reach, I felt that she was always there and she was always willing to play.' And was inspired to see the 'good standard' that Julianne set while filming. 'She was someone who just set a very good standard in always being a team player and always being there to play and to serve the story and not to be self-serving,' she reflected. This powerful atmosphere was only bolstered by the fact that not only was the show led by three nuanced female characters, but the crew was also filled to the brim with female talent. 'All of our directors [such as Nicole Cassell] were women. All of our first ADs were women. And it just made the process and environment of going to work every day something very different to what I was used to,' the 25-year-old screenstar said. 'I've been fortunate to work with a lot of female directors, but to work with like a fully female team in front and behind the camera, just made it such a welcoming environment. We could ask questions and things would change, or things would be incorporated, and they would listen.' She pointed to the pink megaphone Simone uses to boss everyone around with in the first episode which came about thanks to her suggestion. 'I went up to Molly, and I was like, 'I think it would be really funny if she didn't yell [but] she had a little pink megaphone.' Things like that… it was such a joy,' she recalled. As for her connection with her character, it was definitely 'the most different character [she's] played' from herself. 'You can be like: 'I don't really understand that set of circumstances but I understand the feeling of being outcasted and needing to prove and needing to perform and needing to be perfect.' So I could relate to that,' she said. One thing she couldn't relate to, however, was the sibling dynamic between Simone and Devon. 'Me and Meghann both don't have sisters so we would go talk to Molly like 'how do sisters behave with one another?' and we found it with each other. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'There's one scene at the end in episode five that was very, very difficult to shoot because I think it was mine and Meghann's last day together. We didn't have to act. We were both just so choked up about it,' she teased. Milly was not the only person who tried to bring a personal nuance to the script. Bill brought 'tremendous curiosity' and research when approaching Bruce's diagnosis. 'It's so individual as to how it manifests itself in that particular person. So I took what Molly had written and applied some of my own experience with friends and family that and [what] I observed when visiting people with that condition at different levels, because it's a progressive thing,' the Presumed Innocent star said. 'I can remember having a conversation with Felix, actually, in one particular scene where I was a little that I was moving into a realm that I shouldn't be. And all he said was, 'be honest' and that is always, always, always gonna work.' More Trending And Felix Solis, who played Jose – the manager of Cliff House – spoke about how impactful Bruce's early-onset dementia storyline was for him, as someone whose mother experienced the disease. 'The magically beautiful irony of it is that the ailment which Bill was portraying is one that actually triggers the person's curiosity. They ask a lot of questions, because my mother passed of that ailment that Bill played, and she was so curious and asked so many questions throughout the progression of the disease. 'It's just magically ironic that that is actually what he was doing as well.' View More » Sirens is available to stream on Netflix now. Got a story? First come, first served: Segerstrom Center to host free Earth Day Fix It Fair

Segerstrom Center for the Arts invites the public to come by next week and get some things fixed. If you have torn clothes, jeans that need patching, broken jewelry, busted lamps, wilted plants — or any other items that need fixing — head over to SCFTA's Julianne and George Argyros Plaza in Costa Mesa for some free repair help at the Earth Day Fix It Fair. 'Our fixers will try to fix anything, except electronics and relationships,' quipped Priscilla Reyes, SCFTA's community engagement coordinator. The Earth Day Fix It Fair, taking place on Saturday, April 19 starting at 1 p.m., is a partnership between Segerstrom Center and Eco Now, a zero-waste concept retailer with locations in Costa Mesa, Laguna Beach, Anaheim and Garden Grove. The fair's services are free, and first come, first served. 'We have been active in our local, O.C. community for many years,' said Thea Pauley, owner of Eco Now. 'Eco Now's mission is to encourage people to live more sustainably. Our stores create a great place to consume responsibly and our events are an added bonus. We regularly host clothing swaps, compost classes and eco-friendly marketplace events. A Fix It Fair makes sense to include in our services by helping people think in terms of reuse and repair instead of buying new.' Though this is the first Fix It Fair at Segerstrom Center, Eco Now has held two others at Arvida Book Co. in Tustin. 'The center is committed to building community and spreading goodwill by partnering with local Orange County businesses to put on inclusive events,' Reyes said. 'We are so excited to partner with Eco Now for our first-ever Earth Day Fix It Fair to promote sustainability and zero-waste living.' Reyes said six local fixers will offer their services at the event — including seamstress Emily Wallace, eco-sewist and co-founder of Eco Now Upcycled, and seamstress Mary Colmar, upcycle designer and DIY decor maker at Salad Bowl Dress. There's also jewelry fixer Jackie Barrera from Made with Love by Jax and plant expert Matthew Payawal, owner of Plant Matter Shop at the LAB Anti-Mall in Costa Mesa. General fixer Jason Mount from Urban Workshop in Costa Mesa is a woodworker who enjoys fixing and making things. Bike repairer Paul Nagel, project manager at nonprofit community bike center the Bicycle Tree, will also offer services. 'I think it's important to recognize that the things we discard every day are still on this planet with us, they don't just disappear after the garbage truck comes. They may be out of sight and out of mind, but it's still taking up space somewhere else and at overwhelming amounts,' Reyes said. 'Extending the life of our belongings and taking better care of them can help us save us money in the long run, decrease overproduction and help us learn practical skills that benefit our ability to self-sustain. We all know the phrase 'reduce, reuse, recycle,' but it's about time we add and normalize 'repair' to that sentiment.' Other free activities include a community bike ride to the Fix It Fair, organized by Santa Ana Active Streets. A reservation is required and space is limited. Eco Now is hosting a compost workshop from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., when the public can learn composting basics. Attendees can bring their own bucket or container to convert into a compost kit. Eco Now is also offering a refill station stocked with hand and body soaps, shampoo, conditioner, lotion and laundry concentrate. Guests can bring their own refillable or recycled container to fill with 4 ounces of product of their choice. Reyes said glass containers will be available for those who don't bring their own. DIY Craft Club is hosting a workshop with all the materials needed to start a junk journal. Reyes said guests can participate in a scrap swap by bringing any unwanted crafts materials for communal junk journaling — think old music sheets, magazines, stickers, etc. Attendees can also bring their favorite materials and memorabilia for their own use. The first 50 people to arrive get a free composition book. Costa Mesa-based Liquid 4 Life will have juice samples and there will also be eco-friendly children's crafts. 'We live in a culture where people are so used to throwing things away at the moment that it gets a little dirty, or has a small hole in it, or has a slight break,' Pauley said. 'It's important that we bring back skills and mindsets that encourage repair. This way, the items will stay out of landfills, we will acquire new skills and ultimately we will save money.' 34 Products For Anyone Who Loves To *Look* Like They Have Expensive Taste, But Doesn't Actually Want To Break The Bank

We hope you love our recommendations! Some may have been sent as samples, but all were independently selected by our editors. Just FYI, BuzzFeed and its publishing partners may collect a share of sales and/or other compensation from the links on this page. Shopping · Your friends will catch you sporting Cartier, Gucci, and Chanel... or at least that's what they'll *think*. 😉 Unless otherwise specified, all sizes in this post are listed in women's. 1. A bodycon jumpsuit oh-so-freakin' similar to the Aritzia Butter jumpsuit that has dominated your Insta page lately, but for like a fraction of the price. It's the perf 'fit for a low-impact workout, a casual outing, or simply modeling for your Insta story. No one has to know that you got it from Amazon. Promising review: "I never leave reviews but this jumpsuit deserves one!! It is an exact alternative for the Aritzia flared jumpsuit. I actually even like this one more than my one from Aritzia!! The length on this is SO much better. I am 5'7, and the Aritzia one just barely goes past my ankles…I am wearing platform sandals with this one and there's still extra length! Also, I am 28 weeks pregnant, and a small fits my bump — SO stretchy!! Definitely ordering more colors." — Stuart W. Get it from Amazon for $19.99+ (available in 10 colors and sizes S–XL). 2. A scoop-neck top with a buttery feel that reviewers swearrrr is pretty much exactly like the popular Skims top — except this one comes in tons of different colors so you can choose the best one (or five) for your outfit. Promising review: "At first, I was a little skeptical — I have been wanting to find a Skims-like material shirt for a while but didn't want to pay the price of one lol, and this shirt feels amazing. I will be getting one in every color now." — Julianne Get it from Amazon for $9.99 (available in 33 colors and sizes XXS–3XL). 3. A pair of stylish teardrop earrings so much cheaper than the (very) expensive Bottega Veneta ones that look exactly like it. These gold-plated earrings may look heavy, but reviewers swear they're lightweight and perfect for those with sensitive ears. Promising review:"These are absolutely BEAUTIFUL! If I didn't know any better, I would have said these are the Bottega Drop Earrings. I personally love the smaller ones. I have not ordered the larger ones yet. Smaller ones are truthfully the perfect size. We love a good alternative because who has $800+ to spend on the Bottegas." — Brittany Get them from Amazon for $9.99+ (available in 11 colors, two-packs, and an extra-large size). 4. A midi corset dress to make you feel like you're a modern day princess just taking a walk through the woods. It has a back cinch and a front tie, basically all the same features as the TikTok-famous House of CB Carmen dress (but you know, not $225) — your little heart will be aflutter at the sight of this cutesy dress. Check it out on TikTok. Promising reviews: "Bought this dress because I always wanted to get the House of CB dress but didn't want to pay over $250 for it. It's honestly so good! I got the size large in this since they didn't have my normal sizes, which are small to medium (I have a bigger chest, so I tend to size up). But since this has a corset back, I was able to cinch it up really tight and it fit perfectly!" — Chris Herfurth Kennedy "Beautiful, stunning perfection. This may be the best thing I've ever bought on Amazon. The corset in the back makes it fit like it was made for me. It's double-lined and not see-through at all, even though it's white. The straps are adjustable, the slit is a good height, and the fabric is slightly stretchy. I cannot say enough good things about it. It did come slightly wrinkly in the skirt, but nothing that a good steam won't fix." — Shoshanna Get it from Amazon for $53.99+ (available in 16 colors/styles and sizes 0–14). 5. A pair of comfortable clogs so you can look like you're sporting the all-too-popular Birkenstock Boston clogs just without that hefty price tag or the logo — but let's be honest, who's actually examining your shoes to check for that? Plus, reviewers actually think that these are comfier than Birks, and seriously how cool is that?! Promising review:"They look just like my real Birkenstock clogs!! The shape, the buckle, the fit: They all make the clog feel legit. They are also super comfy! There is cushioning in the heel that makes them very comfortable to wear. If you are hesitant, just buy them. This is SUCH a bargain considering how expensive real Birks are LOL." — Quinlan Hanrahan Get it from Amazon for $29.97+ (available in sizes 5–12, wide sizes, and in 14 colors). 6. Or a pair of Cushionaire cork-bottom sandals if you want that Mayari Birks feel but without that higher ticket price. They're incredibly flexible, so they're comfortable to wear for long walks across the beach or through the outlet mall. They have over 75,000 ratings on Amazon, and reviewers basically swear by them! Promising review: "I bought these sandals before a three-week trip in Europe; I didn't want to pay for Birks but did want something in similar style with good arch support. I was a little skeptical about the low price but gave them a they were the MOST comfortable sandals I've ever owned. I walked over 120 miles in them in three weeks on our trip and never once had foot pain. They broke in so quickly and were very supportive from the get-go — and still are! Highly recommend." — Han Lin Get them from Amazon for $29.98+ (available in sizes 5–12, including wide sizes, and 19 styles). 7. Slingback heels so similar to Chanel you'll find yourself triple checking the price just in case! You can pair 'em with slacks or a cutesy lil' dress — you'll basically be radiating luxury. Promising review:"This Chanel [alternative] is very in style right now. I wear them to work a lot with dark denim and a blazer. Or white jeans and a blazer. The heel is not too high, so it gives my 5'4' frame a little lift but not too much to get achy feet. I like the sling back because it stays on without blistering or moving around, and adds extra interest other than my solid black or nude pumps I wear to the office every day. I'm a size 6 with a narrow foot and these were true to size. I'm sure I'll get many years out of these shoes. They are a staple for the wardrobe without the hefty Chanel price tag. Love them!" — ND Get it from Amazon for $42.49 (available in sizes 5–11). 8. And a pair of slip-on loafer mules with the iconic gold clasp that'll have your friends swearingggg they're Gucci. Sophistication, meet an affordable price tag. Yeah, you def need these ASAP. Promising reviews:"Such cute shoes that are maybe even better than the designer inspiration! I ordered a 37 and usually am a 6.5. They fit perfectly. The footbed is more padded than the designer version. Leather is soft and comfortable on the foot. Sole is not slippery." — Emily Wilson "The shoes come very nicely packaged! These are my favorite shoes, once you break them in they are like BUTTER. I have bought two pairs myself, I own them in black and in white. My mom has them in black and wears them to work every day; she wanted to have a backup pair bc she loves them SO much. My brother wants to get a pair, too. LOL. I could not recommend these shoes more; I get so many compliments…people even think they are Gucci!" — Caroline King Get it from Amazon for $49.89+ (available in sizes 5–12 and in 10 colors). 9. A belt bag to keep your most valuable items strapped close to your chest — it's necessary while you weave through a busy mall or an over-populated airport terminal. And it's striking just how closely it resembles the $$$ Lululemon belt bag. BuzzFeed Shopping editor Elizabeth Lilly loves hers as well:"I wear a size L/XL in clothing and sometimes waist bags just don't work out so well for me. With this one, I can confirm that it fit around my waist comfortably without outerwear, across my chest without outerwear, *and* over a thick coat and several layers. The pockets inside are so handy and I even had room to spare throughout my Iceland trip. Just make sure that you zip the zipper ALL the way because the zipper goes down pretty far on the sides for easier access to contents." Promising review: "I'm SOO impressed with the quality of this bag! I've worn the Lululemon belt bag and I gotta say, this is pretty similar. Almost identical, except the Lululemon is a tiny bit smaller size. The Lululemon one also has a plastic zipper but this Amazon one is metal. I prefer the plastic but this one is OK. It might be better than Lululemon JUST for the fact that they have so many color options!" — Em Get it from Amazon for $12.98+ (available in 45 colors). 10. A faux pearl choker so dainty and elegant, Vivienne Westwood herself will be impressed by how ridiculously similar it looks to the real one. Snag one of these to add a bit of "ooh la la 🥂" to any 'fit you throw together. Promising review: "Run, Forrest, run!! Don't walk!! This is a perfect Vivienne Westwood [alternative]. I bought this when I didn't have enough money for the real one, but unless you do a microscopic closeup of the two, this necklace is the literal perfect [copy] of the original. It feels pretty weighty and doesn't tarnish easily. The size is also perfect and the color matches the real one better than the other ones in the market. The packaging was also super cute and protective." — Ziaaaa Get a two-pack (gold and silver) from Amazon for $15.99 (available in two other styles). 11. A pair of lightweight legging-style joggers reviewers can't help but compare to Lululemon's Align joggers. They're legit perfect for running errands, lounging around, or even hitting that cardio goal at the gym — because yeah, they're just that comfy. Promising review: "These are literally the best leggings/joggers I have ever owned, and I plan to eventually buy every single color. I originally saw these on TikTok and heard they were like the Lululemon ones but cheaper. I've never owned Lululemon leggings, but if they feel anything like these, then I have clearly been missing out. These are soft and absolutely perfect. I love the pockets and jogger style and that they fit like leggings and can be worn to the gym or dressed up with a cute outfit. I need to buy every color of these before they're gone!" — Courtney Get it from Amazon for $28.99+ (available in sizes XS–3XL and 23 colors). 12. A spandex-blend slip maxi dress sure to be your go-to piece any time of year. It's a gorgeous and simple dress that you'll find yourself slipping on every time you have an event where you wanna feel ✨fancy. ✨ Plus, it's so incredibly similar to the popular Skims one — but affordable enough that you can actually buy one in every color. Reviewers agree that if you want it fitted, size down. Promising reviews: "I saw this girl wearing this exact style of dress with a Skims tag on the back, and honestly, it made me so grateful that I purchased this dress instead. It looks exactly like the Skims version, and I could be biased, but the material of this dress looked better than the Skims one. If you want it to be a little snug, I would definitely recommend sizing down one size from your normal size. So freaking comfortable and made out of thick material." — Kaitlyn "I have the Skims dress in black and wanted to look for a cheaper version, but read reviews and some said that it is a bit looser than expected. I would agree that the small is a bit loose. If you want a snatched look, definitely get a size smaller, as it is very stretchy. I'm 5' tall so this is a bit long on me, even when I wear heels. In comparison to the Skims, the material is smoother while Skims has a ribbed texture. You honestly can't tell the difference. Good bang for your buck, if you ask me!" — Amazon Customer Get it from Amazon for $24.99 (available in sizes XXS–XL and 10 colors). 13. Or a ribbed square-neck, long-sleeve maxi dress incredibly similar to the popular Skims one for a fraction of the price. It's soft, it's stretchy, and it's uber comfy so you'll find yourself reaching for this piece almost every single day. Promising review: "I'd been looking for a Skims alternative — I have the Skims dress, love it, and wanted it in another color. Ordered a size large, which is my normal size, and it fit perfectly! I'm so very happy with my purchase! Literally half the price of Skims and it's identical! If you've tried the Skims dress, go ahead and order, you won't be disappointed!" — Savvychique Get it from Amazon for $36.99 (available in sizes XS–XXL and nine colors). 14. A cubic zirconia cuff that'll have strangers actually thinking you spent (wait, checks notes) $17,000 😱 on the Cartier Love Bracelet. Not only is it less than $12, but you don't need to screw it on — unlike the way too ridiculously expensive version. Promising review: "This is a product where you can't say 'you get what you paid for' because it really looks sophisticated. It doesn't look cheap. I bought this because the Cartier love bracelets are very expensive and I don't like doing the screw because I don't plan to always wear them since I have a little kid and sometimes it's uncomfortable. If you want a Cartier love bracelet [alternative], this is it! Easy to open and close. Very flawless. Why did I just think about this!? Lol." — Shiexil Get it from Amazon for $11.99+ (available in three finishes, nine other styles, and five sizes). 15. And on that note, a cubic zirconia ring because you've always wanted the Cartier Love Ring to match, but not the price attached to it. It's simple, it's elegant, and it's pretty much guaranteed to never go out of style. Time to get one in every metal. Promising review: "The perfect non-name-brand ring you can find, honestly. I wasn't looking for a Cartier knock-off when I found this ring, but I have had people ask me if it's the real deal. I honestly love this ring, though; the sizing was accurate, it is weighted well, none of the 'diamonds' have fallen off, and it hasn't tarnished! I've worn it daily for almost a year now and it has held up well. It has some very small scratches on it, but that's typical of most rings. For the price, I am super happy with this ring and I honestly can't believe how well it has handled everything I've put it through." — Eva Richterkessing Get it from Amazon for $9.99 (available in three finishes, two styles, and sizes 5–12). 16. A sleeveless halter bodysuit so you don't have to overpay for a closet staple ever again. Its buttery soft feel reminds reviewers of the famous Skims one, with some even claiming that they prefer it to the name brand! Some reviewers said that they were able to skip wearing a bra with it! Promising reviews: "Okay this is so good. I had the Zara bodysuit identical to this, but it quickly got stretched out, so I tried this one out. It is 10 times better than that one. The fit is perfect, it hugs you just right, and is supportive enough that I won't wear a bra. Also, not see-through at all! Amazing. Need in all the colors." — Dawn E. "Saw these in a TikTok, and I took a chance. The sherbet orange one looks just like the picture, and it's double-layered material, so it's not see-through. It's smooth material and lays flat. Will def buy more." — Amazon Customer Get it from Amazon for $19.97+ (available in sizes XS–XXL and 28 colors). 17. A tote bag people will ~swear~ is the Longchamp Le Pliage bag at first (and second, and third) glance — after all, it even folds up into a lil' compact rectangle just like it. It's the perfect bag to take along to the office thanks to how sleek and professional it looks — plus, it's large enough to fit a laptop, toiletry bag, and everything else you could possibly need. Promising review: "I absolutely love this bag!! I needed something to use when I'm traveling, especially for when I go to trade shows and meetings. I've always lugged my backpack everywhere and finally got fed up with it on a trip this past week. I also wanted something that was sophisticated looking and had a full zipper. I love the material because it's easy to clean. It looks almost exactly like the Longchamp bag, too, which is the main reason why I got it. I've actually been using it daily by putting my small purse in it and am able to put other things in it as well (small jacket, water bottle, small reusable bag, etc.) It has two inner pockets, which are near the top of the bag. One is zipped, and one isn't. It stays on my shoulder and doesn't slip off, unlike other bags I've had. I'm curious to see how well it holds and for how long, but so far I'm very impressed and very happy with the quality!" — Kelsey Get it from Amazon for $26.99 (available in four colors). 18. Or an elevated laptop tote bag because you deserve to strut into work in style. It's roomy, super versatile, and the perfect alternative to the Béis Work Tote, but a lot less $$$. Reviewers even say they like this one a lot better. Promising reviews: "It's much more spacious than it looks. It's very sleek and stylish. I use it as my work bag and find that it looks professional and has enough space for all of my stuff. I carry a laptop, pencil case, two books, makeup bag, water bottle, wallet, lotion, phone and laptop chargers, and other small miscellaneous objects. Still plenty of space. And when you carry it, it doesn't feel bulky or cumbersome." — Su "I had purchased the Béis bag in the past and have gone through four of them in one year. This bag is the perfect [alternative] but 100,000x better quality! The lining hasn't ripped like the past bags I've purchased, and it has great compartments and durability. This bag is a must for the quality, style and price!! I will never go back to another brand." — Amazon Customer Get it from Amazon for $34.86 (available in nine styles). 19. A cropped padded workout tank if you've always wanted the Lululemon look but you don't feel like dropping 💸💸💸 on the name brand. The look and material is so comparable to Lulu, literally no one will believe you were able to snag this from Amazon. Time to get one in every color. Check it out on TikTok. Promising reviews:"Honestly saw this on TikTok and contemplated getting it for a long time. I'm so glad I committed! It's tight and holds everything together really well. It's extremely comfortable. The padding is amazing so you don't have to worry about a bra underneath at all. You can wear it with sweats or leggings to the gym or even dress it up for a night out. Considering more colors for sure!" — Kristyn Long "This cami is SOOO high quality; it feels exactly like, if not even BETTER quality than, similar Lululemon yoga camis. The length is perfect, not too short not too long. After reading reviews, I decided to size up and get a large because some people said if you get it too small, the straps might cut into you, and it'd be too short. I agree with that! They're so soft, I'm just shocked at the quality, and such cute colors! I got white and a light green. Absolutely obsessed with these and will be ordering more!" — Rosa Rodriquez Get it from Amazon for $21.99 (available in sizes S–XXL and in 26 colors). 20. And another cropped tank so similar to the popular Lululemon Align Tank, your jaw will absolutely drop when you see how inexpensive these are in comparison. This top is super versatile, so feel free to wear it with a cute pair of jeans on your way to brunch, or with leggings as you go for your weekly Pilates class. Promising review: "I was looking for a Lululemon Align tank [alternative] and this is it! I'm honestly surprised this top hasn't gotten more attention because it is such a gem!! I love activewear and I'm very impressed by the quality of this top for the price. The fabric is so soft stretchy and opaque yet sleek enough where it won't pill. I'm 5'6 and this top hits me right above my waist so I can comfortably wear high waisted leggings/pants without a ton of midriff being exposed. There is a lot of structure to the top which aids in providing medium support and functionality to the top even without adjustable straps. I'm hoping the straps won't stretch out but the bra band inside is tight yet comfortable. Even the foam cups are nice! Because of the design, I'm not sure how this top would perform for bigger cup sizes as I do have a bit of side boob. Nothing I can't adjust, but I can see this being an issue for larger-chested girls. I am just so in love with the sweetheart neckline and sleek silhouette and I'm very pleased with this purchase. 😁 This is a great staple piece for anyone who's ballin on a budget. Do not hesitate to buy this top!" — Allie Get it from Amazon for $22.99 (available in 29 colors and sizes XS–3XL). 21. A chain purse if you've always salivated over the thought of owning Gucci's Dionysus bag, but your bank account says ✨no.✨ This has the same chain style and front clasp, so literally no one will be able to tell the difference — don't worry, I won't spill your lil' secret. Promising review: "Let me spill the tea — it's giving major Gucci vibes! This bag is a total [alternative], and I'm here for it!!!!! It's super cute, perfectly sized, and I'm completely obsessed. The snake print design adds that touch of luxury and edginess that I crave in a purse. Whether I'm rocking a casual look or dolled up for a night out, this bag pulls everything together like magic. The chain detail? For the price, it's everything. Talk about a chic statement piece. If you're all about that Gucci-esque style without breaking the bank then get ready to turn heads and have everyone wondering, 'Is that a Gucci?' Oh honey, it's a fashion secret we'll keep to ourselves." — Rita Get it from Amazon for $28.99+ (available in 21 colors). 22. Or a quilted purse that's really giving ✨Chanel.✨ It's luxurious, has quilt stitching (be still, my beating heart), three compartments, and is super sophisticated. You'll literally find yourself reaching for this bag on every occasion. The best part? This bag won't cost you a whole month's rent. Promising reviews: "I purchased this bag because of the Chanel look and I've gotten lots of compliments on this bag. I'm glad I purchased it." — Carrollpickard "I needed a new everyday bag and wanted it to have a kinda upscale look without having to spend too much. I'm so pleased with this purchase. It is now my favorite every day bag. It's not too big (I don't like carrying big bags), but you can carry a nice amount of stuff in it. The color is nice and feels sturdy. I plan on buying a couple more colors!" — Brittany Get it from Amazon for $23.99+ (available in 14 colors). 23. A classic pleated tennis skirt to make it look like you belong at a country club tennis court — no one's gotta know you've got a budget. Reviewers have compared these to Nike, Alo, and Aritzia — hello, bougie! Promising reviews: "I LOVE this skirt! I have the original Nike one and they are identical. The only difference is that it doesn't have a logo on it, but tbh, I prefer the no-logo look. It's such a good buy and SO comfortable!" — Tayler "I was skeptical at first but once it arrived! WOW! I love this skirt! I need one in every color now. Very comfortable, breathable fabric, and the skirts have secret pockets on the inside of the shorts! I really like it, and the length is perfect! Oh, and there's a super cool thick band around the skirt top. It looks very nice I received a lot of compliments on skirt! Definitely recommend! ❤️" — VM Get it from Amazon for $31.99 (available in nine colors and XS–XXL). 24. An oversized hoodie because why pay for an Abercrombie Essential Popover hoodie when this is basically the same thing for so much cheaper? You're gonna wanna snag one (or five) of these ASAP. Promising review: "I think I like this hoodie better than the Abercrombie Essential hoodie! So soft, and the quality is amazing. Definitely oversized. I want one in every color:)" — Jen Schumacher Get it from Amazon for $39.99 (available in 26 colors and sizes S–XL). 25. A high-waisted mini skirt that looks incredibly familiar (hello, Aritzia? Is that you?) and made with a satiny material that is sure to make you feel ~très chic~. This skirt comes in a bunch of different colors, so you can snag a bunch of 'em for the same price as a single name-brand one — and no one will even be able to tell the difference. Promising reviews: "It was the perfect mini length, not too short. Keep in mind this skirt is very high waisted, if that isn't what you're looking for. Ordered the white and it's not see through if worn with nude underwear. I love it! Looks just like the one from Aritzia for $100. Might ordered another color :): — Sam Waldbillig "I LIVE in these skirts. I am back to order more so I figured I would leave a review. These skirts make any outfit standout. Last night I paired the off-white skirt with a black turtleneck, scarf, and knee high boots. Let me tell you, it was giving ELEGANT. I definitely recommend these skirts. They also hold up over time and iron well. Fits true to size." — LarZ Get it from Amazon for $20.99 (available in sizes XS–XL and 30 colors/styles). 26. A simple, gorgeous tennis bracelet to add some ✨sparkle✨ to your wrist, but ya know, without costing you the down payment of a nice house in the suburbs. This elegant piece looks just like Swarovski, and reviewers say it doesn't tarnish, so it's bound to last you a lifetime. After all, diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but cubic zirconia is her lover. Promising reviews: "Soooo pretty. It's 100% a Swarovski [alternative] for so cheap. Looks exactly like the photo, and I wear it every day." — Trysten Walters "I just lost my very real gold tennis bracelet. I've heard good things about this company and decided to order one that looked like the one I lost. It just came in, and it looks as nice as my real one. I don't know how it will do as time goes, but for $19, it's a great buy." — Alina Get it from Amazon for $17.95+ (available in three lengths, 14-karat gold-plated or 18-karat gold vermeil, and in yellow, rose, or white gold). 27. A lingerie bodysuit with an elegant lace pattern and plunging neckline to make you feel ~sexy~ without having to drop $$$ on that expensive Victoria's Secret set you've been eyeing. Plus, you won't cry when you accidentally lose a pair or scratch them up at the beach — which, let's be honest, is more likely to happen than not. Promising reviews:"Love these so so much. I wanted the chic Bottega Veneta designer pair, but these look exactly like those for less than $20. Deal of the century. They are comfortable and extremely well made and I seriously can't get over the price. I'm thinking about buying another color because I love them so much." — Kam "I saw these sunglasses on TikTok a couple of months ago and finally ordered them. I'm so glad I did. I LOVE them!! And yeah, don't worry, it even has the thumb holes. Some versions of the jacket have pockets, too! Promising review: "TikTok brought me here! I saw many reviews for the Lululemon BBL jacket; however, I was not ready to spend over $100 on a jacket. I'm a frugal gal. I absolutely love this jacket; my boyfriend told me it looked great, and I got many compliments. Truly the perfect alternative for the BBL jacket!" — Bri Campos Get it from Amazon for $19.95 (available in sizes XS–XL and in 15 colors). 30. A loungewear set for those of you who don't want to sacrifice comfort for style. You can lounge around confident in your fashionista status with a set that looks ridiculously similar to the Skims set the Kardashians are known to adore. Promising review:"No joke, these are pretty much exactly the same as my Skims lounge set for half the price. The pants graze the tops of my feet even when I wear them high-waisted at my belly button, so I think they're plenty long. The robe is like wearing a blanket, but still looks put together. Anyway, I'm back here to buy a second color because I loved them so much!" — Jenna Get the three-piece set from Amazon for $54.99 (available in sizes S–XL and in 24 colors). 32. A chunky-heeled designer lookalike because the viral Versace shoes you've been salivating over for months are just a lil' too much, and why spend all that money when you don't have to? These gorgeous heels will elevate your fashion game completely; you can pair them with literally anything. Plus reviewers even say they're comfy?? I want three pairs, STAT. Promising reviews: " I've been wanting the Versace ones but obviously can't afford them. I saw a TikToker share these so I snatched them up immediately. I'm in love!!! I'm a 5.5 in heels so I got the 5 and they fit perfectly. They are pretty comfy too, which is nice. I'm thinking about getting them in different colors now." — Courtney Van Court "Baby goooorl... March yourself into the checkout browser because these are so so so good!! They're really comfortable, which I wasn't expecting at all except for the ankle strap, but I think that's because I'm sensitive??? The height was something I was a little scared of, but they're so easy to walk in; I suppose the platform cancels out a portion of the heel. Obviously, they're not perfect, but if you want that, you should probably go talk Versace with $1,800 in your pocket." — Anika Get them from Amazon for $49.99+ (available in sizes 4–10.5 and 10 colors). 33. A pair of high-waisted quick-dry running shorts that are super comfortable, lightweight, and affordable — especially when compared to the pricey Lululemon's Hottie Hot shorts. Promising review: "I actually have Lululemon shorts, but I was looking for a cheaper alternative…This is the one! Super cute, true to size, and comes in a lot of colors. The material feels the exact same as the Lululemon! — Abuchanan Get it from Amazon for $19.99 (available in sizes XS–3XL and 24 colors). 34. A set of beautiful faux pearl hair clips so you can feel like you're on the steps of The Met, reading the latest Gossip Girl post without tendrils of hair falling into your eyes. It's minimal, it's chic, and let's be honest — it's totally something Blair would wear. But ya know... without the hefty price tag of actual pearls. Amazon Promising review: "Most favorite hair clips! These just dress up anything you are wearing, but you don't have to fix your hair. I love the variety of sizes. The pearls are a beautiful shade of white, I get compliments every time I wear these." — Molly Get a four-pack from Amazon for $7.99 (available in five different assortments). And with that, I'll leave you with this quote: "Whoever said money doesn't buy happiness didn't know where to shop." Alloy Entertainment Reviews have been edited for length and/or clarity.
