Armizan dismisses claim on gas cylinder subsidies

Published on: Saturday, May 24, 2025 Published on: Sat, May 24, 2025 By: Hayati Dzulkifli Text Size: Armizan (left) described the claim by Warisan's Datuk Junz Wong (right) as 'totally baseless'. Kota Kinabalu: Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali denied the allegation that the Government had abolished gas cylinder subsidies for food outlets using more than 42kg of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). He described the claim by Warisan's Datuk Junz Wong as 'totally baseless'. 'The State Government has no jurisdiction over LPG regulation. It's under the purview of the Federal Government,' he said. He pointed out that any food vendor or stall operator simply needs to apply for a Controlled Goods Permit (PBK) if their LPG usage exceeds 42kg or three cylinders. 'This requirement is in line with the Supply Control Regulations (Amendment) 2021, which came into force on Oct 15, 2021, during the previous federal administration. 'This gazetted regulation requires any party storing (using) more than 42kg of LPG at their premises to apply for a PBK, as LPG is a controlled item. Advertisement 'Those who do not store or use LPG above that limit are not subject to the PBK requirement. 'I don't think many food outlets need to store or use more than 42kg of LPG, unless they're running large-scale operations,' he said after officiating the Festive Season Maximum Price Scheme (SHMMP) in conjunction with the Kaamatan Festival and Gawai Day at Pisompuruan hall, at Kg Kobuni, Inanam, Friday. Armizan said the document Junz claimed to be a compound notice was in fact a Premises Inspection Statement – a standard document used by KPDN enforcement officers during routine inspections. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Warisan wants cooking oil effort revived

Published on: Friday, May 23, 2025 Published on: Fri, May 23, 2025 Text Size: Wong emphasised that Bess Cooking Oil, for example, was priced at only RM21.25 per bottle shows that it was a clear demonstration that Sabah has the capacity to control its own supply chain and offer better choices to its people. Kota Kinabalu: Warisan Vice President Datuk Junz Wong has called for the revival of Sabah's once-successful cooking oil industry, urging renewed efforts towards economic self-sufficiency through value-added industries. Speaking as a panellist at the Reset Sabah: Economy forum held on May 10, Wong said the success of the Warisan government's edible oil initiative, which for the first time enabled Sabah to produce and market its own locally refined cooking oil brands, 'Bess, Gold and Onsoi'. 'This was not just a plan on paper. It was implemented under the Warisan administration. We made history by launching Sabah's own cooking oil, refined and packaged locally and sold at a much more affordable price compared to West Malaysian products,' he said. He emphasised that Bess Cooking Oil, for example, was priced at only RM21.25 per bottle shows that it was a clear demonstration that Sabah has the capacity to control its own supply chain and offer better choices to its people. 'The initiative was part of Warisan's broader vision to industrialise Sabah and reduce dependency on the Peninsula by encouraging local businesses to invest in downstream processing of palm oil. 'The goal was to build a full value chain from plantation to refinery to branding, right here in Sabah. It was a bold step towards economic autonomy,' he said. Advertisement He also emphasised that reviving and expanding the local edible oil industry would bring many benefits, including more affordable, higher-quality products for the locals also lower production and transportation costs for local businesses. Besides, job creation and economic growth in both rural and urban areas also enhanced supply chain resilience and greater economic sovereignty for the State. 'Warisan's vision was always clear, which is to industrialise Sabah, not just talk about it. We have proven it can be done and once we are back in government, we will do it again and push it even further,' Wong said. He said Sabah must move beyond exporting raw materials and start producing more finished goods locally. 'We must stop being just resource providers and start being value creators. That is how we build a strong and self-reliant Sabah, by keeping the economic value here, for the people of Sabah.' * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? ECoS asked to take action on genset fee issue

Junz Wong KOTA KINABALU (May 19): Warisan vice president Datuk Junz Wong has fired back at the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS), calling on the regulatory body to take immediate action against contractors who have been charging exorbitant fees related to genset licensing fees that have gone viral and stirred widespread public anger. In response to ECoS CEO Datuk Ir Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid's recent statement denying that the commission imposed high charges, Wong questioned why ECoS remained silent while such quotations, reaching up to RM25,000 for two gensets, were being charged by so called 'third party' or 'runners'? 'If ECoS claims these are not their charges, then why the delay in taking action against the 'runner' contractors or consultants involved? Why allow such practices to go unchecked and let Sabahans continue to suffer confusion and financial burden?' he asked. Wong demanded clarity on whether these contractors were appointed or approved by ECoS. 'If they are acting under your approval, then ECoS must bear responsibility. If not, then come out clearly and act against them for misleading the public and overcharging Sabahans,' he said. Wong also questioned the timing of ECoS's enforcement of the license fees, noting that genset owners had not been charged such fees for years under federal control. 'Now that energy regulation has been handed back to Sabah, a move fought for and delivered by Warisan under MA63, instead of celebrating this with reforms and better services, Sabahans are being penalized with new license charges. Why now? Why burden the very people who have been forced to rely on gensets due to SESB's failure to provide stable electricity?' he said. Wong pointed out that the core issue lies in the state's unstable and insufficient power supply, which has driven many businesses to purchase gensets to survive. 'Sabahan restaurant owners, and manufacturers didn't buy gensets for no reason, they bought them out of desperation, just to keep their businesses running through frequent blackouts.' 'To now impose license fees on these gensets without fixing the root cause, is totally ridiculous. If SESB and ECoS cannot provide stable and affordable electricity, then do not punish the people for trying to survive.' He urged ECoS to not only act against contractors but also come clean about the rationale for enforcing the standard genset fees now, after years of non-collection. 'Don't just explain what the fee structure is, explain why it's suddenly being enforced, and why Sabahans were not informed earlier.' Wong concluded by urging the GRS-PH state government to stop hiding behind technicalities and start prioritizing the people. 'Sabahans deserve better, help them meet their needs, ease their suffering, not add to their burdens.'
