Over 30% of the trees lining the elevated corridor stretches marked for felling

A large number of trees are set to be felled and translocated for the six-lane elevated corridors on the National Highway 44 between Paradise Junction and Dairy Farm Road and on the State Highway 1, between Paradise Junction and ORR near Shamirpet, to be built by Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority. Felling permission has been given by the Tree Protection Committee under the Forest department for a total 3,298 trees, HMDA Director, Urban Forestry, K. Srinivas informed. These constitute more than 30% of the total number of trees on both the stretches, estimated by the Tree Protection Committee to be 10,593. Translocation has been advised for 4,230 trees and 3,095 trees are to be retained. Two locations have been identified for translocation of the identified trees — Nehru Zoological Park and the Telangana Sports School at Hakimpet. Majority of the trees, 9,100 belonging to 90 different species, have been enumerated on the Shamirpet stretch and the Dairy Farm stretch housed 1,493 trees. While the Shamirpet stretch is predominantly lined by Subabul (2,244), Gulmohar (1184) and Eucalyptus (333), a sizeable number were also species such as Neem (675), Pongamia (321), and Ashoka (321). Peltrophorum, Sissoo and others too were in good numbers. 'Tree Protection Committee members inspected all the trees, taken note of the height, girth and the status of the tree, before deciding which tree to retain and which to fell,' the official informed.

Two Telugu veterans on 34-foot sailboat chart course from Kiwi coast to Visakhapatnam

Two retired Telugu officers — Colonel K. Srinivas, formerly of the EME, and Captain CDNV Prasad (Indian Navy) — set sail from Opua Bay, New Zealand, on May 14, marking the first leg of their journey to India aboard their 34-foot sailboat, TYSTIE. Both officers belong to the 63rd course of the National Defence Academy (NDA), having joined in 1980. Their sailboat is currently registered in Poland but is expected to switch to Indian registration upon arrival in Visakhapatnam later this year. At that point, the vessel may be renamed VISHAKHA in tribute to the port city. Incidentally, both men are alumni of the prestigious Sainik School, Korukonda (1971 entry batch), which has been a steady feeder institution for the NDA and other defence academies over the last six decades. Among the school's notable alumni is the late Colonel Santosh Babu, MVC (posthumous), who was martyred in the Galwan Valley clash. If weather and wind conditions remain favourable, the duo are expected to reach their next destination — Savusavu in Fiji — within 12 to 13 days, accounting for potential zigzag routes due to navigation needs. Their planned maritime route includes port calls at Savusavu (Fiji), Port Vila (Vanuatu), the Solomon Islands, Kupang and Bali (Indonesia), Penang and Langkawi (Malaysia), Phuket (Thailand) and Sri Vijaya Puram. A press release stated that this expedition highlights the untapped potential of Andhra Pradesh's long coastline, dotted with ports, beaches and fishing villages, for promoting marine tourism and harnessing the broader blue economy. It also makes a strong case for developing modern berthing and marina facilities in Visakhapatnam in the near future.

Two veterans from Andhra Pradesh set sail to Vizag from New Zealand

Two veterans and senior citizens from Andhra Pradesh— Colonel K. Srinivas and Captain C.D.N.V. Prasad — have embarked on a trans-oceanic sailing attempt from New Zealand to India (Visakhapatnam) via countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. They had started the first leg of their journey from Opua Bay (New Zealand) to Savusavu (Fiji) on May 14 in a 34-foot-long boat called 'Tystie'. Depending on the weather conditions and winds, they are expected to reach Savusavu in the next 12 to 13 days, subject to some dog-legged sailing. Sea route Their passage route includes port of call at Savusavu (Fiji), Port Vila (Vanuatu), Solomon Islands, Kupang (Indonesia), Bali (Indonesia), Penang (Malaysia), Langkawi (Malaysia), Phuket (Thailand), and Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair). They are likely to meet several Telugu expatriates, or people of Indian origin, at various ports. Both are from the 63rd course of the National Defence Academy in 1980 and are alumni of Sainik School in Korukonda, near here (1971 batch). Their boat is currently registered in Poland, but will be converted to Indian registration and will be renamed 'Visakha' (in honour of the Visakhapatnam Port) upon reaching Visakhapatnam later this year. 'This is a remarkable trans-oceanic sailing effort undertaken by two senior Indian citizens. Their example will inspire many young and old to take to the seas,' a PIB spokesperson said on Saturday (May 17). The long Andhra coast, dotted with small and big ports, beaches and coastal villages, had great potential for maritime tourism, and the entire spectrum of the blue economy, a defence official said.

Retired police officer launches collection of short stories

The launch of 'A', a collection of short stories by retired police officer and author Chilukuri Rama Umamaheshwara Sarma, was held on Sunday at the Jubilee Hills International Centre. The event saw the presence of senior journalist K. Srinivas, Sahitya Akademi Award-winning children's writer Pattipaka Mohan, authors Mohammed Khadeer Babu and Unudurthi Sudhakar, as well as writers Manasa Edluri and Sujata Elpuri. Speaking at the launch, the guests praised the diversity, realism, humanistic perspective, engaging narrative style, and subtle humour woven throughout the work. The speakers further pointed out that each story adopts a different style of narration, resisting any formulaic pattern, and offering sharp insights into human nature and hidden motives with apparent ease. 'A' is Sarma's second book following his retirement, after a policing career spanning over three and a half decades. His first work, 'Nenu Shaanta Kuda – O Jeevana Katha', was well received.
