North Carolina man tied to Maxton robbery arrested after cross-county chase
ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. (WBTW) — A North Carolina man was arrested Thursday in connection with a shooting after he led deputies on a cross-county pursuit, the Robeson County Sheriff's Office said.
Justus W. Simmons, 41, of Bolivia, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, fleeing and eluding arrest with a motor vehicle, and multiple traffic violations. He is being held in the Robeson County Detention Center on a $100,000 bond.
The shooting happened on Tuesday at the C&P store in Maxton. A 48-year-old Rowland man was wounded and taken to the hospital and treated for injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.
The pursuit began Thursday in the area of Corey Road in Maxton when investigators tried to stop a vehicle connected to the shooting, the sheriff's office said. It continued on Highway 74 East, with the vehicle avoiding Stop Sticks on several occasions.
It ended with Simmons' arrest in Boardman, in Columbus County, when the car became disabled after driving over two sets of Stop Sticks, the sheriff's office said.
The investigation is ongoing, and according to the sheriff's department, more charges are likely. The sheriff's office, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and the Columbus County Sheriff's Office assisted in the arrest.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Robeson County Sheriff's Office at 910-671-3170.
