Abandon mini harbour-cum-port project in Puducherry: Water users and farmers' collective urges govt.

The Bangaaru Vaickal Neeraadhara Koottamaippu, a water users and farmers' collective, has urged the Puducherry government to drop the move to revive the mini harbour-cum-port project at Moorthikuppam-Pudukuppam in the Union Territory (UT). In a letter addressed to Lt. Governor K. Kailashnathan, the president of the association V. Chandrasekhar said the Puducherry government had entered into an agreement with IIT, Madras, to a conduct a feasibility study for the creation of a fishing harbour at Moorthikuppam-Pudukuppam in Bahour commune at a cost of ₹93.22 lakh. 'We are completely at a loss to understand why the government is spending huge amounts for a project feasibility study, when already two such proposals — one by the Ministry of Environment and Forests and the second by the World Bank — have been rejected. The project is completely unviable and would result in severe environmental damage to the entire coast of Puducherry, including the artisanal fishermen in the area,' Mr. Chandrasekhar said. The proposed project is in complete violation of Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules and will result in irreversible destruction of agricultural lands upstream of the Mullodai channel. No Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) had been carried out so far, and the government should not go ahead with the project, he said. 'Disastrous' According to the collective, the project would turn out to be disastrous. If the fishing harbour is built at the southern tip of Puducherry's coast, then the entire stretch of the remaining coastline would be completely eroded, destroying the livelihoods of fishermen living to the north of the proposed harbour. It will completely wipe out all tourism-related development, including the Blue Flag beach at Puducherry and the archaeological site of Arikamedu. Stating that there was no natural connection between the Mullodai lagoon and the sea, Mr. Chandrasekhar said that cutting open the lagoon to the coast would be a disastrous move. The naturally occurring sand dunes in Nallavadu, Panithittu, Narambai, and Manapet coastal villages will be destroyed, resulting in sea water intrusion into the deep aquifers and thus reaching upstream upto Bahour. The collective demanded that the government abandon the project with immediate effect. The government should also seek an explanation from the Public Works Department and concerned authorities for 'hiding' the facts related to the project, it said.

LG asks officials to expedite modalities on tourism project in Manapet

Lt. Governor Governor K. Kailashnathan has instructed officials to work toward speedy implementation of all the modalities connected with the Rs. 500 crore multi-product tourism project proposed in Manapet. The Lt Governor, who visited Palmyra Beach in the Manapet- Moorthikuppam- Pudukuppam belt, reviewed the plan and urged all concerned to expedite the ground work on the project, given its potential to give an impetus to the already growing tourism sector and to further develop Puducherry as a sought-after tourist destination, a press note from the Raj Nivas said. A draft project report to develop the 100-acre site into a Special Tourism Zone (STZ) on a Public Private Partnership basis, has been submitted to the Union Government for clearance. The draft report for the STZ has pitched for a host of facilities, including an upmarket hotel, with a 200-room capacity, a conference hall, amusement park, and parking lot, the Raj Nivas said. The government plans to offer a diversified tourism experience in the seaside site such as MICE (meetings, incentives, conferencing and exhibitions) events, leisure and adventure sports. According to the press note, it was highlighted during the discussions that once the STZ project goes on stream, the government could expect to garner an annual revenue of about Rs. 40-50 crore. Besides, the area would also benefit from economic development and job opportunities for about 1,000 persons. The representatives of the consultancy firm tasked with formulating the detailed project report, briefed the Lt Governor. D. Manikandan, Secretary to the Lt. Governor and Tourism Secretary, K. Muralidharan, Tourism Director and Revenue Department officials were present for the review.

L-G directs police officials to take strict action against antisocial elements and curb sale of ganja in the Union Territory

At a meeting to review the law and order situation in Puducherry, Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan has directed senior police officers to take effective steps to curb the activities of antisocial elements and the sale of ganja. The meeting attended by Chief Secretary Sharat Chauhan and Director General of Police Shalini Singh at Raj Nivas, discussed in length measures to be adopted to strengthen law enforcement, improve traffic situation and on implementation of three new criminal laws, sources said. While appreciating the police for launching the Makkal Mandram, a grievance redressal forum, at police stations on Saturdays in the Union Territory, the Lt. Governor said more steps should be taken to curb the activities of antisocial elements and sale of drugs. 'I am getting positive feedback on Makkal Mandram. Since we are a tourist destination and have a lot of higher educational institutions, more measures should be put in place to crack down on drug peddlers. The activities of rowdy elements should be dealt with an iron hand,' he said at the meeting. He asked the police and jail authorities to monitor hard-core criminals lodged at Kalapet prison. He even suggested shifting some of the hard-core criminals to prisons outside the Union Territory, said an officer. The meeting assumed significance as the Opposition in the recent days had made critical remarks against the AINRC- BJP government for its handling of the law and order in the region, especially after the murder of a former functionary of Yuva Morcha, the BJP's youth wing. Others who attended the meeting included, Secretary to the Lt. Governor D. Manikandan, Inspector General of Police Ajit Kumar Singla, Deputy Inspector General of Police R. Sathiyasundaram, Law Secretary S. Sathiyamurthy, Senior Superintendent of Police, Law and Order R. Kalaivanan.
