Local group highlights barriers to women getting equal pay
BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – Tuesday was Equal Pay Day — a day dedicated to remind employers that women still often make less than their male counterparts for doing the same work.
To bring awareness, the Youngstown Business and Professional Women group held an Equal Pay Mixer Tuesday evening in Boardman.
The featured speaker was Cincinnati's Julie Doyle, who's worked in human resources for 30 years. She said there are barriers to equal pay.
'Some of the barriers are pay transparency. Quite frankly, it's not really understanding how your pay decisions are being made and how, maybe, unconscious bias can play into that. Women, on the whole, do not negotiate salary as men do and this keeps them further behind,' Doyle said.
The event was held at Boardman's La Casa Mexicana restaurant because it's owned by two women — sisters Maria and Elena Hernandez.
