Meadows makes season debut with Detroit Tigers after being sidelined by an arm injury

CHICAGO (AP) — Parker Meadows had a big smile on his face. It had been a long time since he had played in a major league game. Meadows was activated by the Detroit Tigers on Monday after missing the start of the season because of a nerve issue in his upper right arm. He started in center field and led off for the opener of a three-game series at the Chicago White Sox. 'I didn't sleep much last night, just thinking about the day,' Meadows said. 'Excited to be here.' The major league-leading Tigers optioned infielder/outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy to Triple-A Toledo after Sunday's 1-0 victory at Kansas City. To make room for Meadows on the 40-man roster, right-hander Ryan Cusick was designated for assignment. Meadows was injured in Detroit's spring training opener on Feb. 22 on a throw from center field. He appeared in eight rehab games in the minors beginning on May 21, batting .259 with a homer and five RBIs. 'He's a glue guy, and the guys love him,' Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. 'He played at an incredibly high level for us on both sides of the ball, and we have missed him. Our guys have done a really good job of kind of picking up the pieces and being able to adjust to life without him, but we're better with him.' Meadows, 25, hit .244 with nine homers and 28 RBIs in 82 games for Detroit last season. He also batted .269 (7 for 26) in seven postseason games, helping the Tigers reach the AL Division Series. The road back to the majors took longer than Meadows expected when he first got hurt. 'It was tough, but just put my head down and worked every day,' he said. 'We've got a really good training staff here. Keep a good head on my shoulders and they got me right.' One of the last steps for Meadows before rejoining Detroit was trying a couple of hard throws during his rehab stint. 'At first it was a little eh,' he said. 'But the more throws I made, the better it felt. It feels good now.' The return of Meadows gives Hinch another option on a versatile Tigers team that had won six of seven going into the matchup with the last-place White Sox. Javier Báez, who played an impressive center field while Meadows was out, was back at shortstop for the series opener in Chicago. Hinch said Báez is going to move around the diamond. 'I told Javy, 'Don't take the outfield glove (and) throw it away. You're still going to need it,'' Hinch said. ___ AP MLB:

Tigers reinstate CF Parker Meadows for 2025 debut

June 2 - The Detroit Tigers reinstated center fielder Parker Meadows from the 60-day injured list Monday and had him in the leadoff spot for a series-opening matchup against the Chicago White Sox. Meadows, 25, was set to make his season debut after experiencing a nerve issue in his right (throwing) shoulder during spring training. In 119 games over the previous two seasons, Parker is a career .241 hitter with 12 home runs and 41 RBIs. In corresponding moves, outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy was optioned to Triple-A Toledo, while right-hander Ryan Cusick was designated for assignment to open a spot on the 40-man roster. Malloy, 25, was batting .215 with one home run and 16 RBIs in 45 games this season. Cusick, 25, has yet to play in the major leagues. He spent most of the past four seasons in the Athletics' system before making one appearance at Toledo. --Field Level Media

Detroit Tigers sweep game series with 4-3 win over San Francisco Giants

Justyn-Henry Malloy hit a go-ahead single in a four-run fifth inning to help the Detroit Tigers rally to beat the San Francisco Giants 4-3 on Wednesday. The American League-leading Tigers swept the three-game series and closed their homestand with a four-game winning streak. Detroit generated all of its offense in the fifth with Colt Keith's two-run double and Malloy's two-out, two-run single. Brenan Hanifee (3-2) allowed one hit and struck out one in one inning. Tommy Kahnle picked up his seventh save after stranding two runners that he inherited with no outs in the eighth inning and pitching a perfect ninth. Landen Roupp (3-4) allowed four runs — one earned — on five hits and two walks while striking out seven over four innings. The Giants chased Jackson Jobe with two outs in the fifth inning, leading 3-0, but couldn't take advantage of additional scoring opportunities. LaMonte Wade had an RBI double to right in the second inning and Heliot Ramos hit a two-run homer in the fifth to give the Giants a 3-0 lead. San Francisco, which left 10 runners on base, has scored four or fewer runs in 11 straight games for the first time since early in the 2024 season. San Francisco's Mike Yastrzemski hit an inning-ending groundout in the eighth against Kahnle. The Tigers were a baseball-best 67-33 from Aug. 11 of last season through their win Tuesday night in the second game of the series against San Francisco. After San Francisco and Detroit have a day off on Thursday, Giants LHP Kyle Harrison (0-1, 3.86) is expected to be on the mound at Miami on Friday night while Tigers RHP Casey Mize (6-1, 2.45) is scheduled to start at Kansas City.
