Three minors arrested in Amman for desecrating Jordanian flags
Jordanian security forces have arrested three minors of Arab nationality for desecrating and damaging Jordanian flags displayed on a bridge in the capital, Amman.
A spokesperson for the Public Security Directorate confirmed that legal action will be taken against the minors.
What penalties could they face?
The incident has sparked public debate about the legal consequences for the youths involved.
According to legal expert Dr. Ashraf Al-Ra'i, Article 26 (d) of the Juvenile Law states that if a juvenile commits a misdemeanor, the court may impose any of the non-custodial measures listed in Article 24 of the law. These include:
Reprimand or verbal warning
Official caution
Handing the juvenile over to a guardian or caregiver
Supervision by a trusted individual or family
Supervision by a probation officer (6 months to 3 years)
Enrollment in a rehabilitation or training program (6 months to 3 years)
Community service (40 to 100 hours)
Additionally, under Article 12 (a) of the Jordanian Flag Law, anyone who intentionally insults or damages the flag is subject to a prison sentence of six months to two years and a fine ranging from JD1,000 to JD3,000.
Security forces: No tolerance for such acts
The Public Security Directorate stated that a specialized investigative team reviewed a video that circulated online showing three minors damaging flags on a bridge.
Investigations identified the individuals: two appeared in the video, while the third was collecting the discarded flags below the bridge, allegedly to sell them. All three were arrested and will face legal consequences.
Authorities stressed that there will be zero tolerance for such offensive acts against national symbols and that the strictest measures will be taken against anyone attempting to disrespect or harm them.
