Husband running errand for his wife wins huge lottery prize with lucky number
An Illinois man won a huge lottery prize after he bought a scratch-off ticket while running an errand for his wife. 'My wife wanted a soda, so I ran out to a nearby gas station. At the checkout, I decided to pick up a couple of scratch-off tickets, too,' he told lottery officials, according to a May 16 news release from the Illinois Lottery. He had no idea that running to the gas station in River Grove to buy his wife a drink and grabbing a $10 Jumbo Bucks ticket would lead to him winning $1 million. 'When I scratched the ticket at home and realized I'd won a million dollars, I was in total shock— but my wife was even more stunned. She didn't believe me at all. I had to scan the ticket on my app to prove it, and even then, she still thought I was playing a prank on her,' the man told lottery officials. His wife said she never imagined this would happen. 'Of course this is amazing, but it's also hard to wrap your head around. We've never known anyone who's won a prize this big, so you start to think, maybe this doesn't actually happen – but we are now proof that it really does. We feel incredibly lucky, grateful, and honestly still surprised,' she told lottery officials. The man nicknamed himself 'Fateful 56' because he said the number brought him luck. 'The winning number on the ticket was 56 — and I'm 56 years old. I guess you could say I'm his lucky charm,' his wife said, according to lottery officials. When the man sent a photo of his winning ticket to one of his best friends, the friend responded with a photo of his motorcycle's license plate, with the number 56 on it. 'I actually picked the ticket because I saw the name 'Bucks' on it. I'm a hunter, and I thought it was a hunting-themed ticket — turned out, I was wrong,' the man told lottery officials. River Grove is about a 15-mile drive northwest from downtown Chicago.

River Grove lottery player credits number 56 for winning $1M in scratch-off game
An Illinois Lottery player is celebrating after winning $1 million from a scratch-off ticket purchased at a suburban gas station. The player, who nicknamed himself "Fateful 56," bought the $10 Jumbo Bucks ticket at a Shell gas station at 2474 N. Thatcher Avenue in River Grove, about 15 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. "My wife wanted a soda, so I ran out to a nearby gas station. At the checkout, I decided to pick up a couple of scratch-off tickets, too," he said. When he realized he had won the prize, he said his wife thought it was a prank. "She didn't believe me at all! I had to scan the ticket on my app to prove it, and even then, she still thought I was playing a prank on her," he said. "Of course, this is amazing, but it's also hard to wrap your head around," his wife said. But there's a story behind the number 56. "The winning number on the ticket was 56, and I'm 56 years old! I guess you could say I'm his lucky charm," the wife said. The license plate on his friend's motorcycle also reads "56," but that's not why he chose the ticket. "I actually picked the ticket because I saw the name 'Bucks' on it. I'm a hunter, and I thought it was a hunting-themed ticket—turned out, I was wrong," the winner said. The gas station will receive a $10,000 bonus, one percent of the prize amount, for selling the winning ticket. So far this year, 25 scratch-off tickets worth $1 million or more have already been won by players, according to lottery officials, Players must be 18 years of age to participate.

Lottery player talked to his ticket in South Carolina. Then he started screaming
A stroke of luck led to a South Carolina man's big lottery win — or perhaps it was a 'pep talk' that did the trick. 'I talked to my ticket,' the Lowcountry resident told South Carolina Education Lottery officials, per an April 14 news release. 'I said, 'Come on, I need a good one.'' He bought the Jumbo Bucks scratcher at a BlueWater Market in Mount Pleasant, a short drive east from Charleston, officials said. Soon after, he scratched the $2 ticket to reveal a $50,000 jackpot prize, officials said. That's when he started screaming. 'It was amazing,' he told lottery officials. 'I was ecstatic.' The lucky player beat odds of 1 in 600,000 to win the grand prize, the lottery's website says. Three top prizes of $50,000 are still up for grabs in the Jumbo Bucks game. The man said he plans to share his winnings with his wife and kids.
