10-year-old girl, two others drown in Ganga
Kanpur: Three people, including a 10-year-old girl, lost their lives by drowning in the Ganga in the Bilhaur police station area of Kanpur on Thursday. The police, assisted by divers, retrieved the bodies after receiving information.
The deceased were identified as Balram Nishad (22), son of Chanda Nishad from Shivli police station, Kanpur Dehat, his brother-in-law Sandeep Nishad (20), son of Ramvilas from Bidhnu police station, Kanpur Nagar, and his niece Priyanka (10), daughter of Sarvesh Nishad from Kallupurwa Sen Paschim Para, Kanpur Nagar.
According to reports, Balram was visiting his sister's residence in Kallu Ka Purwa Sen Paschim Para, Bilhaur, on Wednesday with his wife and brother-in-law Sandeep.
They were there to attend Priyanka's 'mundan' ceremony. On Thursday, while Balram's brother-in-law Sarvesh was at the market purchasing medicine for his wife, the family members went to take a bath in the Ganga during Jyestha Dussehra.
The situation turned fatal when Priyanka went into deep waters and started drowning. Balram attempted to rescue her but found himself in difficulty. Sandeep, upon seeing both in distress, jumped in to help but also drowned.
Nearby bathers attempted to rescue them and alerted the police. The three were pulled out and rushed to the nearby CHC, but doctors pronounced them dead.
ACP Bilhaur, Amarnath Yadav confirmed the drowning deaths at Kallu Purwa Akbarpur Sendh Ghat. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, and legal procedures are in progress. The police said that Balram had got married in Feb. The incident has raised concerns about safety measures at the ghats, particularly during religious festivals when large crowds gather for ritual bathing.
Local authorities have announced plans to increase safety arrangements, including the deployment of additional lifeguards and installation of warning signs about deep water zones. The police have initiated a detailed investigation into the incident. They are recording statements from witnesses and family members present at the scene. The local administration has said it will provide all possible assistance to the bereaved families.
