MIRI (May 24): The Karnival Sukan Media Sarawak (KASUMeS) 2025 for the northern zone officially kicked off today in conjunction with the state-level Hari Wartawan Nasional (HAWANA) celebrations, bringing together media professionals for a day of sports, camaraderie, and recognition. Organised by the Unit Komunikasi Awam Sarawak (Ukas), the carnival is part of the broader HAWANA 2025 celebrations and aims to honour the contributions of media practitioners while promoting physical wellbeing and team spirit. Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin officiated the event, acknowledging the growing challenges faced by journalists in the digital age. While highlighting the potential benefits of artificial intelligence, he also cautioned against its misuse, urging media practitioners to remain vigilant and ethical in their work. 'Health is just as important. Reporters must take the necessary steps to ensure their body and mind are in the best shape to carry out their job,' he added, noting that programmes such as KASUMeS promote physical wellbeing and camaraderie among media professionals. In his welcoming remarks, Ukas director Awang Putrayusrie Awang Redzuan reaffirmed Ukas' commitment to providing the media with timely, accurate, and transparent access to government initiatives and policies. He also highlighted that activities such as KASUMeS help strengthen inter-agency collaboration and build stronger ties among media personnel. 'This carnival marks a new chapter in journalism where sports and teamwork are celebrated alongside professionalism and public service,' he said. Today's programme featured highlights including the KASUMeS 2025 convoy, pickleball, and dart competitions, open to all media representatives from the northern zone. KASUMeS is set to become an annual event aimed at reinforcing media-government relations while celebrating the vital role journalists play in delivering accurate and trustworthy information to the public.
