Jed the Fish, legendary KROQ DJ who shaped alt-rock radio, dies at 69
Jed 'The Fish' Gould, the influential DJ who helped shape the sound of alternative rock radio in Los Angeles, has died at age 69 following a recent lung cancer diagnosis. Gould passed away early Monday morning, leaving behind a legacy that defined nearly four decades of KROQ-FM. Gould joined KROQ in 1978 when the station was still an upstart in Pasadena. Known for breaking punk, new wave, and alternative bands long before they hit the mainstream, he served as a key on-air personality for 34 years. He left KROQ in 2012 after becoming a fixture as its afternoon host. 'Jed the Fish was one of the kindest, funniest, and most unique people I've ever met,' said current KROQ DJ Megan Holiday. 'He was endlessly creative and could light up an arena with his energy.' In addition to his time at KROQ, Gould also hosted shifts at KCSN and briefly returned to KROQ via its HD-2 station Roq of the '80s. He received multiple industry accolades, including Billboard's Modern Rock Personality of the Year and Radio & Records' Local Modern Rock Personality of the Year. Known for his distinctive, layered laugh and offbeat humor, Gould once reflected, 'It took me years of imitation before I learned the simplicity of being myself on air.' Born Edwin Jed Fish Gould III in 1955, he also explored visual art in recent years, working in sculpture and mixed media. His passing marks the loss of a true pioneer in alternative radio, whose voice helped define a generation of Southern California music fans.

Former MTV VJ Matt Pinfield ‘incapacitated' after stroke
NEW YORK — Former MTV VJ and New Jersey native Matt Pinfield has been 'incapacitated' after suffering a stroke, his family said. Pinfield, 63, had the incident in Los Angeles on Jan. 6 and is incapable of moving or making cognitive decisions, according to court documents obtained by the Asbury Park Press. His daughters, Jessica and Maya Pinfield, are petitioning the court for a temporary conservatorship and asking that the court not give his girlfriend Kara Brown any decision-making power. Los Angeles radio station KCSN said earlier this month that Pinfield was taking a leave of absence for health reasons. Pinfield began DJing out of his family home in East Brunswick and on college radio at Rutgers. He gained a following spinning records at the Melody Bar in New Brunswick in the 1980s and '90s. At the same time, he was the program director of Eatontown's WHTG-FM, which became a renowned alternative rock station. Between 1995 and 1999, he hosted '120 Minutes' — another alternative rock launching pad — and other programs on MTV. From 2001 to 2006, he was the vice president of A&R and artist development for Columbia Records. He's since been a radio personality in a number of cities, an occasional TV host and has made frequent appearances as a talking head in documentaries. 'I found my calling by the time I was in kindergarten,' he wrote in his autobiography 'All These Things That I've Done: My Insane, Improbable Rock Life.' 'All I wanted to do was listen to records and get other people as excited about them as I was.'

Former MTV Host Matt Pinfield Recently Suffered Massive Stroke
The post Former MTV Host Matt Pinfield Recently Suffered Massive Stroke appeared first on Consequence. Matt Pinfield, best known as the former host of MTV's 120 Minutes, suffered a massive stroke on January 6th, according to legal documents filed by his daughter Jessica, per TMZ. News that Pinfield experienced a medical event first surfaced a few weeks ago after Los Angeles radio station KCSN told listeners, 'The SoCal Sound's legendary DJ Matt Pinfield will be taking a temporary leave of absence. We are fully supportive of Matt and hope to have his energetic knowledge of rock n' roll back on the air soon.' In addition to his gig on KCSN, the 63-year-old Pinfield hosts a Sunday night show on LA's KLOS radio station and is also a co-host of the AXS TV show The Power Hour. He was the host of MTV's influential alt-rock show 120 Minutes from 1995 through 1999, and again on MTV2's revival of the program from 2011 to 2013. As TMZ reports, Pinfield's daughter Jessica filed for a temporary conservatorship over her father, requesting that she handle his health and financial concerns. In the paperwork, she claims that Pinfield is currently incompetent to make any such decisions regarding those aspects of his life, and that she's worried that Pinfield's girlfriend will withdraw money from his bank accounts. Back in 2018, Pinfield was hospitalized after being hit by a car while he was crossing the street, suffering a broken leg and multiple lacerations. In an Instagram post on January 6th, likely just before he suffered the stroke, Pinfield shared a photo of himself in front of a video camera, writing, 'Starting another week with gratitude for a life surrounded by great people, life changing music, and unforgettable experiences that I never take for granted. Here to another week-another day-open heart and open mind. Let's rock!' A photo from the night before apparently shows Pinfield in attendance at Marilyn Manson's birthday party, which was also attended by Billy Corgan, Richard Patrick, Ronnie Radke, and others. Several musicians and peers have sent well wishes to Pinfield, who is known for his encyclopedic musical knowledge and for helping to break a number of bands throughout his career. Singer-songwriter and Marvelous 3 frontman Butch Walker posted a photo of Pinfield on Instagram, writing, 'Matt is a legend in the music business, he can school ANYONE in rock n roll trivia, and he is a helluva wonderful human. Matt suffered a severe stroke recently and has been in the hospital for weeks now. I'm not asking you for anything. I'm just asking you to keep him in your thoughts.' Our thoughts go out to Matt Pinfield during this difficult time, with hopes that he experiences a full recovery.
