Anna University sexual assault case: Annamalai warns of revealing identities of police officers allegedly contacted by convict

BJP Tamil Nadu former president K. Annamalai, on Tuesday (June 3, 2025) alleged several questions remain unanswered in the Anna University sexual assault case and accused the DMK government of attempting to 'shield' certain individuals. In a video posted on his X handle, Mr. Annamalai raised several questions to the State government and claimed the convict Gnanasekar spoke to a police officer and a DMK functionary after committing the crime, last year. He claimed to have accessed the Call Detail Records (CDR) of the accused and the DMK functionary. Further, he warned that he would reveal the identity of the police officers, whom the accused and the DMK functionary had allegedly contacted, if the State government failed to respond to his questions within 48 hours. He made these allegations a day after the Mahila Court in Chennai sentenced the accused to undergo life imprisonment for a minimum period of 30 years without remission.

Annamalai hails BrahMos impact, says many countries showing interest

Senior BJP leader K. Annamalai on Sunday underscored India's rising global stature in defence manufacturing and praised the country's civilizational values as its most enduring strength. Speaking at a public forum here, Annamalai pointed to the increasing global interest in India's defence technologies, particularly the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. 'Every single day -- of course, you all know -- the greatest spokesperson for the BrahMos missile is the Prime Minister of Pakistan. He has practically become our ambassador,' Annamalai said, drawing applause from the audience. He referred to a recent statement of Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Shariff in Azerbaijan, and said, 'They were reportedly planning an attack after their prayers -- something similar to what JD Vance had referenced. But India acted one or two hours ahead of time, and the BrahMos strike significantly damaged their credibility. After Operation Sindoor, reports suggest that 16 countries have expressed interest in procuring BrahMos missiles for their defence forces.' The BJP leader lauded the Modi government's push for self-reliance in defence, citing record-breaking production figures. 'For a long time, we were enamoured by Western countries, believing their military technologies were far superior. As a result, Indian defence firms were overlooked. But under Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, the defence sector has been opened like never before. In the financial year 2024-25, India's defence production has touched Rs 1.46 lakh crore,' he said. Shifting from defence to deeper civilizational themes, Annamalai reflected on India's spiritual geography. 'In our tradition, we link the human being to the cosmos. Our civilizational strength is rooted in the fact that no single sacred site claims exclusivity. That is why we have 51 Shakti Peethas and 12 Jyotirlingas across the land. Every region is sacred, every place is unique,' he said. Concluding his remarks, Annamalai added, 'This civilizational unity-- woven through our culture and spirituality -- is India's greatest strength, even more so than our borders guarded by drones, armies, and powerful weapons.'

Indian Chamber organises job fair in Coimbatore under Naan Mudhalvan Scheme

Almost 100 companies from Coimbatore and its environs are recruiting candidates at a two-day job fair that started on Thursday at the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI). K. Annamalai, vice president of the Chamber, and Rajesh B. Lund, president of the Chamber, told The Hindu that the second edition of the job fair organised by the ICCI, Coimbatore, will see close to 3,600 candidates attending interviews of nearly a 100 companies under the Tamil Nadu government's Naan Mudhalvan scheme. The fair, organised in partnership with NSE Academy, is for students in the arts, commerce, and management streams. The government provides 60 hours training for college students under the Naan Mudhalvan scheme. The companies that are recruiting candidates include e-commerce giants such as Flipkart, local companies in logistics, finance management firms, and retailers. 'The number of vacancies that will be filled totally will be known on Friday. Last year, the Chamber organised a similar job fair in which 30 companies offered letters of employment to 242 candidates. They were selected from 700 students who participated in the fair,' said Mr. Annamalai. The event got bigger this year with participation of 100 companies, said Mr. Lund. Each candidate who registers can select the company for the interview. 'Though there is no restriction on the number of companies, a candidate will have time to attend the interview of only one company,' said Mr. Annamalai. Trade sources pointed out that currently, attrition rates were high. If a company recruits 10 candidates, especially those who passed out of colleges in the recent months, just one or two candidates remain at the company for a year. This should be addressed in any training programme for students, they added.

President Murmu's reference to Supreme Court falls within her Constitutional rights: Annamalai

BJP leader and former president of the party's Tamil Nadu unit K. Annamalai on Friday (May 16, 2025) said that President Droupadi Murmu's reference to the Supreme Court, seeking its opinion on the assent of Bills passed by State legislatures, are within her rights enshrined in the Constitution. Interacting with mediapersons in Tiruvannamalai, Mr. Annamalai said that under Article 143 (1) of the Constitution, the President can clear her doubts with the Supreme Court on its rulings. The reference made by the President to the Supreme Court is the 15th such reference made by Presidents to the highest court of the country since 1950 when the Constitution came into existence. 'Apart from Governors, the Supreme Court, in its ruling, said that the President too should fix deadlines to give assent to Bills passed by State legislatures. This has made President Ms. Murmu seek clarity on the issue,' he said. Further elaborating on the issue, Mr. Annamalai said that the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) had directed Karnataka to release 205 tmc of water to Tamil Nadu in 1991. It was opposed by the then Karnataka Chief Minister Sarekoppa Bangarappa, who brought a resolution against it, and it was passed by the State Assembly then. 'When the then President R. Venkataraman sought the Supreme Court's opinion on it, the court ruled in favour of Tamil Nadu to release its share of water. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin should understand these realities and take a balanced view,' he said. When asked whether ADMK Workers' Rights Retrieval Committee coordinator O. Panneerselvam is still in National Democratic Allaince (NDA), Mr. Annamalai said that the BJP has not left any political party out of the alliance in Tamil Nadu. 'OPS is always with us [NDA]. No political party has left the alliance. The previous visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Tamil Nadu was for a different purpose,' he quipped, when asked about Mr. Panneerselvam being denied an invitation during Mr. Shah's visit to the State.

Annamalai demands CBI probe into four double-murder cases in Kongu region

Former BJP State president K. Annamalai on Monday urged the State government to transfer all four double-murder cases in the Kongu region to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), citing the agency's expertise in handling complex cases for over three decades. He also issued an ultimatum to the police to apprehend the accused in the couple's murder case in Erode district within two weeks, failing which he threatened to launch an indefinite hunger strike in Sivagiri starting May 20. A demonstration was held in Sivagiri to condemn the brutal murder of Ramasamy (75) and Bhakiyammal (65) of Vilankattuvalasu, near Sivagiri, on May 1. Speaking at the protest, Mr. Annamalai said the heinous killing of the elderly couple was not an isolated incident, and added that double murders had previously occurred in Kuppuchipalayam (Paramathi Velur), Murungatholuvu (Chennimalai), and Semalaigoundanpalayam (Tiruppur). 'The police have failed to apprehend the accused in all four cases. Double murders are occurring once in every six months. The Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin, should hand over these cases to the CBI, which has the technical expertise and surveillance capabilities to crack them,' he said. Mr. Annamalai alleged that the State government had, in 2023, withdrawn the general consent given to the CBI to investigate cases in Tamil Nadu without prior permission, primarily to shield the then DMK Minister V. Senthil Balaji. 'Now, the State must reinstate that consent and allow the CBI to take over these four cases,' he added. Claiming that law and order had completely deteriorated in Tamil Nadu, he said the public could no longer tolerate the prevailing situation. 'Despite this, the Chief Minister is being felicitated every day. Are these celebrations for the rising crime rate, crimes against women, or for TASMAC liquor sales crossing ₹50,000 crore?' he asked. He also pointed out that two ministers were removed from their posts on the same day—something unprecedented in the country. Furthermore, he stated that 13 DMK ministers are facing asset-related cases, describing the government's administration as a 'total failure.' Taking a further dig at Mr. Stalin, Mr. Annamalai said that while other Chief Ministers had begun implementing the Centre's directive to identify and expel Pakistani nationals, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister was yet to take any action. 'Do you support militancy?' he asked pointedly. AIADMK protest Meanwhile, the AIADMK staged a demonstration at the Vilakethi Four Road Junction on Monday. The protest, led by former minister K.V. Ramalingam, saw the participation of former minister K.S. Thennarasu, former MP S. Selvakumara Chinnayan, and other party functionaries. The cadre raised slogans against the ruling DMK government, accusing it of failing to prevent rising crimes in the State, and described the double murder as barbaric. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Ramalingam alleged that the DMK government was focused solely on publicity and called it the worst government in the country. He claimed that murders and robberies were occurring daily across the State, while the ruling party was misleading the public with false promises. 'Electricity tariff and prices of essential commodities have skyrocketed under DMK rule. All welfare schemes implemented during the previous AIADMK regime have been discontinued,' he alleged.
