Slow down and use caution if you have to travel! Behind the snow, temperatures plummet, with highs in the single digits both above and below zero through the second half of the weekend and through much of next week. Overnight lows drop into the teens and low 20's below zero with wind chills likely falling into the 30's and 40's below for several nights. In addition, daytime wind chills likely to stay sub-zero, as low as -15 to -25°. Temperatures at these levels would lead to frostbite in less than 10-15 minutes, so it's going to be important to limit your time outside, dress in layers, and cover as much skin as you can to protect yourself from the cold and frostbite. Rock Valley principal named Iowa High School Principal of the Year You'll need to protect pets and farm animals from the bitter cold as well by keeping them inside and out of the cold as much as possible. If possible, you may want to consider coats, boots, and hats for your pets as well. Also make sure to open up sink cabinets to let warmer air in to prevent pipes from freezing and/or bursting. It may be a good idea to let your faucets drip as well. For more tips on staying safe in extreme cold, visit the National Weather Service's Cold Weather Safety Page.
