Michigan basketball G Justin Pippen commits to Cal via transfer portal

Michigan basketball G Justin Pippen commits to Cal via transfer portal There was great enthusiasm in Ann Arbor after Dusty May took over the Michigan basketball program a little over a year ago, not only because of his pedigree and some of the transfer portal players he was set to land, but also because of his recruiting prowess. The Wolverines were holding onto one commitment in Durral 'Phat Phat' Brooks, who won the Mr. Michigan Basketball award. But they needed some help. Thus, when May managed to secure four-star guard Justin Pippen, the son of NBA legend Scottie Pippen, it made some ears around college basketball perk up. However, Pippen played sparingly and was often on the injury report. Such was the case in the late season, and even as Michigan's run in the postseason was still ongoing, Pippen entered the transfer portal. And on Tuesday, he officially chose his destination as he's heading to Berkeley to play for Cal. The maize and blue have lost several via the portal: Tre Donaldson committed to Miami, Pippen to Cal, while Jace Howard and Sam Walters have yet to select new destinations. However, the Wolverines secured top-overall prospect Yaxel Lendeborg from UAB (though he's testing the NBA draft waters), North Carolina point guard Elliot Cadeau, and Illinois forward Morez Johnson Jr. thus far. And currently, they're trending for UCLA center Aday Mara. The Wolverines will return guard LJ Cason, who broke out during the postseason, but are still awaiting if Nimari Burnett will return for another season.

Justin Pippen, Scottie Pippen's youngest son, will reportedly leave Michigan and enter transfer portal

Freshman guard Justin Pippen will leave Michigan after one season, reportedly deciding to enter the transfer portal, according to 247Sports. The Wolverines' men's basketball team is currently in the NCAA tournament Sweet 16 after defeating Texas A&M on Saturday. Pippen averaged 1.6 points, 0.7 rebounds and 0.6 assists in 28 games. He shot 27% on 30 3-point attempts. He was not with the team during Michigan's two NCAA tournament games in Denver this past weekend and also did not travel to Indianapolis for the Big Ten tournament while recovering from concussion symptoms, according to the Detroit Free Press. As a senior, he averaged 16.5 points, 4.9 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game. Pippen, 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, committed to Michigan over Florida, Stanford, California and Texas A&M. He was ranked the No. 77 player by Rivals (and 16th-rated point guard) in the 2024 recruiting class and was the first high school recruit signed by head coach Dusty May after he became Michigan's head coach. Michigan, the No. 5 seed in the South region, will play No. 1 Auburn on Friday with tipoff scheduled for 9:39 p.m. ET.

Justin Pippen to enter transfer portal even though his Michigan team is still in Sweet 16

Justin Pippen to enter transfer portal even though his Michigan team is still in Sweet 16 Michigan Wolverines freshman guard Justin Pippen will reportedly enter the transfer portal, which is particularly surprising due to the timing. That is because Michigan is one of the teams that advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA men's basketball tournament, which means his team is still alive and will have a chance to cut down the nets at the end of March Madness. While it is not all that uncommon for a player to enter the transfer portal despite their team making the tournament, it is far more rare to see someone make that decision before their team is actually eliminated. Pippen, a freshman and former four-star recruit from Sierra Canyon in Southern California, averaged just 6.7 minutes per game during the season. He is the son of Basketball Hall of Fame forward Scottie Pippen and younger brother of Memphis Grizzlies guard Scotty Pippen Jr. The freshman played high school basketball alongside Bryce James (son of LeBron James and brother of Los Angeles Lakers guard Bronny James), Kamron Martin (son of former NBA player Kenyon Martin and younger brother of Utah Jazz forward KJ Martin), and Ashton Hardaway (son of former NBA player and Memphis Tigers coach Penny Hardaway). Pippen also received collegiate offers from Georgia Tech, Stanford, and Texas A&M before enrolling at Michigan. He was ruled out of the NCAA men's basketball tournament after reportedly suffering concussion symptoms and did not travel with the team for the Big Ten Tournament or March Madness. Today is the first day that Pippen could officially enter the portal as the window officially opened. However, it does not make a ton of sense for why the window would open while the tournament is still happening. As the current rules go, it creates for some potentially awkward situations like the one involving Pippen.

However, May is already losing one of his signature players via recruiting. Having not played for some time due to injury, freshman point guard Justin Pippen — the son of Chicago Bulls legend Scottie Pippen — appears to be on the move.
